  • Me and my Daddy play this song together all the time love the osbornes

  • Thanks srvgtr, I love-um all especially B.G. gospel, but when I hear someone say "Bluegrass", the Osborne Bros. pops in my mind first. There are so many newer groups [ Im glad to say] that will keep the music going forever. Another old favorite of mine is Mac Wiseman, I dont know if hes still living, I hope so, I use to listen to him when I was a young boy, lm 70 now.

  • I use to tell people," if you aint never heard the Osborne brothers sing Kentucky, youve been deprived & neglected", and its still true.

  • @BubbaRRNC

Now that I've heard it, I know you are right :-)

Feel free to pass on any other great Bluegrass treasures you know of. Tony Rice is my hero.

  • Great song love to here these guys they r great

  • I LOVE KENTUCKY!

  • Has anyone heard the Everly Brothers sing "Kentucky"? It's beautiful.

  • This is genuine AMERICAN music at it's very best!

  • thank you for this post. The one thing my late father and I shared was the love of bluegrass, especially the Osborne Brothers. My father got to jam with them many years ago and I just loved their vocal harmonization. We had the priviledge of seeing them in person many times. Thank you for the very fond memories.

  • @Katragew You're welcome! After Bobby went solo, I heard him on the Grand Ole Opry and his voice broke twice. I was afraid he had lost his voice, but then he recorded a duet with Rhonda Vincent, "Midnight Angel", and his voice is true, he punches every syllable, and I love it! If you haven't heard it, you should download it from Amazon for 99 cents. The clip catches a little of the harmony, but doesn't get to Bobby's solo verse. The Rhonda Vincent album is "All American Bluegrass Girl".

  • GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!

  • Thank you! "For that is where they'll look for me!"

  • i met the osborne brothers once during a show, there was a big difference between their attitudes at that time. I dont want to say which one acted in what way due to respect for all the great music they have done, But one was all smiles, handshakes and talked to each fan like long lost friends, The other came across like he could careless, was in a rush and didnt want to speak to fans. i ll let you guys guess which one is which. lol

  • WONDERFUL SOUND THAT LIVES ON !!!!

  • No group or duo has ever been able to harmonize as well or as beautifully as the wonderful Osborne Brothers. They are in a class by themselves. I grew up on their music. Always a treat to listen to.

  • @WendyKS93 I heard Sonny say that when they started singing together, they had to rewrite the music because Bobby's voice pitch is so high. Have you heard Bobby sing a solo verse on Rhonda Vincent's song "Midnight Angel"? The way he drives each syllable gives me goosebumps.

  • @SidsCardShop If you like really good harmonies also listen to The Rankins (formerly called The Rankin Family.) They're not blue grass - more of a "Celtic" influence but they offer four part harmonies - three girls and one guy.

  • @harryf200 Thanks! One of the reasons I am unhappy about churches dumping hymnals in favor of projecting lyrics on the wall is that it deprives worshippers of having the SATB notes. Soon (maybe now) only choir members will know there is something besides the melody.

  • I've only been to Kentucky once when I was 12 back in the 70's & we drove ther from Oklahoma, when we visited my uncle & aunt in Owensboro. It's a beautiful state.

  • @StevieB1362 You havent even been to the great part of the state. Go out east. Thats where its most beautiful at.

  • Who did Bobby Osborne Marry? They are my people on my dads side.

  • In 1979 these two brothers gave a 14 yr old boy his dream, to play bluegrass banjo with his favorite group in Wis. Bobby n Sonny Ill always be greatfull to you. i may not have ever met and played with all the talent i have if not for you guys. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

  • I remember well singing Grandpa Jones singing at the Grand Ole Opry back in 1977, when my parents were so gracious to bring my Brother and I here. I love this kind of music. Best Wishes LittleCountryDJ

  • superbement beau!!!!!!!

  • Kentucky was a UNION state. Never forget it.

  • @ytdsgdjgfueyxn537 I have ancestors from KY that fought for the CSA

  • this is so good!!! and on a live show. what great talent!!! thanks for this.

  • words cannot describe the beauty

  • Beautiful. Kentucky was the strangest place I ever lived. The people there were so nice I thought they were from another planet.

  • ONE OF THE BEST VERSIONS OF MY GRANDFATHERS SONGS IVE EVER HEARD !! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING ....

