there are lots of ways. but if u start with a strong solid coog running engine do this.
-remove EVERYTHING you wont need anymore to reduce wheight.
-remove the stock engine and tranny pulleys. get a 2 inch for the tranny and a 4-6 inch for the front. strait pipe ur exuast. give it a tune up. get a high quality belt
My neighbor "upgraded" his John Deer and man if you put that som bitch in 4th gear and just take your foot off the clucth instead of letting off gently your going for a wheelie.I got put on my ass from that thang.
lol i put a smaller pully on the transmission of my old john Deere 56 tractor it went pretty quick but man was it tippy. i wanted to enter a race but there are none in canada that i know of
There are some rear-engine units, but they don't make very good racers because of weight transfer and stability issues. I have a rear engine Murray that has a Peerless Transmission, if yours is similar I would advise against modifying it. The transmission is good for a front-engine racer. You need a large pulley on the engine and a small one on the transmission. Look at Tractor Supply or a farm store. Do a little googling and you will find lots of info on building a racer.
talk to your local friendly lawnmower repair place, hardware store, etc and so on. If you live in an area without either, you can find some help on lmr forums and sites like letsmow and heymow... google will turn up a ton of stuff.
My advice though, ditch the rear engine, as somebody said their weight distro SUCKS, just find a guy who will trade for a front engine, that way you have tons more room to play with your transmission ;-)
A couple of problems that come to mind with the rear-engine mowers: The weight distro of course, they are smaller than most front-engine mowers, and they are lighter and more cheaply built. You want some weight on the steer axle and a rear-engine just doesn't have much. The forums are great on the net.
you would think they would get dizy on such a little circle, but Im willing to bet these Nascar wannabee redknecks aint really bothered much by such things. I like the organized exit, I am surprised the breeder and her tax deduction in the beginning are lucky they didnt get mowed over, no pun intended..
The tracks are not as small as they look. I do get dizzy sometimes, but it is usually from the heat and breathing in exhaust and dust. The breeder and tax-deduction are actually both tax deductions and they were well away from the track. It's a little difficult to tell from the video.
These vehicles are not designed to travel faster than a few miles per hour. Without significant suspension modifications, and considering weight transfer at high speeds, you can very easily flip over in a turn. I've seen it happen several times. And yes, it can kill you. Imagine a 400 lb lawn mower rolling over the top of you while you are skidding in the dirt at 30 mph. It is easy to break you back or neck. We all wear protective gear to avoid such annoyances, however.
They go between 25 and 35 mph on the circle tracks depending on the mower, but most will go much faster on an unobstructed straight-away. Mine will do about 50 mph in such a way.
All of our tracks are different, yet most are oval. Some have doglegs. It may be boring to watch, but believe me, it is not boring to do. The tracks are not banked, you have to avoid rocks, bumps, and other mowers. You can't tell, but many mowers go around the turn on two wheels... not boring at all!
I think i can help, i'm no mower racer, but i know how to tinker with briggs engines. 1) Screw gasoline, nitromethane (drag fuel) offers much better power, 2) get the engine a port polish, this willl allow more fuel and air into the cylinder (removes the ridges from the machining of the block).
3) give it lighter pistons. 4) Like another guy said, swap the pulleys so you can have equal power and speed.
The really neat thing about mower racing is that it is not that expensive unless you want it to be. You can have a racer ready to go for just a few hundred bucks. You can also go crazy like some people do, but must of us keep it simple. Why mowers you ask? Why not? It's something different, it gets a lot of attention, and it is just plain fun. Many of us do other things like go-karts, circle track modifieds, demo derby, etc. It's just something different.
And most people have mowers. You also get a snece of achievment when you make something meant to travel at 5mph along a lawn to go 40+ round a race track.
You can fairly easily build and install a jet engine on just about anything down to a skateboard. Ever watched Junkyard Wars? Supposing you knew that, I can tell you that we are limited to single or twin cylinder standard internal combustion engines up to 20 horsepower.
