  • that's not all guys... there's a long road ahead. It's just one victory. A best lap by a sedan with original tires. It's good, but it's a little part of all te context. Porsche have magnetic suspensio to hold the engine too, and at all, european cars have smaller engines, more efficient.

    In other words, the GM won 1 fight, but still far away on the war. Efficient cars atill a dream for americans.

  • MRC, magnetic ride control was deleoped in Michigan by a company called Delphi. Both Delphi, and GM engineers develpoed the tech together. Sorry Europe, we have better handling cars now.

    and this isn't the best lap time the car could. they stopped testing it once it broke the record, which occurred on one of the first laps.

    i'm sure you could get it down to 7:50 with some practice and talent.

  • actually, the automatic for this car does better times than you could do with a manual. It shifts faster and at optimum shift points. they have a video review of the Automatic doing faster times than the manual

  • idk, cuz i saw a video in which the engineer said the manual probably would have been faster, but he'd gotten used to the automatic around the nurburgring, so he didn't bother with the manual when he broke the record.

    for such a driver's car like this, though, you'd want the manual even if it is .0001 slower.

  • Probably not, although power is not everything. American cars have too much power wasted. Big engines in crappy cars, it's the american way. Technology is "stone age".

    I would prefer the next Insignia OPC without any doubt. And at the end I would have enough fuel to do another quick lap.

    Hey, in Europe we have anti lock brakes standard in every single car since 15 years ago. How about USA? Yeah, I know, it's "optional" even for 2009 cars! LOLOL! Now, that's funny! XD

  • lol you Europeans, really dont have any idea what ur talking about when it comes to these newer model american cars, do u? too much power wasted?? ZR1 638hp, 1.02 G on skidpad, fastest Nurburgring time recorded from a production car, and its wasted?? come on man, be real, ABS is standard in just about every US car except for little Aveos and Toyota Echo's and stuff. And actually GM is part owner of Opel and if u didnt know, it uses GM's new 3.6liter V6 as its top engine. Now that's funny LMAO!!!

  • There is only one thing GM does right: sending the money to Opel in Germany. They can take care of the cars evolution themselves. Hey, you know, Chevrolet is trying to sell some cheap cars here and even those have ABS and other mandatory requirements.

    But what's funny is that Opel and Ford Europe are two of the most modern and top selling cars in Europe. And still, US has those crappy cars there... ugly as hell, gearboxes suck, interiors suck, efficiency suck... but hey, 400hp V8? Yeah! LOOL!

  • efficiency sucks, huh? ALL GM V8's including the ZR1 make 24 mpg on the highway, as well as the eco-tec 4 cylinders get 34mpg on the highway. my wife has the 06 impala lt with the 3.5liter V6, 215hp, and it gets 20mpg in the city and 30mpg highway. Id say that's efficiency lol. and the manual gearboxes are actually better than some Euro models like the Audi A4. I admit tho...interiors have been trash up till now...but if u take a close look at this CTS-V, u'll see that that's getting better too.

  • I could argue about the "mpg" values, but... the gearboxes? Oh please... Audi has the best engines and gearboxes of the market. Period. Have you ever heard of LeMans 24h race? That's where all comes from. Improved and developed.

    The only ones we can even compare are the BMW ones. In supercar range: Ferrari, Porsche,... also the recent Nissan GTR...

    There is no doubt US cars are worse than anything from Europe and Asia. Even some of those new Chinese cars are oddly starting to look interesting.

  • you would be very very surprised about how good the C6's manual gearboxes are, especially the ZR1. And i should know the mpg values, i work at a Chevrolet Dealership and see em all day. Now i could definately argue about the engines, but there is no point, since different companies have different views of how a engine should be built. GM goes for high horsepower and high displacement, whereas Audi is for low displacement and moderate power, so u cant really compare the two.

  • You'd be surprised but GM had many of their new engines developped in Europe, just like Ford had its ecoboost engines develloped in Germany.

