Today in the Arizona Republic newspaper there was an article about a former track coach at a Phoenix High School that was he illegally and the great long arm of the arm had him deported back to Mexico. I'm sure Sheriff Joe is proud of his capture and deportation! I will copy and past the headline for the article! "Deportee Struggles to Readjust to Life Outside Phoenix." It doesn't matter if it's 1948 or 2012, this backward state that is full of Republicans has not moved forward one bit!
@bucksalmon1 I have not found out yet. I had an hour talk with the reporter the other day and he did not make it clear. I know the coach had a fake social security number. Also, I asked the reporter to give him my email so I could find out from him without a middle man, middlemen lie! I have not heard from him yet, it's been a week. I am actually subbing at the school where it happened. When I told the Mexican kids, they did not even know it happened! That stunned me!
@bucksalmon1 Also, the "Deportee's" name is Miguel Aparicio! I am moving out of this country after the semester ends. I told the Mexican kids, that if people in America won't stand up for each other, even their own culture, they surely won't stand up for an old white guy like me! This upsets me because my mother came here from Romania and was so proud when she became a citizen. I also was in the infantry in Vietnam and proud of that too but this society is sick and dangerous!
I cannot find the original version by Woody Guthrie, but I really like this version a lot. The fact that he took part in it makes me like Johnny Cash even more.
Johnny Rodriguez has a very good solo rendition of this on here. It is titled only "#1" which is a shame because it really deserves to be heard. He does a terrific job on it.
Unlike many of the other songs on Highwayman, "Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)" is a cover of a relatively well-known song, originally written by Woody Guthrie and set to music by Martin Hoffman, a schoolteacher. It is a protest song telling the story of a plane crash that occurred on January 29, 1948, during the deportation of a group of Mexican farm workers from California back to their country of birth.
@Webmusher Sad to say this goes on to this very day where poor people are taken advantage of, and yet consider them Deportees. Let us in our own neighbourhoods create justice, and fairness for fellow beings, and remove Deportees from our thoughts, but keep friends, acquaintences, and fellow workers as our buddies.

This thought provoking song needs to be played with regularity in Arizona, particularly in the state capitol.

@Webmusher I liked the Concrete Blonde/Los Illegals version of the song as one verse was in Spanish.

Woody Guthrie wrote it as a poem in 1948. The melody wasn't done for at least a decade. It was highly political, as are many of his songs.

I remember hearing this back in the 1980's when I was in highschool. I didn't realize back then how meaningful (political) this song was.
