I go to FIU. I'm so embarrassed that these kids were actually protesting. They think because they've done a few years of college they deserve the world. That's not how it works. Stop protesting about how shitty your life is and do something about it. Telling people you are angry at the system is stupid. That's like yelling at a door because it won't open without turning the knob.
and enjoy your 15% tuition hike every year until you graduate. People don't protest because their lives are shitty, but because the lives of so many others are.
The system may be flawed, but I believe it was unnecessary to push that camera into the officer's face; they were simply following orders. As for Guantanamo, guess who just came back from there? Don't talk about shit you don't know, it makes you a damn hypocrite.
@ally09x all humans are hypocritical by necessity, life is rife with contradictions. Students have held many events without police showing up in numbers to intimidate and oppress.
No one pushed any cameras into police officers faces.
Police officers pushed their faces into our cameras. They never stated any rules or regulations we were breaking that would justify our removal from the area.
"because we say so" is not reasonable, the students should decide, not administration.
@ally09x Just following orders was the excuse the Nazi's used for throwing people in ovens and they were all hanged. I just hope you weren't involved in any of the evil shenanigans that go on at GITMO. Because your day of reconning is just around the corner you arrogant fuck stick!
@kingg213 What the hell are you talking about? Do you think we abuse those guys down there just because the "media" says so? They have more fucking rights than us! Get your fucking facts straight before you open your big filthy mouth!
@seanbow12 indeed, let's all go watch some paid sock-puppet read to literate students a pathetic power-point presentation provided by text-book publishers.
If you don't know of the short-comings of our educational system you might want to get out of the classroom and start reading some honest literature on effective education.
Read a book, perhaps "the deliberate dumbing down of america"
@premitive1 sounds like your school sucks... our teachers actually cared about our education... guess that's the benefit of going to private university instead of a state funded school....
i don't know if you care about your rights, but it scares me when people get arrested without being told the reason for it.
i'm no occupier. i'm just some guy that is doing the best i can to make it in life, but i know our rights, and this is crazy! i've never seen a video of police not stating miranda rights until now.
their civil rights are also your civil rights so you should care.
Check out the story of what happened here by googling for this article: "FIU Police Arrest Occupy Activists For Attempting Concert". Apparently the young people were following rules which were repeatedly changed and tightened on them.
You can do all that in front of GC if you want. FIU can tell you to stop if you're being too loud an disruptive. Stop instigating as if you're these oppressed people. If you want to make your movement succeed, play ball and behave within the rules.
Where are they when the "pro-lifers" are in front of Graham Center with their pictures of aborted fetuses? Whoever shouted that this is a corporate funded institution is right!!! IT IS NOT A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY IN OUR AMERICAN TRADITION!!!!!!

