Herlea has (or still has!) a gigantic voice, ideal for Rigoletto, Scarpia, Jago or Gerard. But he sings this virtouse aria very easy, with full of humor. Great! Like if you want to carve a small whisltle with a big ax!
The only drawback of master Nicolae Herlea, was that he comes from Romania during the comunist period when no one spoke about him internationally. So, he suffered of lack of marketing. He could remain in the western Europe, but preferred to come back and still lives in a flat in Bucharest. May God bless his voice and his whole life. You will never hear such Figaro and revenge aria in Rigolletto. He was the best of his period, but Tito Gobi who lived in the same period got more marketing.
Best of the best I heard him firs time when I say: ,,Is impossible, we do not have any good singer" (I am Romanian like the artist) and I search on you tube and I could just hope to find someone, and guess? I found Nicolae Herlea
Would you be so kind to tell from which recording is this taken?
I just bought VOXBOX CDX5159, recorded 1960/61 with Chorus and Orchestra of the Romanian Opera of Bucharest under Mihai Brediceanu and sound a little different from your upload.
I do not like to seal someone as "The Best". But here we are in front of a masterclass. Singers in those times had the time to prepare before going to scene. Now on there is too much rush.
Kunnen de watjes van baritons tegenwoordig een voorbeeld aan nemen. Grote stemmen worden door de heren regiseurs gemeden tegenwoordig. Dus hoor je ze niet meer!
He has a v. pleasant voice on the light side for my taste,a lack of depth. For my money Ruffo is peerless, I've listened to perhaps 30 oreven 40 different versions. But thats just my opinion.
Few months ago I was about to decide that he IS actually the best(2 me)baritone not Warren. Listening to this brings to mind Giangiacomo Guelfi! Same sound...especially when Herlea makes a stentorian sound(usually at the end of a phrase)I definitely hear a Gobbi influence in there. But I gotta say, my all time favorite Baritone is still the incomparable Lawrence Tibbett. His "Largo" is the best I think. Just the flexibility & range in that aria while still composed & focused. With 3 B-flats too!
The best baritone voice and technique that I have heard since Leonard Warren. What a shame that the political situation kept his art from reaching a wider public in the west. Thanks for posting.
No, we have not. At least those who love opera. In fact we are very proud of this kind of postings, generously complete aria and high quality recording, hopefully approved by maestro Herlea.
Here we are , the great Figaro , this is fantastic . I am tired of a little boy (lyrical baritone voice )as Figaro , this a nice one , bravo .... a great real man voice .
from my pont of view Nicolae Herlea is the best bariton ever...i have many operas with him..pagliacci;il barbiere[...];don carlo;la fortza del destino;tosca;traviata;Lucia di Lammermoo;OTELLO; Rigoletto..many people dont know of him because romania was under comunist regime at that time..but he just got out a book about his life
Herlea is far superior. His intonation is perfect, timbre of voice is brilliant--great for Rossini, and the way he uses the words, amazing. There is no better. Bravo Herlea!!
Superb! He's in total command of his voice and the music. Perfect diction: he gets all the juice out of the Italian words without hamming. A master of comic patter. And he excudes all the confidence a Figaro should exhibit. One of the finest renditions of this great show piece I've ever heard. Truly great singing!
you didn't hear about him because he was singing in romania under the comuniste regim and they were not aloud to go in other countries back then. and now he's 80 and he's not singing anymore, unfortunately.
Thank you for posting this. He is one of my absulute favorite baritones. The Romanian Ruffo! Amazing how many people have not heard of him. His Germont with Zeani as Violetta is superb, as is their Tosca. What a legato. His open cover tone is beautiful. Please post more. Videos anyone?
TYes I do, you can buy one too if you write at his site. I baught one from a store but I want to buy one with autograph now:P I also have a romanian version of Rigoletto(unfortunatelly just music) with Ion Buzea(Duke), Magda Ianculescu(Gilda) and Nicolae Herlea(Rigoletto). I shall post some of that later on.

Wow, this is probably the best version I've heard.
That makes my favorite:
1. Herlea
2. Hampson
3. Milnes

This has been flagged as spam show
@leadoffeohippus
There are also
Ruffo/Straciarri and De Luca who IMO are better than
1. Herlea
2. Hampson
3. Milnes
Herlea has an excellent sound and technique but tends to sing
loud and louder which wears thin.
