  • can we actually say: "that person is burying THEIR head in the sand" like Steve is saying here?

i mean, English is not my native language, just wondering..

  • Здравствуйте!

In informal English many people use the pronoun 'their' to represent his/her. However, in academic English his/her would be the only one commonly accepted.

Я надеюсь, что это помогает вам!

    До свидания

    Steve

  • Right! I understand this from a zoologist's perspective, nevertheless, we still use the ostriche in this idiom !

Ostrica ! That's interesting as I know there are similar words ending in ' a ' for oyster in Portuguese and Spanish. I wish you all the best in the UK and I am happy my videos are helping you!

    Ciao! Ciao!

    Steve

  • hi steve

ostriches don't ever put their head in the sand. never!!

    it's just a legend!

and more, ostrich in italian sounds like "ostrica" that means Oyster in english.

anyway, i want really to thank you for your lessons. I'm going to work in the UK and i find them so usefull.

could you say something about diminutives, endearments, augmentatives. we use them a lot in italian.

    thanks again. ciao

  • Hi gescmex,

Try to learn as much as you can from native speakers by immitating them! Why not practise in front of a mirror or if you are living in a country where English is the mother tongue, you could join some community groups where everybody speaks English.

    Take care!

    Steve

  • Very amazing videos..Your're a great teacher.. Do you now how to increse my english to sound as an engish speaker...I'm a care rep and sometimes the people who I speak with, notice that I'm not an american. Is there a way I could have some extara lessons, cuz I'm not in an english country and it is very frustrating..I know the practice could help, but I think I need more help..Thank you for share those videos and hope you can answer. Have a nice day!!

  • Hi!

    Get over = recuperate, recover

"I've got to forget someone"? (I know that "to avoid" and "to forget" someone can mean the same thing, but for me there's a difference...)"

Get over means forget in this case. It doesn't matter if you avoid them or not, the important thing is 'to let someone go'

    Steve

  • Oh, now I understand.. Thanks, you're a very good teacher, Steve!

  • Hey Steve! I wanna know if when I say "I've got to get over someone" it means "I've got to avoid someone" or it's more like "I've got to forget someone"? (I know that "to avoid" and "to forget" someone can mean the same thing, but for me there's a difference...)

And by the way, your videos are helping me so much! :)

    Thank you!

  • This is the best way to promote a language, by teaching it in such a delightful way. Legislating a language has been proven fatal, see Québec or Catalonia. You are doing a great job!
