Probably one of the best male singers on the planet,he was also responsible for the Jacksons he gave them their first big break on his tv show, god bless Michael Jackson and thankyou Andy Williams for discovering him dai wad
Amazing tone from Andy Williams. This is back in the day when they had to do their own singing live on their television shows. Proves how good he really was. This song was composed for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's and it almost didn't make it into the movie. The producers hated it! Shows you what they know about music. Andy sang it at the Oscars and it won Song of the Year.
@TimesTimes3 Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini had some choice words for those producers, too. In Mercer's biography, it's a pretty funny story. They ask Blake Edwards what the hell a "huckleberry friend" is and he says he doesn't know so they call up Mancini who says he doesn't know so they call up Johnny Mercer the lyricist who of course is already half-drunk and he tells them to go screw themselves, probably in that wonderful accent of his.
@StraitUpSuburbanite The song was written for Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Andy Williams' version is the most popular...and in my opinion this live version is the best..my god it seems effortless
JackRabbtSlim ... This is one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion, by one of the best composers of our time. I'm not sure how you could not understand the song, but maybe try watching the movie .... although Idon't believe the song requires that .... except that the movie should be watched.
If you look hard enough there are still good songs being made. Sure the ones being blown up by media aren't so great, but good music is still being made. It's saddening to think that people are so negative these days.
Back in the long forgotten 60's Andy Williams was the love of my life. Notice that there are no firewords, no excessive background singers - just Andy singing. Sigh, 50 years later .....
There isn't anything to be said. It was meant to be sung like this, absolutely perfect. Take a look from 1:45 , and they called Frank "ol' blue eyes"?
This to me is a flawless performance by Andy, you just don't see this kind of stuff live anymore. No backing track, just the soft vocals of Williams. The audience hushed and entranced, you can feel every slight tremor in his voice. We engage with Andy, and it takes me back to my childhood memories I shared with my best friend.
i was baking cookie with him...then i heard him sing this..i asked " what's a huckleberry friend..? and he looked at me..and said " I don't want to eat burned cookies.." the song reminds me of how sweet are those burned cookies when shared with someone you love so dearly
Moon River has been recorded over 1000 times, but when its creator, Henry Mancini, thinks of it, he thinks of Audrey Hepburn singing it in the movie. As great as Andy Williams version is, no one ever sang it better than Audrey.
"moon river" has never stopped to enchant me since i was in elementary. now in my 40th year..it still has a magic to drift me away someplace wonderful, serene...
We have some reminiscence software at work with all sorts of applications useful for people with dementia. Including a small selection of karaoke tracks of classic old songs including this one. Anyway me and one of our ladies, who is 89 and very demented sang this together and she was word perfect. She has a lot of trouble finding words the rest of the time. Anyway we looked at each other as we sang and saw each others eyes fill up. It was lovely.
You know, I'd like to be all happy clappy and politically correct and say everyone style of music has its good qualities and we should all respect this and that etc etc...but you know what, I'm 23 years old and I firmly believe the majority (not all but most) of modern music, say in the last 20 years) has been frankly WOEFUL, lady whatserface and justin thingy and god knows what else we have to put up with on the radio.
It is not happy clappy nor pc to treat others as you wish to be treated, regardless of our opinion of others taste in music. Change the radio station, there are stations which play different types of music.
@engreena Believe me I DO change the station, but it's not good enough imo. Do you ignore failing education standards and focus on a few good students, do you rally for good architecture or just accept constant glass'n'steel boxes as we get these days, do you accept cheap GCI-laden hollywood trash (and it is TRASH) that constitutes the majority of stuff now coming out, or do you say it;s not right and we want better?
I'd like to just ignore what the music industry has become, but I can't!
@JackRabbitSlim If you want to hear creative, unique music, you're gonna have to search for it. Music made for radio and t.v. is the result of a fairly precise formula created to exploit basic human desires and make profits. The commercial music industry has no room for creativity when there are profits to be made!
Oh my goodness. How beautiful! And now Gianluca Paganelli's covering some of his songs. I absolutely love his version too. He's an Italian tenor and it sounds very beautiful in his voice too.
