Definitely not hating on Dirk but his toms and snare sound a bit trashy and loose. It could be the recording quality. Dont get me wrong tho. Dirk is on my top drummers list!
I just gotta say, he is definitely one of the most skillful, creative drummers. He can groove good as hell, he can play excellent pure death (Aborted).
The drumming on Vacuity is also just dripping from taste and condifence.
What Derek imo can still learn (hej, no way I'm as good is by a mile, but still) imo is that sometimes leaving a few hits out can make the part more powerful. Mario from Gojira knows that for sure.
But still, both are in the top ranks of the metalscene imo, when you don't just like to speed, but the overal picture.
Oh man, Gojira's drumming is very tasteful, I'd even call it "characterful/ confident" it just sounds freaking confident. I usually hate abstract/subjective words, but cmon, you want more of it!
Not to mention one of the best metal drumsound/mixing on The Way of All Flesh . Come on now, check the snaresound at Esoteric Surgery. Erection! :)
Dirk often also brings a really good groove to the music, which I don't really see the other mentioned drummers to a lot.
In the end it's a matter of TASTE ofcourse, there's is no "best" drummer because of that. Out of the 3, Dirk is definately my most favourite/interesting drummer.
Gavin Harrison is one of my favourite alltime drummers. One of the most groovy/tasteful/musical drummers of alltime. Ultimate balance between basic song support and experimental stuff.
Didn't mention him because I'm just talking metal here :)
Whilst this guy is DEFINETELY one of the best metal drummers going, I'm going to have to say I'd give the shining trophy to Gene Hoglan who used to play in Strapping young lad.
Take a look at some of the drumming he did for the track skeksis and you'll see what I mean.
It was awesome meeting Gene at the 2nd Soilwork concert I went to. When I realized I was standing a foot in front of him, I pretty much shit my pants.
dude come on now at 0:38 he rolls the most solid blast beat with nasty backbeat fills, everyone thinks derrek roddy is the blast beat master but this dude is truly solid, he blasts perfect and he flows so well... not to take anything away from DR but Dirk is the champ.
flo and George are great but neither of them are as solid and flow as well as Dirk does, they just don't. Watch all there video's and then watch Dirk, hes just better.
I agree, the new Nile is better than previous, but Georges shows little more there. Always the same drum rolls, extremely fast double bass, lack of dynamicity at the beginning of the songs, exept Iskander, where at last (!) Georges shows some good rolls. I'd take Hellhammer and Dirk over Georges and Flo any day of the week
@iplaywithnoshoes lol, have you heard Kollias' drumming on the Cerebrum album? Way more creative than anything Dirk ever did. Flo is also versatile, at least as versatile as Dirk... who says Dirk plays anything other than different types of metal?
@ryder187mac Dude..... playing THAT fast with THAT much groove on Deconstruction..... Kollias is awesome, but 'c mon, Dirk just really kicked him in the face with Deconstruction, The Panic Broadcast, Antares, SDFX2, and ESPECIALLY Scarve, Irradiant. Not saying Kollias is BAD, but Dirk is just better then him.
@NitroCoasters Actually, you can't that Dirk drummer is better than George, neither George than Dirk. Because they both got their pros and cons. And it's mostly based on opinion. You can, however, say that Dirk is your favorite drummer, because he does things that appeal to you.
both are from the Nuclear Blast Allstars album, first one's called The Gilded Dagger, featuring the guys from sonic syndicate on vocals, and then Devotion, with jari maenpaa from Wintersun. fuckin brilliant cd...
The first song is "The Gilded Dagger [feat. Richard Sjunnesson & Roland Johansson - Sonic Syndicate]" and the second is "Devotion [feat. Jari Mäenpäa - Wintersun]". Both from Nuclear Blast Allstars - Out Of The Dark ;)
fuuuuuck i know i know this song but i just cant find it on the albums. Help me out dudes!

Agreed, but I would suggest you check out Gavin Harrison.
Not a Death Metal drummer by any means, but has by far the best groove I've heard within the realms of any extreme metal.

Ahh well staying in the realms of Death Metal, and Porcupine Tree then.
You could also (if you haven't already) check out Martin Lopez, he used to be Opeth's old drummer.
He used to bring such a jazz groove into the death metal sections that flowed seemlessly together. He was alot of fun to watch and listen to.
Nubnut 2 years ago
@SinisterSkip drumming is only a matter of groove, anything else is totally misunderstood, I guess??
