This man is a hero, and inspired by God. If only the venomous anti-gay "Christians" who demonize minorities would behave and think like he does. This man is more attuned to Christ's teachings than they will ever be.
As an east coast person, I never thought I would ever like Texas. I've visited Dallas and lived in a small town near Ft. Hood. I've been back and there are kind folks in Texas, including Joel...thank you Joel for letting us know.
God Bless you Mr Burns you are a credit to Fort Worth i whish i lived in your town because i would fight to get you re elected every time any man with as much campassion and courage as you obviously have gets my vote everytime and here s to a better tommarrow Peace and Love to you and yours
I love seeing good people like Joel. It will get better, but not without the education on the issue, and I think Joel did a great job telling people about this issue. And his story is so touching that I felt as if I was actually in the room listening, and was tempted to clap along with the others at the end.
I'm from Crowley. It definitely has gotten much better since he went to school there. We even had the first ever GSA at Crowley High School during my senior year. It is true that we faced some opposition however, the majority supported myself and my fellow LGBT community. He is right, it definitely does get better.
Thank you so much for you courage Mr. Burns. This video sparked a tremendous conversation with my teenage kids and I. I have great pride in their views on gays and the rights of others. I know I don't have to worry about how they treat others and it's because you helped me bring this to the table. Thank you so much.
To Mr. Joel Burns: Thank you so much for your courage and bravery. Your speech speaks more volumes than the ugly, hateful comments by so-called "politicians". You may have saved a lot of lives because of what you've done. Thank you!!
My son is gay (he recently married his partner in CA - happy day!) I grew up with some prejudice about homosexuality but with support from PFLAG I quickly adjusted as did our family. We all joyously attended their wedding. Strongly recommend your parents seek out PFLAG if they struggle with acceptance. I love you like a son for your strong character and let's call it what it is - for your bravery.
My mother used to be ashamed of me. She told me right to my face that they are going to kick me out of this town just like they did Billie. I am bisexual transgender and even though there is so much pain in my heart, I do believe things will get better. Thankfully, I wasn't bullied when I was younger because I could hold my own. And I didn't really stand out as such but everyone sorta knew anyway. this guy has what it takes to change the world.
@mindspring57 : Parents often will not get involved because some are ashamed, believe their homosexual child is just going through a phase. It's capitalism at it's finest, we live in a society where majority rules. I spent many years in school being harassed for being gay, BEFORE I EVEN KNEW I was a homosexual. I had mannerisms that I was unaware of because I was interested in girls, and dating girls all through middle and high school - But I did not believe I was gay myself yet. Denial sucks
How can this situation possibly exist? Where are the child's parents? Aren't they able to know what is happening, and take action, before it reaches the point of suicide? Someone please explain. Thanks.
Your oppression, your words are contributing to the high suicide rate among gay youth. If you are not helping to end this our blood is on your hands. If you are not apart of the solution you are apart of the problem. The reality is gay youth are killing themselves or being killed and/or attacked. Fight to help us. We are winning but we can speed the victory up!

A deeply thoughtful man. Decent and compassionate.
Sadly, the rednecks will likely vote him out next month "cuz he's a fag enabler and God hates fags".
