My Dads favourite.he used to tell me that in the early fifties Joe used to go for a drink in a little country pub near our house, and he would sing the night away, good stuf,f god bless you dad.
This song allways reminds me of the pub as a kid,we used to play outside the piano room window, you know boys and girls no money just early teens and having a laugh, this song sticks in my mind as my uncle John used to sing it...lol,,,i could brag, hey listen to my uncle John,,god bless him, great man.
Lot's of 'scooping' lots of 'commercial' presentation. However, listen to the 'basic voice'....What a beautiful instrument. What if he had been taken under the wing of a brilliant opera tutor??...
now I know why my uncle sang it that way -he used to tell me about Josef Locke (about 40 year ago?) and now I appreciate it. Incidentally, my uncle sang it a bit like that!
when I was young and courting my wife back in the early 70's Joe was singing in the local club and I asked him to sing 'when you were sweet sixteen' for my girl friend, Joe said that he didn't do requests but when he saw her, he sang it for me. I am divorced now but still love her. Joe was a great singer and man.
My mother was the first in the street to have a gramaphone. She had a stack of Josef Locke records which she played whilst doing the housework. Neighbours would come and complain that they couldn't get his voice on the wireless and wouldn't leave when they realised it was a record. Memories indeed.
on way home to Newcastle from London with my mother (irish) many many years ago iam 57 now??????? JOSEPH was waiting for train and as usual he had quite a crowd round him then he started to sing i still love his voice to this day