Butthurt because you all got arrested for disrupting class. Im pretty sure the rest of us are not paying for classes to listen to a couple of retards on a loud speaker.
@faithlessleap your right, your paying for classes so you can be a couple thousand in debt when you graduate and cannot find a job. your paying for classes so the university can keep charging you more while the department heads and president all get six figures. sure.
@oye1904 well sure if you go and study something worthless like art. Nobody is stopping you from working hard to go earn six figures. Btw all those people worked shitty slave jobs like we work, and they wanted a better life and worked hard. Im disgusted by people my age who expect to be given money without working for it
@faithlessleap funny, Im disgusted by people my age who feel that the occupy movement is just worthless. Not everyone studies art, some people study business, law, medical, etc. the problem is that tuition keeps going up and that prevents many people from studying and working towards a better life. You can make six figures, go ahead, good for you! but at least make it possible so that the next generation can do the same. dont raise tuition higher and higher while giving yourself a raise.
@oye1904 It is worthless. Its people looking for free shit. Last i checked when all the cubans came from cuba..with NOTHING. No money..no friends, and everybody hated them, they busted their asses doing mediocre shit and pooling money together in order to get by. And now look at this town, its run by the people who were willing to WORK HARD. And not bitch. Now sure is education expensive as fuck for almost no reason. Yea sure its astronomical. But standing around bitching isnt helping
@cutekitten718 Nope. Only need to read Miranda when they are being questioned. Don't let TV be your sole source of knowledge of the law. It's often wrong.
you need a permit to protest anywhere... the point is that your right to freedom of speech is protected, but the public order needs to be maintained... if you guys wanted to protest you should have followed proper regulations. plus... using loud speakers is in itself not peaceful bc it may cause a noise disturbance.. thus the reason why you need a permit. stop complaining and know the rules.
@TheVickyisbest You need a little more information. They *agreed* to not use mics or percussion instruments and to go acoustic -- after they were told no drums or amplification. The cops got on the phone with the University, came back and said "you can't do acoustics either." The area under question has been used over and over for protests, demonstrations, teach-ins, etc.
I honestly think this is ridiculous. If you dislike FIU as much as it comes off that you do, then leave and go to another university. There is really no need to "occupy FIU" and antagonize the situation further. YOU chose to come to FIU so you can choose to leave it just as easily.
I'm upset about the economic situation too but I pay money to go to that school and I'd be pissed off if I was in class and couldn't pay attention let alone if I was taking a test. A university is not the place for this movement, makes you look like your against education.
@thomazwrx a public university is not the place for this conversation.... either is a public park. Where do we have the conversation then? universities, in my opinion, are places of free thought. This movement belongs most in a university.
@thomazwrx while the movement is about corporate greed and inequality, part of that inequality is unfair tuition and student loans. besides, if you take it to the door step of companies, you get another New York. were already there! if you cannot protest in New York, downtown Miami, public universities (free speech zones?), public parks, then where?
"embarrassment" is much too antiseptic. How about a flat-out violation of constitutional rights? A total disgrace. And you know if something like this happened in Cuba or Venezuela, without any context, FOX news, Univision and the right wing would be jumping and down yelling "COMUNISTAS! COMUNISTAS!"
@ZPaez But who will give them peace? Hopefully those arrested students will find forgiveness in our lord and savior Jesus Christ for protesting to poor unsuspected lambs.
@ZPaez maybe they take turns. Some go and write emails and speak directly with FIU and others play the drums and avoid showers and when they get bored they switch tasks.
@Occupy1YourMom Then why isn't that being made evident if they have taken the protests to FIU? It seems like they're protesting to the students. Preaching to the choir, aren't they?
I don't care what they are protesting, they are just so freaking ANNOYING on campus. People living in tents on the lawns, walking around with no shoes on, holding up signs and playing music and yelling at students just trying to get to class and hang with friends to join their cause..it's just embarrassing to see all that on campus.
I'm sorry they got arrested, but please..just take straight to the student government or the board of trustees and good luck
@SouthPaw3321 Free Speech can be annoying sometimes. How do you feel about raising tuition rates? take that to the SGA and the board of trustees. They will give you about five minutes of their time and do nothing about it. This is a reaction to the blatant ignorance of the FIU community to address student issues. Some of us refuse to lay down and take it any longer.
@oye1904 So they're going to stand around and take it? Because no action is being done. Even lobbyists have to make some phone calls.
Besides garner attention to the movement, what has the movement done? They're going about the protest in a way that only hurts them. People see them protesting, see them being arrested, and then they get out and do the same thing over and over again. Nothing is getting done.
@ZPaez well. i have talked to them. seen them going office to office. have you spoken to the occupiers? what has the SGA done, they are elected to do these things but have not accomplished much for us. I respect the occupiers for bringing the issues to light. People see them getting arrested and hopefully some people will ask why and begin to investigate. The movement is still young! :)
@oye1904 I respect the occupiers. I don't respect the tag-alongs that are only there to troll the police. Mr. Camera-man? He could've simply video taped the proceedings and made his insights afterward. Instead, he chose to accuse the police of being derelict in their duty and complain in an overly loud voice about how many people were being arrested. Instead of reporting it and showing everyone what the movement is about, he was joking around and making needlessly snarky comments.
