Ray Chapman was actually killed back when they didn't use a new ball for every game--balls were used until they literally came apart at the seams. A pitch came at Chapman's head and in the dusk, he didn't see it. After that umpires began using new balls at every game, but pitchers complained they were slicker than the old, beaten-up balls they were used to. Hence, mud.
This magic mud is featured in a short story I wrote about a year ago, entitled "Dirt". For a free e-copy of Dirt, go to smashwords, where you will also find also find my suspense/thriller for sale. If you like the one, I hope you'll consider the other. Thanks.
@utubesqueeze The brand-new balls they used before they began mudding were slick, so there were a lot more wild pitches. It all started in August 1920 when Ray Chapman, a shortstop for the Cleveland Indians was struck by a pitch and died days later. After that, umpires began looking for a way to add grip to the ball.
@lazarra101 because chalk is white, he mentioned that pitchers wanted it darker so they could have a grip on the ball. I don't play baseball so I don't know what that means...
Plus I can imagine that mud would stick onto a baseball much better than chalk would.
@kakashi710 Yea, in the rush to get the video done before the Phillies got eliminated in game 5, we overlooked a couple of tracks that were panned to the left only. Not usually a problem unless your using earphones, but glad at least your left side enjoyed!

Can anyone tell us how someone can be killed by a baseball NOT being mudded? He mentions it in passing at 0:45
