@luminousnerd The top pistons exist to destroy the water flow, preventing the water from falling down and destroying the melon stems. In my experience, they're absolutely necessary.

I'm working on building a melon-smashing attachment. On my server, we compress the melon items back into blocks again for mass storage, and we have a stand-alone machine that breaks the block back into items as soon as you place it there, which is handy when you need a stack of melons and don't feel like breaking them all.
I'm using this in my town on t9k's server, it's pretty good. Thanks for the tutorial.