@ZPaez granted the video is not the best, and the commentary is not professional. But it was a surprise raid. you cannot expect everyone to perform at journalism caliber. im glad you respect the occupiers and I am interested in knowing how you feel about the arrests without charge?
@oye1904 I don't know exactly what went down, but it seems to me like they're being detained rather than arrested. If they were arrested, I'd assume the actual conversations would've been had in the privacy of the cars.
I can only imagine what those cops were thinking when they had to pull out several students while being yelled at. I watched the UC protest (both before and after the Pepper spray incident), and I was downright terrified of that mob. Unruly students are fucking scary.
@ZPaez The UC protest was much larger! this was a group of about 50 to 100 people. barely a mob. They were cooperating and did not deserve to be detained much less arrested. To my knowledge, if the police is going to detain you for questioning, they must have a valid reason and must let you go if they have none. You cannot hold someone against their will if they are not under arrest, and you cannot arrest anyone without reason.
@ZPaez Actually behind the scenes, they are writing letters and making petitions and contacting FIU big ups, just because they stage something public to get the message out there does not mean they are doing nothing. Also, this starts at the grass roots, you get the message to the people who need to hear it most who are the students and the faculty, some of whom at FIU support their movement by the way.
@oye1904 I'm well aware of what FIU has planned for the future and I like it. I hope it works and the result is the increase in the value of our degrees in the future.
@SouthPaw3321 The plans for the future are grand indeed. But cutting classes and raising tuition do not work for me. I want to graduate as soon as possible. If they can limit the growth just a little bit and provide more classes that would be wonderful!
@oye1904 I'm not opposed to them, I just seriously don't want to see this on campus. Especially since the result is this all-around embarrassing event for the students, cops, and university being recorded and put on the internet.
@ZPAEZ This students are not being "trendy". They are protesting unfair treatment this government offers its future. They are actually doing something about this. What are you doing?
@Occupy1YourMom They're protesting in the same way a child protests being treated unfairly. Life isn't fair, we all know this.
The focus lies in what we do to remedy this. Standing around and protesting might have been a good start. But what now? The Occupy movement is huge. We can't all just be sitting around in hippie circles playing drums. Have they attempted to address the College directly? How about many of the foundations that provide funding for FIU scholarships?
@ZPaez That is all part of of what they are doing. This myth about sitting in hippie circles... smh. Occupy is actively trying to contact all departments of the university, but are being ignored or dismissed. sometimes you need an event to gain support. The student body is disgustingly apathetic! How would you go about doing things?
There aren't enough words to describe how fucking stupid this kind of thing is.
Any modicum of respect that the Occupy movement can garner is being pissed away by people like this. Students who don't take the time to research their shit think it's "trendy" to sit around acting like they're protesting something. Yeah you can bring it to the public eye all you want, but if you don't actually do anything to lower the cost of tuition, then what are you trying to accomplish? Ignant ass folk. -.-;
@ZPaez How do you know these students haven't studied the issues of tuition costs, student debt, or the problems with education in general etc? Various Occupied encampments have held teach-ins on these and various topics. In reality, this movement is a mixture of education and direct action. Remember, the media tend to focus on this aspect -- in order to caricature and ultimately harm the movement.
@counteringlies Im sure some of them have studied the issues. Many probably know much more about the issue than I do.
But the problem lies in that many of these people are only doing this kind of thing because they see it on TV or Youtube and think it's cool. They don't know the underlying facts and many don't care. People who fling out "Don't arrest students!" or "Why aren't they being read their Miranda rights?" are making the rest of them look bad. Again, ignant. ;p
@tfujiwara6 not exactly. the reason why i support them is because they actually go out of their way to bring student issues into public eye, much more than the SGA has ever done. Like the fact that FIU has increased tuition significantly and will continue to do so for the next decade (15% per year). Issues like while tuition goes up, classes are cut and professors quite. While you may consider them annoying, they are actually getting work done and making people talk about the issues. productive!
love how the majority of FIU students dont understand the Occupy movement! Who cares if theyre hippies or triathletes At least some of them are up to date w/news &whats goin on in the world the rest of u are too concerned w/urselves &what ur gonna have for lunch its a public university Its expected that a shit ton of people are going to be loitering But apparently if ur loitering w/a cause thats worthy of arrest The system is flawed It needs to be fixed &u need to wake the hell up
@Slothsome agreed. At least they try to bring the issues to light. the student body needs to wake up and start defending their rights to an education!
@Slothsome don't, they're, what's, going, yourselves, going to (not gonna), it's (x2), and it is "you're loitering." You also missed a fuck ton of .'s and ,'s maybe even ;'s.
At least those paid sock-puppets taught me how to write half way decent.
@ShinyaMerveilles66 Well, I don't. Since I applied for the AAA in FIU last year, but decided not to go, the Economics teacher has kept me in his emailing pool. I happened to receive this video by email.
Which is why I wanna know the rest of it, cause this video does not explain it very well. Oh, and BTW, Miranda Rights are read after they arrive at the police station, prior to the questioning/interrogation getting underway. If the officer tries to question the arrested individual on the car trip down to the station, the arrested individual withholds the right to keep quiet by executing his fifth amendment right by either waiting until his Miranda Rights are read,

