  • who could possibly dislike this???? seriously!!! this is amazing!

  • Timeless song, the words speak volumes, love how u coupled the two songs together. Both renditons are jewels to the world, the world lost an angel when Tami's flame was exstinguished so prematurely if ever their was a candel in the wind it was her, Stevie must have been crushed.

  • beautiful!! xxxxxxx tammi!! beautiful stevie!! xxx both versions, moving, think of the ones you love or loved or gone or not with you or want to be with you or do not want to be with you,or you want to be be you or you want to be be you.... no matter.. love is hard ,cruel, high low, these two records bring out all love and emotion.!! [me personally,i finally happy!] you will be too. stick with it!!!

  • beautiful!! xxxxxxx

  • This song makes the sun shine inside me on grey day in South East London always. Beautiful.

  • Wow...who knew that song was so old???

Interesting (on another note) that her voice is SOO distinct when she sings with Marv...but solo...I can hardly recognize her as Tammi . Anybody agree?

  • @DavisNetPromos5550 I think that may be down to the fact that this song was recorded before she'd really settled into her groove as far as how she sang on record. That voice with Marvin is indeed distinctive though :)

  • @VFlowers24 I was saying this music is what the bay area feels like!!

  • so sad she died so young. David Ruffin beat her all the time. so so sad

  • I see I'm not the only one that cries when I hear this song. Stevie Wonder is something else; he was only 16 when he wrote it.

  • Due versioni fantastiche................

  • I was only a teen when she died so young, I was already in love with her...So much pain when I learned she died...I thought I would also die that night.

All I thought was about her for weeks when I listened to her music.

I never stopped playing her songs every night before I went to bed.

Ironic...hey? How you can fall in love at such a young age with an icon.

My heart still breaks when I listen to her music or see her...and I'm 65...Love this lady,...so sad to see her die...not fair.

  • I LOVE THIS!! BAY AREA MUSIC!!!

  • @bgoins21 what bay area music she's from philly

  • I believe that Marvin and Tammi were not romantically involved, but I really believe that he was in love with her.....it shows all over his face consistently in every photo.

  • This has been one of my favorite songs that Stevie ever recorded. But, WOW!! the Tammi Terrell version is soooo touching. Even though the Stevie Wonder version is uptempo, there is still a poignancy to the song. It is captured so faithfully in the Tammi Terrell version. Fantastic song!

  • he was only 16 and wrote this song!!!! no wonder he became stevie wonder!!!

  • i liked Tammi's version but at 2:57 is when i almost started to cry, every time stevie's version comes on it hits me in my musical soul and makes me want to cry

  • wow...thank you for posting!

  • A bit of Motown history i did not know. gchaed great post and research.

  • oh wow, i always knew Stevie wrote this song back in the sixties but I never knew he wrote it for ms. Terrell

  • This version is sooooooooooo pretty. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Wow....I knew Stevie version but never knew he wrote it for Tammi until now. She would've been a huge star had she lived.

  • @dh1173 Most definitely!

  • Thank you for putting these two great versions together in one video!

  • i love TAMMI... she is a great singer

    BUT STEVIE IS WAY BETTER

    HE IS A GOD

  • Died too soon of a brain tumor. Wonderful heart and voice. Don't neglect if you have terrible headaches. OK? I am not kidding here.

  • Died too soon of a brain tumor. Wonderful heart and voice. Don't neglect if you have terrible headackes, ok?

  • her voice is pretty

  • if they both didn't die so young. they where heroes till the day of today.

ps. im only 16. i love this music.

  • @CeesusBeats I'm 17 and I love this kind of music also!

  • Hey, I'd never knew that Tammy Terrell recorded this! It's always been one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs and I thought it would be hard to top, but I have to say I like Tammi's version just as much. Thanks for posting this!

  • STEVIES MUSIC IS TIMELESS

  • wish i could find a women who feels like i do when i listen to great songs like this rip tammi, pure genius with such beauty

    age 27

  • @cressy55555 This song makes me happy and sad. She sings it so well because those were feelings she had, I believe, for David and they weren't returned in a way that was healthy.

  • This is real singing. The people coming of age now need not admire Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus, to name a few. They should aspire to sing with the grace of people such as Tammi Terrell and other motown legends. Bless her heart, she died at the tender age of 24.