There is a very long river in my country that pass many cities. Only in my city this beautiful and peaceful river named Moon River passes the middle of the town. Whenever and wherever I hear this song when I'm far from home I feel warm and feel like I'm home.
My HuckelBerry Friend .... this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever experienced in my life .... (and one of my favorite songs is "Sweet Home Alabama", so I've got a range ..... but I LOVE this song.
It's no wonder I loved Andy Williams growing up in Scotland, even though the 70's were my teen years !! Guy was classy, humourous and of course a wonderful singer !
I can't get into this version. He's got a nice and well-trained voice, but there are too many vocal delays to convey the melody. I like the simplicity of Audrey's version. It's almost entirely a mere acoustic guitar and her voice, and she doesn't throw in any flashy techniques; a bare minimum of vibrato, as well. Its beauty is in its subtlety. It makes the melody and chord progression so much more powerful. Personal preference, I suppose.
I met this wonderful man at his beautiful restaurant named after this song in Branson, Missouri. We got a picture with him to send to my great grandma. Although I really didn't know who he was I researched him and discovered I already knew many of his songs. A legend then and now.
I will turn 50 next year, and I lament that life is not what it was when I was growing up in America. I know I am not alone in these feelings, and yet we are silent in this collective lament. I know we long for an America that was. Can we reclaim this time? Can we?
there are many singers...there are many good-looking singers...there are even a few who are great singers and fabulously good-looking...and then there is Andy Williams, all of that and also a man with a rarer gift still...class...
Some singers have such identification woth a song that they really do own it musically, even if written by someone else. This one is Andy's. As Autumn Leaves belongs to Doris Day. Both great talents to me.
We need not speak i'll of Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber. Just let us put aside. This music of Mr. Williams is a true balm for those who lived through a time that romanticism and love were expressed not only in Brazil but also worldwide in its purest form.....
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Such a beautiful song, beautiful voice. It's perfection of the old days <3
I like the balance of what we get to listen these days. One day you shake your booties listening to Gaga or Beyonce, one night you sit with your darling listening to Andy or Lionel.
É uma das música que mais gosto. Essa música embala coração dos amantes e de admiradores que tem um filtro espiritual particular. Todos que admiram essa música tem algo que posso chamar conformidade(harmonização) universal.
This beautiful song as well as many of Andy's songs was literally a lifesaver for me back in 1965 Houston, TX. I would take the vinyl and my small record player to the bathroom to escape my abusive step-father,There I would escape into "Camelot" on the "Moon River" with "Ave Maria". It is true that Andy's music literally saved me from committing suicide and probably from murdering that abusive step-father.Thank God and Any that I made it through all that and am alive and sane.
@TheKdavis51 So glad you " made it." What a wonderful story - I'm sure Andy Williams would love to hear it, too. Perhaps you could get an address to write to him at ?
@engreena I agree, we can't just ban it, but alot of today's modern music is getting way more recognition and attention than it deserves, the music industry don't promote good old music. My main problem with modern music is that it's so simple and uncreative, older music is much more complex and interesting to listen to...
For 'Moon River' (an SF song on an amazingly wide river on Moon), Andy is the best. Great performance. The Moon River was discovered before TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly 1).
@Alflecks69 Amen to that, and i'm such a romantic sap that I'm always imagining that I'm singing this to a woman I admire whenever I lip sync along to it.
My 2 favorite performers of this wonderful song are Andy Williams and my son playing a trombone solo of this song in all county band. I'll never forget either version!!
With all due respect to what is called music now, what happened to the real musicians? The singers who sang into one mic and the musicians who played the music behind them? The real entertainers. Too bad . The magicians behind the scenes could make my dog a star and frankly speaking he can't sing.
Ppl in 60' were so hot, womans as guys now we have more wannabemacho or wannabeplasticgirl than ppl like em :(

This song belongs to Andy Williams' voice. His sings it with a crisp, crystalline quality.

Such a beautiful song, beautiful voice. It's perfection of the old days <3
I like the balance of what we get to listen these days. One day you shake your booties listening to Gaga or Beyonce, one night you sit with your darling listening to Andy or Lionel.
We're lucky, so stop fighting :)
