I used to hate this ending, then an alternate interpretation occurred to me. Who isn't in the prologue? Elisabeth. Why? Because she's not restless, or chained to her life. She found her freedom in the end, she finally was able to be with the being she'd loved her whole life - And in that moment of personal triumph, she finally truly escaped, and her soul moved on.
Looking at it that way, whether it's the intention of the ending or not, it changed it to my favorite ending. :D
I am currently doing a project on the Enlightenment and this really brought into focus the conflict they were talking about with the austrian empire being a driving force behind it all
sorry...ran out of room...2 questions...#1 what ever became of her 2nd daughter, the one that did not die, and has this ever been performed in America or England to your knowledge? again THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I know it took a lot of time to do, especially as a college student
WOW! just...wow...This was one of the most amazing stories I have ever seen and I don;t know how to tahnk you enough for translating this. I understand German and am able to speak it somewhat, but the subtitles helped enormously. I could not help but admire her strength and yet cursing her for her stubbornness in the desire to be free. I really felt like I was there in 19th cnetury Europe expereincing this story. I really do not know how to thank you enough!!!!! 2 questions
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!! I love this musical, was introduced to it through Takarazuka, but this version is magnificent as well. In any case since I can't speak either Japanese or German I never really had all the details of what was going on. Everything is so much clearer (and more tear-jerking) now.
So Mate's Der Tod doesn't carry her off....he leaves her and slinks away while the minions pull her into blackness. That's pretty brutal, and VERY different from Pia/Uwe's ending.
@humansRpepul2 Some productions end with Death carrying her off, while others (and the original staging, which means Pia and Uwe did the same ending also) ends with Death killing her with his kiss and putting her body in the grave. Michael Kunze said he prefers the ending where Death carries Elisabeth off.
@Anarculfin I know! That's one of the great things about his character. He does a lot of horrible things to her, making her go through hell, but in the end he actually does love her.
Thank you!! I love you for doing this, this is definitely one of my all time favorite musicals. Keep on subbing, people like you are really appreciated!!
Now that's what I call a bittersweet ending. I always love to watch the curtain call at the end, because even the characters who hated each or died just gather around smiling holding hands, and bowing.
Wow. -happytears- it's finished. You did it ^^ Thank you Havanah, thank you so much for all the work and time you've put into this, and good luck with whatever you choose next. -huggles-

isn't der Tod sweet. Like he could not believe that she is finally at his side. He seems so incredible happy