  • I love Stevie Wonder's version of this song. But, Tammi has her own twist and I like it. Please someone find some footage of her other than the two videos of her singing with Marvin Gaye their song, Ain't No Mountain High Enough. I believe every one of her fans would love to see her on The Joey Bishop Show and The Tonight Show when she appeared in 1967.

  • I'm stunned...I had no idea that this song was that old and that there was so much history behind it. I always knew that Motown recycled songs amongst their artists but for Stevie to wait 14 years then cut this song on himself.....wow.

  • who the hell dislikes this song?

  • I'M TOTALLY AMAZED!!!! I have always absolutely loved this song that I associate with Stevie. I had no idea that he wrote it at such a young age and that Tammi recorded it. Such a precious, precious work. I 'm crying.

  • You know, listening to Tammi give me so much courage. I am a singer and have been invited to go into the industry many times but I lost the courage after seeing so much loss over the years. I feel like she did, all I want to do is sing. But there is soooooo much ugliness in the industry and the loss of such great people such as Tammi, Marvin all the good hearted ones, just shuts me down. I sing at home to my babies and to my GOD. It can really give you the blues.

  • hi

i love this ,i sure wish i paid more attention when it hit. back in the city on hayes st in the1960s

tammi is a great special person, it is our loss that she is not producing here on earth at this time. we will have to catch up. when we get there, here now.

    pl

    pl

  • both versions r beautiful, both versions brings me to the highest low

  • Taraji P. Henson looks like her to me. She should play her in any film including Tammi Terrell

  • @BuenaventuraAvenue true that

  • @BuenaventuraAvenue They would have ten years ago, but I fear that Motown related stories are out dated. They will be making movies about the artist of the 70's', 80's now. In fact, the sexist industry of show business hasn't made many movies about female artist at all. Of course there was Tina Turners story. However, if they can bash the black male and show David Ruffin and James Brown beating Tammi to death, they may get the movie made.

  • Tammi sang the song pretty, but Stevie has this yearning quality that touch me to the heart. I was 10 when this song come out and to this day when I hear Stevie Wonder's version it can move me to tears. The true "Master Blaster" is Stevie Wonder!

  • OMG! i never knew she song this first! And to those saying David caused her brain tumor its not true altough they were in an abusive relationship she was also in an abusive relationship with James Brown before ruffin where he viciously beat her. You can read about it un both her sister Ludie's book && singer Mary wells she says "the hammer incident happened way before David she knows that for a fact."

  • @JERRiCKKABaBy hammer? what? why would anyone want to hurt her?

  • @mjjcng8958 Thats what i say who would want to gurt her but just abusive men i guess you can see it on TV One's UnSung tho

  • @JERRiCKKABaBy It was odd though. When I went online to watch the TV One unsung, they failed to mention all that David Ruffin also did to here. I wonder why? I read where he contributed to the abuse she suffered, as did James Brown.

  • @mjjcng8958 I believe she was a victim of what she was a victim of, because she would become submissive to these men who wanted to control her. She was extremely young, ambitious, and carefree, enjoying what she loved and was extremely friendly with many. They may have been intimidated, jealous, and possessive. Sometimes the young can be taught to submit to older men, she wasn't that way. They were too aggressive, thus the abuse. I am only speculating. SMILE!

  • @1024SueNelson it just makes me sad to think that women are going through these kinds of things.i mean submission is a word that is missed used by men who want to control women. any way i wish she got to live longer and make more music

  • I LOVE TAMMI TERRELL. Best female singer!

  • Love the video, gchaed! Wicked track!!! More love!

  • Stevie may have wrote it, but this song belongs to Tammi!

  • I had no idea he wrote this for her. Her version is bouncy and light; very easy to listen to. Stevie is a talented writer.

  • making sweet music in heaven no doubt.... RIP Tammi

  • I never heard this or knew it existed; Great find! Thanks

  • @Jaycool10

Me either. Unless you look on your own or connect with other fans, you don't know.

  • This very cool!

  • love Tammi Terrell was gutted when she died in 1970. This sounds more up to date than the dross of today. Stevie Wonder has made some great albums listen to them all the time

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for this. I never knew until today that Tammi recorded this song first. It's justice for both beautiful tracks to be together. This was Stevie's tribute to the beautiufl Miss Tammi Terrell.