The engines in these mowers are the same Briggs engines that they come with. They're just modified, usually with a hotter cam and a boreXstroke job. They also have better intakes and exhausts, hence the odd exhaust note. They're acually quite fun to ride. They'll ride wheelies with ease and the ones in this vid are probably good for 30MPH flatout. Some highly modded mowers, who's engines are worth as much as your car, can acually go 80 or 90.
These mowers are limited to external mods only-carbs and exhaust but no strokers or superchargers. They won't do wheelies, but they will do doughnuts. They are top-heavy and open-wheeled, so they are a bit dangerous. These will go about 30mph depending on the track and around 50mph tops in high gear on a clear straightaway.
This particular group is the "twin mods". They have standard Briggs, Tecumseh, Kohler etc. twin cylinder engines with a max factory rating of 20hp. Engine mods are limited to the carb. No internal mods allowed. Some use walk-behind transmissions and others use standard transaxles. All have "switched" pullys for higher speed over low-end torque.
Well, that depends. Depending on the setup, you can reach around 60 mph on level ground. However, during a race you have to slow for the turns and the tracks are usually small. Combine that with no suspension damping and rough tracks, speeds are usually between 20 and 40 mph during a race.
haha this is pretty cool but the track sucks, im currently working on my own mower puting in a 1.8L toyota 4cyl engine, should do like 120 when im done with it lol not like ima go that fast on it i just want it to be cool, but w/e kool vid man.
This track is actually in much better shape than most. Usually we race on fairground tracks and rodeo arenas.
Not sure what putting a car engine in or on a mower would accomplish except get you hurt. I do see a bunch of garden tractor-pullers with Geo Metro engines on them. Just be careful and have fun, nothing's worth a spinal chord injury.
Build a bigger track next year, itll be funner at higher speeds! LOL! we have kinda a kidney bean shape to our, that little curve in the back straight makes a lot of diference!
Of course they don't. This is only a small number of people. That is a statistical fact that doesn't really require explanation to anyone viewing this.
It sounds to me, though, that you have some bigoted view of people of different cultures. Rednecks we may be, but what are you? Don't be a snob.
Sadly, there are people out there who DO think this represents all Kansans, redneck or not, so sometimes an explanation IS required for such ignorance. I'm a Kansas native and I've met many people from other parts of the U.S. who think that all Kansans live on farms and get around on horses, until I have to explain to them that Kansas is multi-cultural. Marlastewart's comment was directed to those who harbor that mentality. Don't be so defensive.
I appreciate your comment, but I don't agree with the assessment. If this person was truly interested in conveying his feelings about the cultural diversity of Kansas, he should have been much more clear to that point.
What is clear here is this person doesn't appreciate being associated with other cultural groups. This is fine and dandy, but I did not post this video for people to voice their discomfort of others.
no, i just wanted to point out that everyone from Kansas aren't into racing on lawnmowers (wasting gas)...just as I point out every person from my neighborhood aren't poor, uneducated & unmotivated, just as I point out that every politician is not just saying anything to get your vote, just as I point out that every person that races lawnmowers are NOT rednecks.
I'm not knocking anyone's past time...have fun & be safe! :)
I'm glad to see that we've both relaxed on this point.
I definitely understand the stigma of a sport like this, but I look beyond such things and just have fun.
I'm happy that I've had the ability to get a good education and rise above the ignorance and poverty that plagues so many, but we must always be mindful of those less fortunate.
There are still a few races left this year. In fact, I am finishing up my own for the single cylinder class. The next race is at the Wyandotte County Fair on August 2nd at 7PM. You can find more info and race schedule at the website http://www.mwlmra.com/
I just watched your video. I think it would be perfect for our new show. Do you own the video? If you do, we would need a hard copy to use it. We PAY for every video that we use. If your interested, send us an email to tvideos10@yahoo.com
