I read that now I'm reading Dark Victory. I was hesitating at first because of Robin. The whole Batman loner thing has grown on me. But if these are the same guys who did Holloween, I'm sure the mood is right.

great review! I was always a Marvel fan but after the Nolan films I started to explore the Batman universe. The Long Halloween is a great story. It really is a murder mystery, a novel, and a comic all at the same time. great stuff.

The list of classic works that Frank Miller has under his belt is VAST.
Miller is racist against Arabs. He supported the Iraq war and supports crushing the Palestinians. He also made the Persians look like fucking monsters in 300. His racism is obvious.

But when Miller makes a movie depicting Persians in such a way, everyone fucking loves and fails to see the racism. Because the world is totally biased against the Middle East right now. I think he handled the book clumsily, yes. But I hardly see how the Spartans came off particularly well: They talk of freedom and at the same time abandon weak or deformed babies in the mountains. They talk of the King's ability as a mediator and then show him kicking Persian emissaries into a well. FM also show the Spartans hypocrisy; they call Athenians boy lovers, failing to mention their own enforced homosexual man-boy practices. That was intentional. You are deliberately ignoring these.
I'm just saying...none of that makes up for depicting Persians as monsters. Let me make a GN/Movie depicting the Jews as monsters when they kicked hundreds of thousands of Palestinians out of their homes. Let's see how well Hollywood will take that. It's okay when it's middle easterns, but when it's Jews or another race, it's not. FM is a hardcore Zionist and even admitted that he thinks Muslims as a whole should be regulated and denied certain rights.
Yeah, but there's a flipside to what you're saying. A lot of people think that Muslims are given preferential treatment and so on. I don't think many would take a hardcore anti-Muslim film or TV show particularly well. But this issue of Judaism/Islam is one of faith and not ethnicity, and is off-topic regarding what we're talking about. I agree with you when you say that a lot of 300 could be taken as racist. I think that clumsy writing is responsible, not any real bigotry on Miller's part.
I'm just saying that when I saw 300 I raised my eyebrow a little bit..and when I did more research on Miller...I realized that a lot of his thoughts on politics seem to reflect a similar type of biased against Middle Easterns. Making something monstrous IS done for effect. But have you even CONSIDERED a different effect, rather than just jumping to the conclusion of racism. Read it a year or so back. The story is one of my favorites. The overall idea of the chaos in Gotham slowly getting worse and worse as the months go by was rather creative. Great book, and thanks for the 101.

I actually got a free copy of the whole story just a couple of months ago, and just finished reading it last week and I thought it was fantastic. I've never been heavy into comics or graphic novels but I really enjoyed this one.......Batman: Dark Victory is another good one

yeah, it's definetly a neat place.. if it was less windy it would've sounded much better.. although it would've been less halloweeny (is that even a word, if not, who cares, I just made it up) :)

I actually got a free copy of the whole story just a couple of months ago, and just finished reading it last week and I thought it was fantastic. I've never been heavy into comics or graphic novels but I really enjoyed this one.......Batman: Dark Victory is another good one

there's a new boxset for the long halloween, 35 bucks, comes with Long Halloween, and 2 figures that are modeled after the art style in the comic. (Batman and Joker.)
You've got perfect timing though, I'd been thinking about gtting that but didnt know much about long halloween.