  • @Mecobaby7 I love this version, but have you heard the Four Tops version?

Look it up and give a listen, Levi does a super job with Stevie's song.

  • @daveydee1142

I had no idea the Four Tops also had a version, I like it. Now you're gonna get me hooked on that as well. lol...

Thanks for the heads up! I listened to it, I had no luck finding it until I went to your channel, awesome playlist.

  • Wow, does anyone think it is weird that I am 13 and don't like any of the music today and love motown music? Like, I wish I was 13 back then!

  • @CupCakeMakeUpx

Not weird, just proving that you have great taste ; )

  • @CupCakeMakeUpx no one cares. Its not just you

  • @Cherryotaku95 get a life.look how long ago i sent that comment you must have really been searching for any reason to post a stupid comment, obviously people care hence the reason it is thumbed up. its fine if you dont care but simply dont look. and did i at any point say 'oh its just me who is young and hates todays music but loves motown music' no i think not hun. Its so funny how people get so brave behind a computer screen, especially when the negativity is so uncalled for in the first place.

  • This Tammi Terrell woman was something else ... deeply talented ... David Ruffin and Marvin Gaye were enthralled by her ... and so are the rest of us.

    x

  • One learns something new every day! there aren't many geniuses in our world. stevie, however, defintely qualifies as a true musical genius - was so far ahead of his peers in his writing and tune-crafting.....

  • WOW, never knew she sang it before Stevie. This version is sooo unique, both are great. Stevie's is still my favorite but this one has some serious musical dynamics going on...GREAT WORK MOTOWN

  • @1980Triumph

Certainly the Funk Brothers laying down some serious chops. Jack Ashford probably on vibes ...

    x

  • @GeneralTrousers

oh yeah, do you hear the awesomeness of this music. Makes me mad how people credit the Beatles.....nothing they made comes close the magesty of this recording, both Tamii and Stevie versions!!

  • My buddy, a music historian, told me that Stevie wrote this in the 60s but I had no idea Tammi sang it. I thought Stevie sat on it like he did with 20 albums worth of songs. He could release an new album a month for the next 20 years.

  • Thank you for both of these songs i like them tammi makes me feel good and stevie make me want to dance

  • This is one of my fave Stevie songs, I love when he sings it. I had no idea about its history...thanks for posting this vid :)

  • Who was she dating when she died?

  • i think marvin gaye. it was rumoured they had a thing going on and wen he found out she died he was heartbroken

  • I don't quite remember his name but she was dating someone for a while up north and got engaged to him before she died . But Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell claimed that their relationship was strictly platonic.

  • @dadecOuntyelmO The Unsung Documentary spoke of a Dr. Ernest Garrett who was her fiance during her illness. He was interviewed.

  • Tammi had a thing for M.Gaye

  • her voice is so sweet and calming

  • REACT

    Pen is position opinion

  • I LoVe U Tammi

  • Tammy was such a beautiful woman after all these years it still hurts..I think she was 23-24 when she died...Yet she lives on....................RIP

  • LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!! Thank you SO much!

  • WoW, Tammy Terrell and

Stevie......It's like BBKing (PetMilk) and Bobby Bland (Karo Syrup) Ask your Great Grands!

  • i looooooooooooooove this so much!!!i listen to this all day long:)

Cause all i do is thinking about you;)

  • i have aways loved stevies but but i think tammi is as good (just a different feeling) x

  • @poledeeks u said it just right

  • aint that the turth most of my songs i make r soul samples and the music is just great....from that time

  • She's still in my heart after all these years. This is the first time I've ever heard her sing this song and to know she co-wrote it makes it even better.

  • i always thought Stevie wrote this song for someone else back in the day, my first time hearing the original version, thanks for posting

  • One of my favorite song ,i really love the beat and to Tammi had it 1st and did a Wonderful, that's just great news.

  • just came from my mates wedding where they played this for there first dance(the tammi version) i nearly fuckin cried...lol....im such a big fan of tammi terrell...i wish she and marvin were still around to teach these retards these days about soul filled music.

    ps

    im only 23...lol.

  • @kajjagoogoo I feel the same way. I'm also 23. :-)

  • @kajjagoogoo VERY well put, my friend. She was simply incredible on so many levels. So sad is our loss of her and Marvin. The best duet EVER. Someone said so eloquently, "today's artist have no CLUE, none at all."

