So I bought a pretty prebuilt gateway computer but it came with an awful stock motherboard that doesn't allow CPU overclocking... Whats the best motherboard that I should buy for this baby that will accept the current ram I have, and have 2 PCI 2.0 Express slots for my GFX cards? (Nvidia GTX 560 ti)
@Jdawg0529 If you have the 920 Than Visit newegg.com. brows the 1366 platforms and find one that supports your current memory. when selecting any motherboard make sure the memory you have is compatible. check the qualified vendor list of your motherboard for the memory supported. This is the most important thing you should do when selecting a motherboard. The memory you have may not be supported since it came out of a OEM Gateway. PM me your specs and ill be happy to help you further.
@esponert105 All chips are different, however at stock with a room temp of around 70 degrees farenheit. my core temps are around 28 to 30 degrees celsius.
@Zer0K3wLL Yep my bios is fully updated, I also have a vid on how to update your P6X58D-P motherboard. The P6X58D is not the best overclocker any way.
if got i7 920 c0 @ 3.8 ghz 1.296v ram @ 1604 100% stable apart from when i use sleep mode god damn corsair still did't deliver a firmware update to fix that unless you dont use intel rst drivers.
@Marovnc There is CO and DO, DO is a revised /better design of the chip. The CO chips use more volts to reach the same core clock as the DO. In return a DO will overclock a lot better and run cooler than a CO. In this video i have a average DO stepping 920. some batches are better than others
@bohemiangrove I use real Temp and Core temp. also the ideal temperature range would be nothing over 70 degrees celsius.. 80 and above is warmer than ideal and any thing over 90 is way too hot.
Also if you have a Asus board with a turboV chip. I will be making a video on how to properly use turboV to overclock while in windows.
@bohemiangrove I Have never used the product. However the customer reviews off newegg.com it seems it does a good job. there are some complaints I would encourage you to read the reviews from Newegg [DOT] com and TigerDirect [DOT] com.
Hey I OC'edmy HP Pavilion a250n Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.60GHz to 3.00GHz. And my computer still going slow. I went to My computers and right clicked it and went to properties it says its overclocked too (2.60GHz 3.00GHZ).
Will these instructions work with a I7-950 on a Sabertooth x-58? I only have a Corsair TX850 watt, and am running 2 hd 6850s crossfire, plus other components, should I upgrade my psu?
i have the same motherboard and my temps are around 69c 70c 100% load and after 3 hours of prime95 i get a blue screen, sometimes even when i play games or watch videos on youtube i just copied everything from your vid :P
@NAOCIA007 did you had blue screen before overclocking?if yes check if your ram is compatible with your mobo, othewise blue screen caused by the oc.try to lower the hz.always check the memory before and after oc.remember, there is a little diference to oc even you have the same system.
@md11fan772 Thanks for the info, but I fixed the problem by adjusting the CPU Volt from 1.35 to 1.40 no blue screens at all, temps are around the same :)
@4PsychoNitro There is CO and DO, DO is a revised /better design of the chip. The CO chips use more volts to reach the same core clock as the DO. In return a DO will overclock a lot better and run cooler than a CO. In this video i have a average DO stepping 920. some batches are better than others
@WARFOX101 Oh cool, thanks. I think I might just have the DO (Revision: DO?)... Right now with my Asetek Liquid CPU cooler (Idk name) I get an avg core temp of 34C and at 100% (for 8 mins) > 68C. Do you think I should upgrade to a Corsair H70 to OC @3.4GHz~4.0GHz?
@WARFOX101 iF YOU START GETTING MID TO HIGH 70'S TO LOW 80'S I WOULD GET A BETTER COOLER. HOWEVER IF YOU ARE IN THE 60'S TO LOW 70'S AROUD OR ABOVE 4.0ghZ YOU SHOULD BE FINE... OOPS SORRY CAPS. :)
The 20x Multiplier is an unstable multiplier.Multipliers like 19x and 21x are the most stable ones.IF you are not getting a stable overclock with the above settings.Try BCLK - 193 and Multi - 21.
Once stable slowly reduce the vcore and find the lowest stable voltage and keep it at that. Also You can run a regular overclock at max 1.3625V do not go above that.
Also if facing unstability reduce the memory multiplier to 6x which is also very stable. And also reduce the QPI/uncore voltage along vcore
@ut2k4wikichici I agree. However at the time of this video i had my 5870,s blowing hot air into my back rad and did not realize it lol. also running 4.0GHz with high volts and with Hyperthreading on. I have a different set up now thanks for your comment.
@ArcticBStv LOL yea... However i have a different setup with new fans , rads etc. running 4.2GHz cores in high 50's low 60's with HT on. With HT off low 50's.
I have a i7 920 D0 steeping myself... I have a 4.2 Overclock when at Full Load under Prime 95 or Everest CPU stress test...
BUT... when i turn off prime 95 and the Everest Stress test the CPU than goes back down to 2.4 ghz... it's like the cpu only overclocks itself when the speed is needed...
but i was wondering if i can get my cpu to run at 4.2...24/7 without the speed going down when i am not using a Full Load...???
i hope that you understand what i'm trying to say.?
@Rocism01 Hi Rocism01, You need to go into your Bios and disable C State Tech and C1E Support. C state tech and C1E support are power saving features. Its best to turn these off while overclocking so your volts and frequencies don't change on you. Read the video description. I go over all the stuff you need to turn off and the reasons why. I hope this helps, if you need any help please ask cheers.
