wow, initially its somewhat clean, there is a little fuzz between snares, and on the 32nd note rips...not so good. the timbre of snares and tenors are great...even for a reg vid. the tilted snares are a bit stupid...its passe and I have never been convinced by the boys from SCV about that silly gimmick. nice job seattle.
If you are playing traditional grip though, you technically should be using a tilted snare. It's not necessarily gimmick, but a case of being aesthetically and even more importantly mechanically pleasing.
That is highly debatable, as playing style and fundamentals of actual posture have changed, along with actual approach, using higher torque surfaces. Btw, asthetics are visual.
I am aware that aesthetics are visual, which is why I stated '...but a case of being aesthetically(visually) and even more importantly mechanically pleasing.'
And I'm not trying to be a prick right now when I ask what you mean by using 'higher torque surfaces'. Do you mean using a moeller technique? Because I have always been told, read and seen that using traditional grip on a tilted snare with moeller will create a more relaxed and full stroke.
no, im specifically talking about marching percussion: high torque playing surfaces. There are no classical grips like Möller used in the contemporary marching theatre and method. Tom Float had more to do with current technique than the classical chamber percussionist.
uh, I mentioned Float...why not? as Float is perhaps the most influencial person to marching percussion, technique, composition, drumming/quality of sound approach and dynamic percussion ensemble balance.
yeah people argue all day out that shit... its all about the teqnique u use... although tilted drums help with left handed rim shots, if you have a loose technique, your sticks will fly out of your hands with tilted drums
Once you know hot to hold the sticks right its easy to start building the new muscle up. These guys have perfected their traditional grip with lots of practice.

how about this, with a tilted drum you cannot back stick properly.
wheelholder12 3 years ago
who cares?
cru4you 3 years ago
you are right but its also harder to play matched grip.
wheelholder12 3 years ago
that is totally an individual opinion....
one i would find most people disagree with actually
cru4you 3 years ago
I did not express myself fully. I meant to say that it was harder to play matched grip on a tilted drum.
wheelholder12 3 years ago
right that is why you'll never see it for an extended phrase on a tilted drum
cru4you 3 years ago
bt at the same time its old tradision and they are tearing up those paradiddles like they are single stroke so yea i think they are fine :)

I'm not really sure where Tom Float and classical percussion was brought up.

hint: read below.

There is no mention of Tom Float or classical percussion anywhere. Thom Hannum, yes. Tom Float, no.