    GM was lucky to buy Opel and not so long time ago the Saab. These companies saved GM from making utter, utter crap. The new Cadillacs prove my point.

  • Yea, ur right about the engine development in Germany to a point. The Eco-Tec engines in the cobalts where also developed there, but the LS9 V8's in the CTS-V and ZR1 are still basically LSX blocks with different heads, cam, bores, and a supercharger. They may have been tuned in Europe as well.

    But I don't see what the problem is tho. GM would probably still make bad cars without taking ideas from other companies that worked. But If you own the companies and they help to build cars like this??

  • It actually works inside out. Opel sends all their profits to USA, which means they don't pay taxes in Germany and that's why German government hate them.

  • All manufacturer's Nurburgring lap times are fake. Anyway Look at the Maserati MC12 or Ferrari Enzo. Mind you they were tested by independent magazines

  • who says that they are fake...you?? lol and even if they where, there aren't many cars out there that can even come close to its numbers. Like it or not, the ZR1 has set a very high performance bar and no one can seem to figure out why b/c everyone is too stuck on GM's past. but the past is just that, the past. Things have changed alot in GM's engineering of cars including a much higher reliability, dependability, performance, and as u can see in this '09 CTS-V, interior styling as well.

    And I wouldn't rely on surveys either as we live in world of corruption. GM's cars are still far from high reliability.

    ZR1 wasn't tested by any magazine yet, but look at the Nissan GTR.

    Driver's republic time - 7:55 - wet

    Lamborghini Gallardo lp560 - which is by any means faster than Nissan GTR was tested by Sport Auto and it did it in 7:52.

  • who said i was relying on surveys?? i drive nothing but GM cars and none of them have less than 70,000 miles on them. i have a '06 Impala SS with 103,000miles, a 07 Cobalt SS with 70,500 miles, and a 06'Z06 with 80,000miles, all used when purchased, and i have never had a problem with either one of them and i have had the Z06 and the impala for close to 3 years now, i just bought the cobalt about a year ago. but not one single problem from any of them, so id say the reliability is pretty high.

  • And ZR1 is basically a Ferrari's technology made cheaply using mass production methods packed up in a plastic body.

  • oh really? personally, i've never known ferrari to use forced induction, nor have they ever used a high displacement V8 that has a higher output than their V10s. Your trying to take way too much credit from the GM engineers. the MR suspension is solely the technology of GM, as well as the powertrain. The LS9 is essencially the same LS block from the LS7, but lighter, with different heads and an added roots type supercharger running at around 12psi. and the body is not plastic, its carbon fiber.

  • one other main difference. ferraris need a tow truck to finish lemans. look who crosses the finish line first to see who the winner is. one word: SCOREBOARD

  • that's actually not too, look it up, the magnetic suspension developed for both these cars was made by an american company in michigan.... so in other words, nobody copied anybody, but it is american technology.

  • yes they were made by companies in the usa but i think the idea to use them came from farrari i think, not too sure im a bit rusty on the manufactuerers and ideas they recieved them by.

  • ferrari didn't call up an american company and demanded magnetic suspension to be invented, they developed it, and tried to sell it to companies. gm, ferrari, and audi bought it.

  • no ur not getting how i said it. yeah american companies used them after farrai has used them. thats where the idea of magnetic suspension came from. Italy than U.S. decided to use them and then brought it to michigan to used on american sports cars.

  • actually, i think i was wrong. if you look on jay leno's review of the corvette zr1, he claims that gm invented it and ferrari copied it. i'm guessing you're european, and i know that you hate it whenever we invent something that's better than a european technology.

    but in this case, whether gm invented it or not, it was invented in america, so live with it.

  • actually im american and i was just going by when gm said they decided to use for there c5 Z06 edition, i know it wasnt invented in the states. from what i read about it they used the same technology that was in the farraris suspension. but yeah i read jay lenos deal. but lets just shut up, arguing about something pety. Us guys and our car addictions. we'll argue the simplest of things.
