the pick ups can only be out of phase with each other, if one pick up is off, than no matter where the other pick up selector is, there is nothing for it to be out of phase with... for example: if the bridge pick up is off it doesn't matter what on position the neck is in, its the same sound either way.
@michaeltullo yeah I figured this out later, I should put some comments in the video to disregard my whole explanation. Those damn sliders can be confusing as hell.
@1995nothingtodo let's see, including acoustics and one bass, I have a total of 9. My favorite is prob. my Road Worn Strat, but I'm still searching for my perfect guitar.
@tingly7654321 thanks a lot TROLL. Do yourself a favor and keep it moving unless you have something positive to say, your channel comments say it all bro.
@tingly7654321 well you coulda just asked me that! I honestly think it's 10 X better without stickers and have since peeled and heated them off slowly so it's got the original paint job. It's that middle school punk thing that most kids like to do and of course I ended up regretting it, but it looked cool at the time. Plus, I wasn't going for Kurt's look per-say. He actually stickered the crap out of many of his Strats, just not the Mustang.
How much are these worth? I found a left handed version but it seems expensive at $1200, especially for a made in japan. Being lefty, we are super limited though and never get this shape.
@Inverted314 they are totally worth more now because of Cobain having passed away and also that he used them so much. The Japanese models specifically were the ones he preferred over any vintage American stuff. So that's why you see the price where it is. Is it worth it for a glorified student guitar, I don't know, but it sure is one of the coolest looking guitars ever. Watch ebay.
Is this guitar suited for more bluesy playing (John mayer, SRV, that kind of songs)? Recently fender released the same guitars except as a kurt cobain version (practically the same except for some other humbuckers I think) and I can only buy one guitar and as such I would like an allround guitar that can play both (indie)rock and blues stuff. It sucks to be lefthanded but I'm glad this guitar is now available!
@WarlikeSRK hey honestly the new Kurt Cobain lefty's are freakin' awesome guitars. I'd get one in a heartbeat, they have all the preferable mods already done for you. Quiet honestly, any guitar could be a blues guitar, it's all in how YOU use it. I've played blues on a Mustang before and it sounds good, Johnny Winter started out on one from what I know.
The pickups can only be out of phase when the are both on together. The two positions by themselves are just on unless you added something. If the wiring is stock, when the switches are both on in opposite directions it's out of phase and in the same direction in phase. My '69 Competition Mustang has the same pickups yours does and it's wired backwards from standard.
How did you replace the stock with the lace sensor? I'm a complete noob to replacing the hardware stuff. This sounds amazing, I want to do it for my 69 RI.
@NipponSukiDaYo it's pretty easy, take all the strings off, take some pictures once you take the pickguard off and turn it over in case you forget where the wires go and just unsolder the lead on the volume and tone pots plus the pickup selectors. You'll need a soldering iron to do this, so if you don't have one you'll just have to have someone install it for you. Fender also lists wiring diagrams for all their guitars online if you need that. Hope that helps!
@lesDKP hey there, well for Nirvana this is THE guitar haha but for Metallica not so much. I mean, truly, you can play any guitar for any music, but some are meant for certain styles more than others. I don't find it very easy to solo on a Mustang, the way the strings fall over the fretboard isn't suited for ripping like Kirk Hammett. It can be a soulful, bluesy guitar as well as an indie, alternative rock monster. Put a humbucker in the bridge and I'd say you'd be set.
@ia5662 Thank's a LOT for your answer ! I want this guitar to play songs like Nirvana and some alternative rock with a friend , he has a guitar with EMG and we want to be " different " ^^. Yeah if I buy this guitar , I think i'll put a humbucker but it will be very expensive. Because this guitar cost something like 600 euros in occasion...
@MrUndergrunge that's cool, ever since I had seen Lace Sensors I thought they were the perfect fit for the Mustang because they don't ruin the aesthetic at all and sound a lot better than the stock pickups. Although the stock pickups have their own kind of charm, very jangly and bright, but I want FAT in mine so the Lace Sensor does the job.
@ia5662 exactly, the lace are perfect because keep the aesthetic of the guitar but more powerfull with more presence in mine i replace the pots for CTS 500K and orage drop cap and oooh my gosh is a "killer tone" hehe sold me you mustang i love that color and the crack on the paint looks so sexy hehe
@MrUndergrunge trust me there's plenty of bass there, the video camera doesn't pick that up and I don't have a condenser mic to put in front of the speaker. This video is just a rough idea of the tone
@door3x ah I see, I'd honestly just buy a white pickguard man! would probably cost about the same, plus you can with aged white, pure white, mint greenish white or mother of pearl. lots of options
@door3x I assume you mean sanding the body down and NOT the pickguard right? but yeah, painting a body is no prob, sanding it is a great idea. you'll have to remove all the electronics first though and if you're sanding it I'd take the neck off too. The bridge has to come off, pretty much everything before you can sand it and paint it.
