i had the same kind of thing to the toilet issue in the first story...i was in a club and a bit drunk as well...two BIG men picked me up and took me to the womens...that was about 2 years ago now...lol...
sometimes i forget that not everyone (cis folks) don't have to worry every time they need to use a restroom. how NOVEL.
my family refuses to use the correct pronouns for me, which in public places makes me extra nervous.
i have been yelled at & even chased out of restrooms. people grab their children. seriously. it SUCKS. thanks for this post red. i got to see you perform in Oakland, and you are super rad. i hope to see you again sometime.

Love this! I think anyone who bends their gender even a lil bit has had to deal with the complexities of bathrooms. in the end I guess it's always a bit of a crapshoot. lol Thanks for sharing your experiences!
@misspollyy i wouldn't say that *anyone* who bends their gender even a little bit has had negative experiences trying to access restrooms. which is why the subject of passing privilege comes up. there was a time that i wasn't safe using either the men's or the women's restroom.
(i may pass now, but the fear has not diminished. i make mental notes about where to find gender neutral bathrooms. thankfully they are fairly common in my area these days)
As a trans man I have had similar experiences at the airport. I tried to use the women's room. Bad idea. I simply cannot go in anymore. My voice, skin... everything. And when a man walks into the women's room, it's /chaos/. Women are like, jumping on the toilets and screaming and fainting and well... you get the idea.
@enterprisingbones i know what you mean. once in vegas (before i transitioned, i'm a trans guy) a woman yelled at me and chased me away from the women's room. when i worked at a health club/community center, women would grab their kids when i'd walk in (w/ my employee badge and everything), give dirty looks, and make shitty comments. there was a point in which i couldn't go into EITHER bathroom in public cause i didn't feel safe or that people would let me be.
I'd also like to add that bathrooms can be scary! And the whole notion of "passing" bothers me in the first place -- does it mean I'm taking a test every time I go out in public??
Ur too funny. I've had a few guys go back to the entryway to check that they were in the right bathroom, ur reenactment of the look they give was so accurate.
My girlfriend had problems in russia because she was chased out of womens room. Thing is, she wasn't even trans. But she liked russia, at least she wasn't picked on by men all the time. :P For me it almost seems more easy to go to womens restroom because women don't give a crap while men give me weird looks and probably think I'm a homosexual. Which I am, but then again not in the manner they assume.

I really enjoyed listening to this, especially the latter part about passing as a privilage, or lack, thereof depending on the context.
Passing-elitism really gets my goat for two reasons:
1) because passing is purely subjective
2) transition is about becoming yourself, not jumping from one cliche to another
Thanks for sharing ^^

Yes, it is far too terribly shameful.
