Is "Poi" called such as it's so utterly pointless and boring. The worst is when you see idiots trying it in clubs on dancefloors, getting in everybody's way. Anybody even THINKING about starting this - find something better with your time.
I am VERY new to Poi and haven't even used fire yet but I do spin them unlit (mainly because of where I live) but this is a very helpful video because my friend stuff is clunky and harder for me to use.
WOW! I've always wanted to know :D So its great to find out finally. I was expecting magickal unicorn hair wicks that make the spinning so awesome but it turns out, your simply an amazing spinner :P
I had a question though, It looks as if you keep your chains a little on the long side. Optical illusion? Or an actual fact with reasoning behind it? Please explain if so.
Off to Home of Poi (my mothership) to trick out my own fire poi now :D
Hey nick I've been following you for a few weeks now, finally made (using your advice) my first pair of poi two days ago. I don't really have much experience with this kind of thing, but by trade I'm a welder, and have access to all sorts of fun stuff all the time, if you'd like I can try make you the chain the way you like, I can't promise it'll be good, but I can send it to you as a token of my appreciation for the immense inspiration you've been to me. Either way thanks a ton!
i love them - my fire poi keep going out - any tips??? i soak them in parrafin before and after use could it just be that i am using cheeper heads? where are yours available from? does play poi stock them? :)
i use kerosene its a cheaper better way to go dont pre soak just before you spin pour some kerosene on top of your poi swish the poi around in what ever container your using making sure to get the entire surface of the poi then spin them off then light and have fun
you can, but not with the intensity and as long lasting as his are, if you dont have the swivel, the chain twists up an itll stop the orbital automatically once the tension builds up too high
Yes, the Kevlar Guards help for sure, but not entirely. It just means the red-hot metal doesn't touch you, but you can get burned by the kevlar and fire of course, especially half-way through a burn, and also especially if you're using a fuel that burns not. If you really want your wrists to be safe, it's best to wear gloves or some kind of wrist-cuff.
@scerrick All you have to do is buy a short length of a wide kevlar tape (and thread) and you can make them on your own pretty cheap :) HOP sells kevlar
I've always wondered about doing wraps with fire poi. The worst burn I'd ever got from fire poi was not so much from the burning wick, but from the metal hardware attaching the chain to the wick. That stuff gets so hot after sitting under the flame for as long as it does, especially if i do multiple burns in a short time frame.
Does the "kevlar condom" really help all that much? and also any tips for avoiding burns on your arms, I've been a bit obsessed with inswings and inversions as of late.
i love doing the spirals also its one of my favs =] along with in versions and wut i do is just get some soft socks and cut them at about the ankle and wear them on my wrist/hands and that helps alot. =]
I got that chain from a friend. I'm not sure where to buy it commercially. I actually hope to go to Hong Kong to find a source for good, strong, but light chain, and then I'll try to get my favorite shops to sell it.
@meenik my friend made his from a dog chain, get a long enough one that you can cut in two, wouldnt advise poi-ing with chiwawa's lol, but they are pretty strong
What size is that oval link chain? I have been searching for lighter, thinner oval link chain (i have the chain HoP supplies but its to heavy/bulky) and from what i can see the chain you are using is lighter/thinner than the HoP version?
Does anyone have some advice where to get such oval link chain i would be greatful, ive been searching the net for a shop that supplies thinner chains but until now i have been unsuccessful :(
woot! yay new vids! nom nom nom im eatin em up. lol. i realllly need 2 get new fire poi, im so jealous of yours nick :] i think im going 2 have a "make really nice fire poi" day.
but hey guys check out a few of my vids, im not 2 great but it kidna sucks not having my vids show in video searches.
I love that oval (twist) link chain! I actually cut mine just past where I would wrap it around my hand to make it shorter for inside moves and welded one of those swivels in there. There is no extra bits to add bulk and a swivel right where I need it.
Nick!! ur back from the wilderness! have been waiting with baited breath for your next vid! hope all is well with you, easy journies brother and thanks for all your insparation!
i love you nik but id reeeeeally like to see a more artistic video next...not that i dont enjoy watching these vids they help me learn different things, its just i wanna see you have some real fun like with using light n really show us what you can do...(even tho i know what you can do)
If you found a person who could silver soldier you could probably have them split the last link of the chain and link that to the swivle, then they could solider the link back together with hard soldier...
If it was stress tested I can't imagine it ever failing in use, and the chain would have to be red hot before the soldier melted.
I am curious, why would you want the swivel welded to the chain? I'd prefer to be able to remove them for customisation. Cool poi though, very different to what I use, I'm surprised you don't prefer ball-chain, that is quick-cooling, acts as a swivel the whole way down (allowing you to do orbitals with shortened poi) and doesn't have links that pinch the skin during wraps. I agree with the nastiness of D or circular split rings, they're kinda chunky (although convenience for quick changes).
Do you not find the ball chains a bit painful on the hands when doing orbitals? Although I do agree, they are perfect for orbitals and allow you to easily move your body around them. Ive never tried oval link chains but might give them a go combined with swivels..
Because the split rings or quick links always add bulk, which get in the way and I find it's uncomfortable when doing spiral wraps and some other moves. With pure string, you can wind beautifully around your fingers for spiral wraps, but you can't do that on fire poi when there are attachment pieces. I would still be happy to have a quick link at the very bottom, to switch off the heads though.
Yeah, true, I share your love of spiral wraps and all wraps for that matter. I can only think of a couple of instances where I've wanted to change the heads anyway, usually I just have a few different sets of poi. All the best.