Although, given the circumstance at the time, the one who filmed it did a good job in doing so in light of the ever-changing situation that he found himself in the middle of, regardless. If the officers acted in the form in which they did so, they must have had a good reason to do so, or else they would have not done so. They just do not walk up towards a crowd of students and begin to arrest them, left and right, all because they felt like doing so.
@Aceron2012 The cop in charge apparently said that "if you are going to do drums they are going to call me"...so maybe the drums was the issue? Here is the other video watch?v=v0C6xmUO5BA
So answer me this, why where the whole slew of 'em arrested like that all of the sudden? I mean, don't they always hold their little ''Occupy social gatherings'' down there in the DM pit, ever so often? Why were they apprehended EXACTLY? That is my itching inquiry about the whole situation? This short video does not address that part of the story, at all.
@Aceron2012 Hey they same user of this video has a 2 1/2 min video where the cop is talking to them, but the volume is REAL low...maybe you can make something out of it He mentioned "drums" and "permit" twice watch?v=v0C6xmUO5BA
my question is, why were they arrested? was there a fight, violence, threat of violence, anything besides a group of students coming together to voice their opinions? Honestly, clubs gather all the time to fund raise or just discuss events. Students assemble all the time to discuss politics, play games, whatever! why these particular students? What is FIU so afraid of?
@oye1904 Here is a short 2 1/2 min video of the cop in charge talking to them ...the volume is real low but I think the cop said something at the 1 minute 26 second mark "if you are going to do drums they are going to call me" and then something about at "night" check it out watch?v=v0C6xmUO5BA
Karma will take care of those "enforcers " of the law. Every dog has his day!

