actually Speilberg didn't write A.I. Ian Watson did. Speilberg adapted for the screen. And Kubrick was the one who wanted to make this movie in the first place.
@brendina94 Actually, He did. It was his last film, and halfway through it he passed away. Look it up. It even Says his name on the box. Steven Spielberg finished it for him, and everyone thinks it's a Spielberg film.
@JabbaDaGrif77 It is a Spielberg film. Spielberg started it after Kubrick died. It was Kubrick's vison. Asked Spielberg direct it in 1995, and Spielberg started in 1999 after Stanley died. So even if Kubrick was alive, Spielberg still would have directed it. You should look it up. I know I sound like a dick now, but I just want to correct you so you have the right information haha.
@brendina94 Lol you don't sound like a dick, you sound like you have a brain, and that's a good thing. We need more people like you lol. And you are correct too. I had my info wrong, but still, it is Kubrick's last vision, and it's sad that many don't even know that. And I'm glad you do
@JabbaDaGrif77 Thank you. Im glad this was settled peacefully. Nothing on the internet is like that lol. I wish Kubrick was alive to see how this movie turned out. I think he would have liked it.
@brendina94 Lol I know right? Lol everyone on the internet usually goes crazy, simply because no one can see who they are lol. I agree. Kubrick is the greatest director of all time, personally, and I am a huge fan. My favorite film is Barry Lyndon. I bet he would've been proud. R.I.P. Stanley
I firmly believe this movie came out too early. Ideas like the ones displayed in the film are more firmly entrenched in the mainstream culture of today, and are growing. I would argue that it's due to the widespread adoption of the web and its participants, and to the growing public awareness and consideration of artificial intelligence leading to conscious-like states, virtual simulations, robotics, the semantic web (Watson), nanotech, and so forth. This movie would've killed in 2011.
@DoktorMadrak One of the screenwriters hired by Kubrick backs up Spielberg's statement. Read again what I have quoted, go to the link at visual-memory.co.uk, Maitland strongly disagreed with Kubrick about the end but he wanted to stick to it no matter how hard she tried to convince him it was a mistake.
You can argue all you want the end is all Kubrick's. The softer scenes are all Kubrick's. One again there was a reason why Kubrick wanted Spielberg to direct the movie.
@DoktorMadrak Common misconception: most of the darkest parts of the movie are actually Spielberg's. For instance did you know that the very end of the movie that most people believe to be Spielberg's insipid sentimatility is exactly what Kubrick wanted it to be, Kubrick even had a "fight" with one of the screenwriters he worked with over this issue:
visual-memory.co*uk/faq/index2.html#slot14
Replace * with a dot
That's the reason why he wanted Spielberg to direct the movie...
And all the parts of A.I. that people accuse me of sweetening and softening and sentimentalizing were all Stanley's. The teddy bear was Stanley's. The whole last 20 minutes of the movie was completely Stanley's. (...) I'm the guy who did the dark center of the movie, with the Flesh Fair and everything else. That's why he wanted me to make the movie in the first place.
@maxulic Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I don't believe Mr. Spielberg. Oh, I'm sure the beginning was Kubrick. And perhaps the middle was Spielberg. But the end reeks of the kind of trash Spielberg has put in several movies. I think S. likes to end movies with aliens. (Indiana Jones most recently). Since we can't ask Kubrick, unless I see original notes in his hand, I won't believe he did that.
@DoktorMadrak For Ms. Maitland, the film would end with David preparing a Bloody Mary for his mother, the juice a brighter red than in real life: "He hears her voice, and that's it. We don't see him turn to see her." Kubrick, however, wanted a coda in which the new race of robots, because of a technological limitation, cannot keep the mother alive after reviving her. The movie would end with David in his mother's bedroom, watching her slowly disappear.
I know all about women- about as much as there is to know- no two of them are ever alike, and after they've met me... no two of them are ever the same. And I know where most of them can be found...
i saw this movie on Sept. 11th 2001. i came home from the movie theatre, and the destruction of the WTC was on TV. that's why i'll never forget this movie.
@igotthatsnowmayn ...wow.. I hadn't heard that. Why would they want to kill themselves after seeing Avatar? Then they wouldn't get to see it ever again! I don't know about anyone else, but I've seen it like 50 times lol almost as many times as Princess Bride and Moulin Rouge ^_^
this movie is so sad and whats sadder is they have made robots so whats next for them...all the robots will be our slaves...why do humans have to be such asses
I painted 5 paintings .. inspired from this scene .. colors , facial expressions , motion technique , spirit . this is the greatest cinematic character after the JOKER [heath ledger] in the Dark knight 2008 for the another genius director Christoper Nolan
... because he knew himself wouldn't be able to carry these scenes as well as Spielberg.
Ms. Maitland was displeased this scenario, and was furious with Kubrick for insisting on it. "It must have been a very strong visual thing for him," she says, "because he wasn't usually stupid about story. He hired me because I knew about fairy stories, but would not listen when I told him, 'You can have a failed quest, but you can't have an achieved quest and no reward.' "
actually Speilberg didn't write A.I. Ian Watson did. Speilberg adapted for the screen. And Kubrick was the one who wanted to make this movie in the first place.

By the way, Stanley Kubrick was the director of the first half of this. So this is Kubrick's vision, and Spielberg just took over.
