Hailee Steinfeld beat out 15,000 girls for this role.

So many audition tapes (many bad acting) on youtube for this part -- there must have been a huge buzz for the role of "Mattie Ross". Now if you really wanted to get this part, wouldn't you do some research and know you would have to do the audition with a southern accent? You would have NO CHANCE to get a call back not using an accent from the south. Whoever casted Hailee: (who I bet used a southern accent in her audition) KUDOS!

Cute girl, but it's a weak performance. She's trying to inject a bit of sass into what she's doing by spitting the lines out quickly and bobbing her head around a bit, but when if you simply close your eyes and listen to the words, they sound as though she's read and memorized them when they should sound as though she's thinking and speaking them.

I think they started out with open casting but I auditioned in chicago from my agent and its being sent to LA.. so i dunno what to tell ya
