Her acting is over-the-top; her histrionics paint the picture of a spineless and dithering ruler. I think John Alexander's Essex has poise makes complete sense with the thrust of the plot / in trying to analyze his relationship with Elizabeth.
@raigekimaru She held nothing back when she was acting, and she admitted it played a part in her voice not lasting as long as it might have; but how wonderful she was. I was fortunate enough to see her twice, in Traviata and Lucia.