@ZPaez No they were arrested. For "interfering for education". Apparently there is such a stupid thing.
Vundablog 1 month ago
@ZPaez Actually behind the scenes, they are writing letters and making petitions and contacting FIU big ups, just because they stage something public to get the message out there does not mean they are doing nothing. Also, this starts at the grass roots, you get the message to the people who need to hear it most who are the students and the faculty, some of whom at FIU support their movement by the way.
Vundablog 1 month ago
@oye1904 I'm well aware of what FIU has planned for the future and I like it. I hope it works and the result is the increase in the value of our degrees in the future.
SouthPaw3321 1 month ago
@SouthPaw3321 The plans for the future are grand indeed. But cutting classes and raising tuition do not work for me. I want to graduate as soon as possible. If they can limit the growth just a little bit and provide more classes that would be wonderful!
oye1904 1 month ago
@oye1904 I'm not opposed to them, I just seriously don't want to see this on campus. Especially since the result is this all-around embarrassing event for the students, cops, and university being recorded and put on the internet.
SouthPaw3321 1 month ago
@SouthPaw3321 Well said.
It just makes everyone look bad. =/

@SouthPaw3321 it is an embarrassing event; students being arrested and not charged. it needs to be addressed.

@ZPAEZ This students are not being "trendy". They are protesting unfair treatment this government offers its future. They are actually doing something about this. What are you doing?
Occupy1YourMom 1 month ago
@Occupy1YourMom They're protesting in the same way a child protests being treated unfairly. Life isn't fair, we all know this.
The focus lies in what we do to remedy this. Standing around and protesting might have been a good start. But what now? The Occupy movement is huge. We can't all just be sitting around in hippie circles playing drums. Have they attempted to address the College directly? How about many of the foundations that provide funding for FIU scholarships?
ZPaez 1 month ago
@ZPaez That is all part of of what they are doing. This myth about sitting in hippie circles... smh. Occupy is actively trying to contact all departments of the university, but are being ignored or dismissed. sometimes you need an event to gain support. The student body is disgustingly apathetic! How would you go about doing things?
oye1904 1 month ago
DONT SHOOT THE CHILDREN.
Occupy1YourMom 1 month ago
@Occupy1YourMom Point made.
ZPaez 1 month ago
There aren't enough words to describe how fucking stupid this kind of thing is.
Any modicum of respect that the Occupy movement can garner is being pissed away by people like this. Students who don't take the time to research their shit think it's "trendy" to sit around acting like they're protesting something. Yeah you can bring it to the public eye all you want, but if you don't actually do anything to lower the cost of tuition, then what are you trying to accomplish? Ignant ass folk. -.-;
ZPaez 1 month ago
@ZPaez How do you know these students haven't studied the issues of tuition costs, student debt, or the problems with education in general etc? Various Occupied encampments have held teach-ins on these and various topics. In reality, this movement is a mixture of education and direct action. Remember, the media tend to focus on this aspect -- in order to caricature and ultimately harm the movement.
counteringlies 1 month ago
@counteringlies Im sure some of them have studied the issues. Many probably know much more about the issue than I do.
But the problem lies in that many of these people are only doing this kind of thing because they see it on TV or Youtube and think it's cool. They don't know the underlying facts and many don't care. People who fling out "Don't arrest students!" or "Why aren't they being read their Miranda rights?" are making the rest of them look bad. Again, ignant. ;p
ZPaez 1 month ago
@tfujiwara6 not exactly. the reason why i support them is because they actually go out of their way to bring student issues into public eye, much more than the SGA has ever done. Like the fact that FIU has increased tuition significantly and will continue to do so for the next decade (15% per year). Issues like while tuition goes up, classes are cut and professors quite. While you may consider them annoying, they are actually getting work done and making people talk about the issues. productive!
oye1904 1 month ago
love how the majority of FIU students dont understand the Occupy movement! Who cares if theyre hippies or triathletes At least some of them are up to date w/news &whats goin on in the world the rest of u are too concerned w/urselves &what ur gonna have for lunch its a public university Its expected that a shit ton of people are going to be loitering But apparently if ur loitering w/a cause thats worthy of arrest The system is flawed It needs to be fixed &u need to wake the hell up
Slothsome 1 month ago 12
@Slothsome agreed. At least they try to bring the issues to light. the student body needs to wake up and start defending their rights to an education!

@Slothsome don't, they're, what's, going, yourselves, going to (not gonna), it's (x2), and it is "you're loitering." You also missed a fuck ton of .'s and ,'s maybe even ;'s.
At least those paid sock-puppets taught me how to write half way decent.

Aceron2012 1 month ago
@Aceron2012 The cop in charge apparently said that "if you are going to do drums they are going to call me"...so maybe the drums was the issue? Here is the other video watch?v=v0C6xmUO5BA

Interested, I never heard that. I'm kinda confused now, so drums sparked all of this then? LOL.
Aceron2012 1 month ago
So answer me this, why where the whole slew of 'em arrested like that all of the sudden? I mean, don't they always hold their little ''Occupy social gatherings'' down there in the DM pit, ever so often? Why were they apprehended EXACTLY? That is my itching inquiry about the whole situation? This short video does not address that part of the story, at all.
Aceron2012 1 month ago
@Aceron2012 Hey they same user of this video has a 2 1/2 min video where the cop is talking to them, but the volume is REAL low...maybe you can make something out of it He mentioned "drums" and "permit" twice watch?v=v0C6xmUO5BA

my question is, why were they arrested? was there a fight, violence, threat of violence, anything besides a group of students coming together to voice their opinions? Honestly, clubs gather all the time to fund raise or just discuss events. Students assemble all the time to discuss politics, play games, whatever! why these particular students? What is FIU so afraid of?
oye1904 1 month ago
@oye1904 Here is a short 2 1/2 min video of the cop in charge talking to them ...the volume is real low but I think the cop said something at the 1 minute 26 second mark "if you are going to do drums they are going to call me" and then something about at "night" check it out watch?v=v0C6xmUO5BA

miranda is used for any type of interrogation, not for arrests. what exactly was going on here besides the students being detained?