  • @kajjagoogoo

    Age 23

    A young Blood with taste

Pure music when the content was more important than empty bling true what folks say the God sure die young

thank God for Itunes and Youtube.

  • @kajjagoogoo

well said mate ! You have the same sentiments as me........I've always been a white soulboy and ps I'm 51 ! lol

  • RICHARD PEGUE (of Chicago radio fame) was a friend of mine... Sometimes he'd allow me to sit in the studio with him in his old days at WGCI & WVON on saturday nights from 12midnight til 6am... He is 'THE MAJOR' reason why i love dusties (oldies) so much!!! May GOD rest his soul.

  • ...and, another thing... I heard BRENDA HOLLOWAY's version, too... She was hot!!! But, i love me some TAMMI TERRELL....can't wait to meet her in Heaven one of these days (hopefully not too soon tho').

  • This was/is one of my favorite STEVIE WONDER jamms.... Didn't know my favorite Motown-female singer (Tammi Terrell) did it first, & Stevie wrote it fir her...'til recently! I heard it played by Richard Peguee' (a 'dusty/oldies' record dj here in Chicago), & now I'm hooked on Tammi's version, too!

  • I just bought "A Cellarful Of Motown" and listened to this version and had NO IDEA Tammi cut it first. I love it!!

You speak of Richard Pegue (RIP),I was born and raised in Chicago and came up listening to Richard waay back when he was on WGCI on Sat. nights. I credit him as well as my Mom and Pops (RIP) for all I know concerning true classic music.

  • yeah her versions great, slower but quite haunting

  • I've posted Brenda Holloway singing this song using the same backing track as Tammi's version...Both were recorded in 1966. See the video response with the picture of Brenda above....

  • this is my all time favorite ever!1 thanks!! :)

  • well Stevie recorded his version in 1980 not 1970

  • actually it was the spring of 77 he started but didn't release till 1980. He's also reworked it as a little uptempo ditty but that's unreleased

  • Don't forget the excellent Brenda Holloway version :-)

  • It posted on a vode above. It is great!

  • I love this Arrangement --Very Sexy-- ! Just as Hotter than July -- IS!!! Tammi-- was special.

  • It's amazing how it depends on who sings a song to make it a hit.

  • Another little gem. Wonder why it took (stevie) him so long to cover it himself.....

  • a tribute to her death

  • wow!! live and learn, did not know she sang this song before Stevie Winder !!!

    Maria

  • wat an amazing era of music..so many legends working together at once..happy birthday today Michael RIP &tammi too..

  • yes death in 1970

  • "After her untimely death in 170"?

  • Thanks for the typo. Thank goodness some people read this stuff.

  • @gchaed thank you for this video. i love how you transitioned to stevie's version. i love all three

  • Some credits also include Walter Willams. But for some reason, not all credits

  • MJ was on Stevie's version. The 3 background singers are Betty Wright, Eddie Levert and MJ. You can hear and distinguish each of their voices. Especially if you are familiar with R&B music and their work.

  • Thanks for the comment. I listened closely and I swear I think I hear MJ! Man, you're good.

  • Wow! Never new Tammi Terrell sang it first..Stevie is a genius...I loved how he changed it up.This is my favorite song of all time...

  • Stevie has always been the best, even at 16...

  • Michael was on Stevie's version not Tammi's. The words to this song are tight. If you were ever in love you can relate and if you cant, I hope you will.

  • my favorite tammi terrell record she was adorable, the early motown stars were just incredible, in a league of there own.

  • summer of 69 summer camp in Wisconsin and first time I danced with a girl besides my mot5her, sister or cousin and the son: 'Your'e all I need to get by' by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell Tammi, Marvin and that song are forever in my memory and my heart.

  • omg i hear mj..luv u mj.rip &tammi 2

  • while listening to the steve harvey show levert was talking about how him and michael were the back ground for him

  • STEVIE WONDER: He wrote this when he was 15, according to Stevie.

  • I know this was mentioned before but you can definetely hear Michael Jackson in the backgrounds, along with R&B singer Betty Wright and Eddie Levert of the O'Jays. MJ comes through loud and clear!

  • Michale Jacksons not on this track!!! come on now, you're hearing things!