@ibanezel Yes it is, At the time of this video i had inadequate water cooling. plus my 5870 was blowing hot air into the rad lol. my system runs vary cool now 4.2GHz full load at 65 to 68 degrees. also there is a big jump in temps from 3.8 to 4.0 and big jump in volts as well. i went from 1.24V @ 3.7 TO 1.33V @ 4.0GHz.
@ibanezel I use Prime95 and Linx. I run prime 95 for six hours than run Linx for 50 runs. A lot of people run Prime for 24 hours. But IMO there is no need to torture your CPU to death. If you can clear 50 runs with Linx you most likely are 100% stable. I only use prime to test my cpu with small fft and my memory with larg fft.
@WARFOX101 okej thanks well i use prime95 also! im doing some overclocking right now with memory and cpu. thanks alot for awnser! yea i agree i only use prime for like 4-8 hours that dose it! Have not find any game that makes the computer have a harder time as when im doing prime tests!
the overclocking ur doing here is it for jus cpu overclocking......or is th gpu oc and ram oc as well...i am asking this because i only have cpu watercooling ????.
@ixy1987 Only the CPU. However the cpu and memory are linked together with the i7 platform. So when you up the core speed your memory speed increases too.
@ixy1987 No so long as you run it at it's rated speed. If you have ram rated to run at 1600MHz like i do and run it at such than you dont need watercooling. For example i can hit 4.0GHz with my 920 and my ram running at/or around 1400MHz. At 4.2GHz my memory runs at 1603MHz if i push my 920 higher at 4.3 my memory will hit 1632MHz. which is fine because im not pushing it to much over its rated speed. in my video i use a x20 multiplier but its best to use a x21 for the i7920.
nice vid bro i just hope others dont pump that much voltage into their 920's you dont need that i see u dropped it to 1.29 what temps ru getting with that vcore
@LaffenFXP Yea my temps are High :( Part of the reason is, I did not realise that i had the hot air from my 5870 pouring into the bottom part of my duel 140 mm rad that is mounted on the back. lol. I'm having HD trouble now so i cant check to see how much the temps dropped:(
@LaffenFXP I have a duel 140 mm rad mounted on the back of the case my 5870 was blowing hot air into the bottom part of it. Check out my "Core I7 Gaming computer" video it shows my setup and yes i am going to add one more 5870 and water block them both. I have a build coming up Project refresh.
@LaffenFXP yea i come to find out that i cant get a stable overclock under 1.31 volts. I got a bad bad chip. it is a DO stepping. But it runs like a bad CO lol. Also i found out my pump was running at half speed i fixed it so my temps are now around 60 to 68 under full load.
if u didnt realize load-line calibration raises your voltage for how much it needs, use hardware monitor and you will take it off and get the right voltage thats why ur temps were high
@WARFOX101 did it work for you? and does this mean to just disable load-line calibration? do i need to do anything else? i have same system as you, but only oc'd to 3.2 ghz
@vmv5813 From days of testing it seems i get a more stable clock with load line calibration enabled. @WARFOX101 i can tell u something noctua cooler and thermaltake case Rock ....
no need lot of connection .. just imagie a radiator on a CPU...
maybe not beautiful as cooling water... but the thing is, this noctua use very low power for a great cooling performance. i mean 1,8 w witch cooler can be some good and have such a low power demand
Nice tutorial. I also agree the temps seem a little high.
I'm using the P6T, 920CO, and a V8 OC'ed to 3.8 and I am getting about the same temps as you are, maybe a little lower running Prime 95 for 24hrs. Just thought I would share my specs with you, so you had something to compare yours to.
I have never used air cooling on my CPUs so I'm not really sure. I have read of people going to over 4.2GHz on the THERMALTAKE CONTAC 29 CPU COOLER with a push pull fan setup.
Hmm...i will probably just go for 4.0ghz in push pull. I do not really think I need to go water. Fan noise does not really bother me too much ;-)
For the sake of argument, if i DID want to go water cooling, do you have any recommendations for a i7920 water cooling set up? What kind of clocks can you expect with water cooling? Are we looking at a LOT more upkeep/maintenance for the system over a heatsink/fan combo?
@Ripklawe I have my Noctua NH-D14 with a 920 going at 4.009. I run the prime95 small FFT and get my temps up to 68 MAX. So, I'm pretty safe and stable.
@lucasabu just bought the same noctua, my friend use the d12 but at 3,5 ghz, and he is at 30 degree celciua, i think you need to upgrade your case fans or change your fan direction ... you will get better air movement... a great fan synchro will drop the head a lot .
So I bought a pretty prebuilt gateway computer but it came with an awful stock motherboard that doesn't allow CPU overclocking...

What is your Bios version?

I'm just a moron. I thought I had to change to manual, instead of just adding the numbers right away.. my mistake :)

Hey! Great video.
I'm soon going to have the i7-920 with the P6X58D Premium board, now I know how to OC to 4.00GHz, will be using the Coolermaster V8 with 12Gb of XMS3

What is a reasonable amount of overclock to see on an i7 920 with an aftermarket cooler? i do not really feel the need to run a liquid cooled system.

I have never used air cooling on my CPUs so I'm not really sure. I have read of people going to over 4.2GHz on the THERMALTAKE CONTAC 29 CPU COOLER with a push pull fan setup.
WARFOX101 2 years ago

@lucasabu just bought the same noctua, my friend use the d12 but at 3,5 ghz, and he is at 30 degree celciua, i think you need to upgrade your case fans or change your fan direction ... you will get better air movement... a great fan synchro will drop the head a lot .
i have element g case so pretty good
