MY question is, why did they NOT stop the dyno run when the engine started to vent steam/water and make odd noises ~ 0:27 mark? If they would've immediately shut it down they might've been able to at least save the block and some of the rods. Unless this was an already bad engine.

CATASTROPHIC FAILURE! I'd say a con rod went first, jammed the piston up into the head or it fell, went sideways and got stuck and then the crank hit it and blew everything to pieces! Its nice though cuz all while that was happening, it removed the oil pan for you so you can easily access everything and rebuild it. lol

Reminds me when i test run a Volvo engine in dyno at a Volvo workshop one time. The cross joint shaft between the engine and the dyno snap in the dyno end. The shaft then hit the explosion cover inside and the bolts holding the cover snap so the cover was hit open. By that time i was standing by the engine with a steel plate over the turbo charger to stop the engine when i see the shaft together with the plate to the flywheel up in the roof rotating like crazy before it land in front of my feets

you can see the engine taking load on the mounts and twist when whatever inside the dyno failed, followed by the grinding soung ( dyno grinding ) but when it locked down the engine started blowing pistons probally sheared the crank at the flywheel and still tryed to run as it was never shut down. that was a dyno failure that killed the engine

At the 25 sec mark you hear a howl as something inside the motor seizes, because you see the motor torque over.I think the grinding you hear is what's left of aconnecting rod chewing, it's way through the bottom end. And then it all hits the fan!!!! IMO.

@felson99 after watching it again it looks like it did fail under load, you see a little lever deal drop on the dyno then the engine mounts take rotational load and it throws 3 rods/pistons before it finally chugs to a stop still trying to run on whats left, so the crank must have survived, the fact it blew 3 pistons suggests pre-ignition from too much turbo , like someone didnt hook up the vacume line to the turbo wast gate and it over boosted to pre ignition under heavy load

@meattube4u33 diesel engines are compression ignition engines they do not mix fuel with the air coming into the engine so it cant pre-ignition. The engine failed due to rpm because the fluid coupling for the engine dyno failed and let the engine red line under full load

this is a truck engine, and becouse of 6 cilinders and alot of torque is stil rotate even if it is blown. one piston was fail and the other five is stil pushing it. that why was so violent explosion.