  • Yes he is. You can look it up on the "Hotter Than July" album.

  • Comment removed

  • Do you mean Eddie Levert? Otherwise, I agree with MJ contributing to the chorus and the "breakdown" section of the song. You could clearly hear him singing.

  • For the life of me, I could never get those two Levert's straight!-lol I have been doing that for years. Thanks for the correction. But yes, Mike's voice is as clear as day.

  • Michael Jackson wasn't even with Motown back in 1966... The Jackson 5 didn't sign with Motown till '69.

  • stevie is more than a musician, he's a musical instrument

  • Dunno if everybody knows this but Michael Jackson, Eddie Levert and Betty Wright sing background vocals and you can really here it if you listen. I thought that was pretty cool. can you imagine micheal jackson doing your background vocals? insane!!

  • Yup. That''s an all star cast of singers there. Sure, it was a hit, but this song should've dominated the charts.

  • I sure did know that! And you definetely can tell the difference if you listen to each one. RIP MJ!

  • @tiggie4342

I didn't know that. Man, that is just wonderful!!!! Alll that talent on 1 song ..... priceless!

  • One of my fave motown tracks ... Tammi Terrells voice is awesome ... Ktf...

  • Great . Stevie is the other King of pop.

  • i agree

  • I've never heard of Tammi Terrell, sound like should could have made it big.

It's amazing Stevie wrote that song we he was 16. How many people have that musical maturity and innovation at 16? none?

  • Oh my Epi! She DID make it big. She sang with Marvin Gaye on all of his biggest hits!

  • Tammi DID make it big. If you've heard "Ain't No Mountain", or "You're All I Need to Get By" or many other Marvin Gaye duets you've heard Tammi's work. She was widely regarded as beautiful and talented. If you mention Marvin , many people will think of Tammi.

  • Thanks for the comments. "Ain't No Mountain" is a great track, I always thought it was Dianna Ross (who also has her own version). The internet humbling at times, you think you are across things but end-up finding embarrassing holes. Yes, she was both beautiful and talented.

  • There is no comparison. Although Tammi's version is nice and all......Stevie's MURDERS her version hands down! There is no contest. You Go Stevie!!! LOL!

  • I think you missed the point of this video

  • i agree, lol

  • i agree

  • @DetroitD60 I beg to differ....Tammi's version is beautifully haunting. Stevie's version is too commercial

  • I am going to see this man live on 6/24 here in ATL and I cannot wait! Stevie deserves to live forever just for penning Songs in the Key of Life

  • Stevie's version jumps right off the vinyl at you!

  • She was beutiful

  • tami was verry talented..wish she could of lived on

  • no it was james brown who beat tami and put the tumor in her head

  • ummmmmmmm u mean David Ruffin.

  • When Tammi was a teenager she dated James Brown and actually both James Brown and David Ruffin beat her. According to Tammi's sister, Ludie, Tammi was viciously raped by 3 boys when she a kid. Maybe psychologically that's why she kept seeking out abusive relationships. Poor Tammi suffered a lot in her short life.

  • there is an aggression brought to this song by Stevie that is great.

  • David ruffin hit her in the head with a hammer and caused her brain tumor witch led to her death months later,,,R.I.P. Tammie N Marvin

  • @cripgurl19 WOW REALLY where did u find that at.....i know ruffin was an ass people kept sayin james brown....he was a jerk yeah but a hammer...wow where did u find that

  • Yea they both abused her but david ruffin I think I went on yahoo and type her life and death and thats where I found it and marvin gaye talked about ruffin and brown abusin her

  • @cripgurl19 WOW...WHAT THE HELL WRONG WITH THESE DUDES....NOW I SEE WHY KIDS BE ACTIN OUT PEOPLE BEFORE ALOT OF US GOT HERE DIDN'T DO THERE DAMN JOB...DAMN MAN A HAMMER....SHIIIIDDDDT

  • Yea it is crazy,I just hate she let it go on 4 that long, rest her soul.

  • u make alot of great sense get out of all that cazyness its not worth it no matter the time

  • their was a little sample of how he treated her in the Temptations' movie. well you know how hollywood like the make a movie juicy, maybe it was true maybe not but if you have the Temptations movie you can see it at the Motown picnic.

  • u right i remember...he said to ole boy.....GO GET THAT BITCH...i remember...