  • Anybody that don't like that, don't lettem in the house!!!

  • My Lord, it was the sweetest harmony ever, family or otherwise plain and simple, hands down !

  • Terry Eldredge is a magnificent tenor singer. He has a beautiful voice and even has some really nice vibrato. He sings lead on a Josh C.D. entitiled "Josh Graves" . On "He Took Your Place" .Terry's singing is beautiful, and the lyrics are great. Most of all, Uncle Josh Graves' dobro breaks are just gorgeous! You gotta check it out. You won't be sorry.

  • I have seen this great group of guys several times and never seen them put on a bad show they were always my favourites I really appreciate you posting this it sure does bring back some good memories like singing about my home state and me and my dad going to see the Osborne Brothers if they were'nt to far away.Again thanks for putting this on.

  • One of their most beautiful renditions...Glen Duncan simply shines on the fiddle! Terry Eldridge, vocals and guitar; the late Gene Wooten on dobro; Raymond Huffmaster seated with guitar; Terry Smith on the upright bass, and of course the finest brother duet (in my humble opinion) to grace the Opry stage: Sonny and Bobby Osborne. I was there that night...what a fun time and wonderful memory. Thnaks for sharing this great video!!

  • @shelibeane Thanks for the great comment. I'm glad I kept that VHS tape all those years.

  • @SidsCardShop

    Me too! :)

  • @shelibeane I remember this song as a very young man, it touches and sinks into the depth of my inner soul. This has to be the most real life song that i know!!!!!!!

  • looks like nba coach rick adelman on the hound dog

  • Did Sonny, hang it up,permamently ? They were quite the duo. They ought to be put into the Country Music Hall Of Fame, for their years of service, and 2 state songs.

  • I heard them doing this on the Radio AM 650 WSM, on the Opry live. It sounded so great. I seen them in a little venue, and told them Bobby said "how did it sound " ? I said GREAT !

  • That marvelous fiddler is Glen Duncan...one of the most talented fiddlers ever!

  • glen duncan is the fiddle player,

  • Anybody know or is kin to the McConnells out of Boone Cty?

  • Whispering Bill!!

  • very very nice videos tov toda

  • all i can say is....WOW!

  • how sweet....

  • Kentucky "The dearest land outside of heaven"

  • or the Prewitt, Abbott, or Settle families?

  • Yall from Laurel Country wouldn't happen to know the Kennedy's would ya?

  • This song best describes My love for Kentucky.

  • The Osborne's were always Top Drawer - Superior harmony and years ahead of their time!

    Great performance~

  • Yall might not believe this but the osborn brothers are my cousins and I first knew about them through my papaw and mamaw. They are also kin to my cousins in Leslie county kentucky yall. Go osborn brothers. Keep up the good work cousins.

  • bobby's my grandfather, sonny is my uncle who are you?

  • @Gvosb Im your 3rd cousin from Laurel County Kentucky. I am also related to the Roarks in Leslie County Kentucky.

  • @RayRoark2009

You kin to the Cline Family too?

  • @Gvosb As far as I know.

  • Great Job Bobby! How's Sonny? You guys are great!

  • Great shot ! I know Terry, he played with us(Groundspeed) in the Station Inn, Nashville 1988.

A couple month later we bring The OB to Germany together with Bill Monroe. I was the bassplayer and busdriver.

  • There is "NOTHING" better than this.

  • Actually I did get in contact with R.Huffmaster and he is the guitar picker and Duncan is the fiddle player.

  • Yeah! Top this song...

  • Excuse the ignorance but who is the fiddle player on this video.I think his overplay and interaction with Bobby is great.

  • Raymond Huffmaster. If you are on Facebook, you can search for him and send him a message. I'm sure he would be glad to get your comment personally.

  • I realize this is your video and you are smarter than me. But that out of the way, are you sure that is not Glen Duncan on Fiddle and Raymond Huffmaster on guitar? They are not on that long and I am no expert. Just wondering. Great song and post. Thanks.

  • No, I am not certain. Bobby rattled off the names so fast I cannot be certain. I simply assumed he meant Huffmaster was playing the fiddle because he is a fiddle master. I freely accept your correction.

  • Thank you. The problem with world class musicians is that they play any number of instruments very well. Both Duncan and Huffmaster are truly great on the fiddle but they also play mandolin, guitar, etc. As I said, I am not an expert and would welcome anyone else's opinion of who is on fiddle to help Jamiedaley.

  • @SidsCardShop Thank you! I have loved music for my whole entire life,of all kinds, born and raised in KENTUCKY! Thank You so much! Any musician, especially from KY, would be proud to play as well as these gentlemen! And if Anyone wants to disrespect this beautiful sound , they can respond to me personally and I will show them some "Ky Hospital- allity" :)

  • Just listen to that harmony at 3:18. They know how to rip out your heart.

  • Nobody sings it like the Osbornes.

  • i love this song.

  • thankyou for the post! i subscribe

  • That was not a decision Bill Anderson made - The Grand Ole Opry chooses who they want to M.C., who they want to appear, and who they want to be members of the GOO. They made Anderson a member 3 years before The Osbornes. Anderson has written more than 400 songs recorded by other artists. The Osbornes have written...zero? Anderson hosted "Opry Backstage" for 6 years, and co-produced "You Can Be A Star", which launched the solo career of Rhonda Vincent. Instead of spewing hate, read the bios.

  • Don't think the Osborne's have written songs, but I know bobby osborne is credited with quite a few copyright's of some very recognized songs. (Ruby, Pain in my Heart, Cherokee Lady)

  • @SidsCardShop Right on ! You know your Facts ! Imagine Country Music, without Bill Anderson. He even wrote "The Lord knows I'm Drinkin" by Cal Smith. If I'll ever need to know anything about Country Music,I usually ask Eddie Stubbs, and your the next runner up.

  • @SidsCardShop Not to be disrespectful or anything, but the Osbornes did write songs, and quite a few good ones.

  • string him up

  • Love these guys!!

  • I know the tune is similar to "You Are My Flower," but I do not believe that Bobby is deviating from the melody, like Sonny does when he plays a bit of "Reuben" in "Don't Let the Smokey Mountain Smoke Get in Your Eyes." I think the tunes are just similar. Maybe I am just missing it.

  • This tune makes me confused. Bobby's solo is definitely "You are my Flower". Are there more songs involved or just the usual Osborne family humor?

  • I do not hear "You are my Flower" in this, and Bobby does not do a solo. Please explain.

  • Listen at 2.35. Seems like the audience reacted. You can't hear it when you listen to the Louvin Brothers. Sonny does the same thing on "Don't let the Smokey Mountain....." Also the fiddler seems to be playing something else (2.00) but there I'm not sure.

  • They are going into "You are my flower" Often in Bluegrass when you have a talented band they can throw tidbits like this where you wonder into and out of a completely different song that has the same basic chord structure. Audiences often recognize the deviation and react accordingly. Makes for a nice suprise, dont you think?

I love this song, Great Job guys!

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks! I'm glad to know that I didn't made a mistake. It might be Sonny who started the deviation, though - or both.

  • Sure do miss the late Gene Wooten - the last of the Uncle Josh style pickers on the national scene. Everybody else on the national scene is playing the new Machine-gun "reso" style. Glad we have the memories of real playing.

  • Amen! My favorite was Pete Kirby. I have lots of his playing on CD, but very little video. I'll have to hunt through my VHS tapes and see if there's anything I can post.

  • Great song by great duo. One of my very favorite songs and Arkansas is #2. Thanks for posting!

  • wow..the osborne brothers have had two state songs..rocky top for tennessee...and kentuckeeeee.....

  • Quite possibly one of the best bands they had.

  • OH! Some great info, I suppose I am correct this was my grandfathers favorite song. He would be way over a 100 if he was still alive, that's why I wondered how old this song was.. My mom still buys these guys music. And to Txstoryteller, I couldn't agree with you more!!

  • That is some wonderful music; wish country music would return to its roots! FIVE stars!

  • Thanks for posting! You always post some great videos! I think I recall my mother saying this was my grandfathers favorite song, do you know how old this song is?? Thanks again!!!

  • Thank you Nana.

Karl Davis wrote the song, and recorded it with Hartford Taylor in January 1941 for the Columbia label. It has since been recorded many times, by bluegrass and country singers, including the Louvin Brothers and Everly Brothers. Because of the songs beauty and popularity, Karl Davis was made a Kentucky Colonel in 1970. (Based on Charles Wolfes Kentucky Country: Folk and Country Music of Kentucky, University Press of Kentucky, 1982, p. 56)