@door3x OK well I guess I should mention that whenever you take all the strings off a tremolo equipped guitar it can knock the intonation out a bit. For example, anymore, I always make sure to replace one string at a time to keep my intontation as close to the original as possible. Theoretically, you could actually just loosen the strings and still take off the pickguard, it'll just slide out under the strings, but the pickups will still be attached, so you'll have to unscrew them from the guard
@MrBavelaar still think a Strat is the best all-around option, you can drop a humbucker in the bridge or buy one with a bridge hum to get the grungy distortion sounds and use the single coils for the indie stuff, plus the neck pickup for blues. 5 positions offer a few more options, but a Jag would be my second choice. Then new Jazzmasters in the Blacktop series would be great too, a mix of single coils and humbuckers. Remember, any guitar can do all those styles, its your preference though.
@weinerland69 hey man they are your hands and will sound pretty much the same on a variety of guitars, so I'd say try it out with the styles of music you like to play. your tone will mostly be in your hands and the amp settings, but this guitar in my opinion really suits indie rock, alternative and grunge styles.
Hey, I Love this guitar, It's very sad to say that almost everything in my country is expensive and hard to find. Btw, I've got the same Mini-Stereo you have on the background.
@godwhyisthistaken it's just in the pickup to transmit the vibration of the strings to the amp. works exactly like a normal pickup would but without the common noise of a single coil.
@94cona not at all, I think it would be easier to play with larger hands. I have average to slightly larger hands and although open chords are certainly much tighter, it's very easy to play. I just like have jumbo frets and a wider fret spacing. i'd recommend trying one first before buying of course, as with any guitar you'd consider.
Hey great demo. I was wondering if you could help me. I'm trying to decide between the mustang or jaguar. I mostly play nirvana, the beatles, weezer, marilyn manson and other heavy stuff so I basically play with distortion on as much as I play clean. Thanks.
@RLK94 Well to my ears the Jaguar has more sustain, maybe because of the different bridge. However, if you load a humbucker into any guitar it's gonna sound pretty huge. If you like Weezer and Nirvana, I'd go with a Mustang. I used to play a TON of Weezer on my Mustang when I first got it. I was in 8th grade and it was the perfect guitar for that stuff. Try both guitars if you can and see which suits your playing style best.
@fanofthemusic1090 my take on it is this: a digital chorus sounds a little more "icy" and sterile. Some people enjoy that tone. I myself like the warmth of analog. It always adds more "lush-ness" to your tone and certainly is warmer, like tape recording vs. a digital recording. This is why many tone crazy players go after analog effects and tube amps. They crave that warmth and fullness in the sound. I'd try a few side by side and see what you think. Analog usually costs more FYI.
@DylanCooperMusic no idea brotha, keep looking in pawn shops, it's that type of guitar that would be floating around in one. The funny thing is, up until the 2000's these things were being sold a ton on Musician's Friend and AMS. You'd think there would be more, but eBay is honestly your best bet, maybe Craigslist.
@Fiddstx exactly, knocks it out of tune every time when you dive on it. You might get away with a few subtle bends, but nothing deep. Still love the look of it, but the bridge of the guitar is it's weakness. It's extremely hard to get intonation and string height right while the strings are tight, you have to take out the entire bridge unit to adjust these things. That's why Kurt Cobain replaced his Mustang bridges with a Gibson Tune-O-Matic style ones.
Heh, "don't go diving on the tremolo because it sucks." I get that same feeling. My buddy's got the same model, MIJ, for sale, sittin here in my house as I borrow it for evaluation. 350 bucks, should I do it? It has a couple of small nicks.
@Wodey25 haha yeah, it's just not the most effective trem unit, but it's a decent bridge I guess. It certainly looks cool as hell and gives the guitar a retro vibe. I would absolutely get it, shoot I'd almost pay that for the body so I could replace mine! Did you happen to see all those cracks in the video? It's depressing that the MIJ Sonic Blue bodies are so rare, I can never find them.
@plxplxkthx I actually just bought it from him two days ago for 300 bucks. Best guitar deal I've ever done. The thing is worth about triple what I paid!
@TEAMUNICORNRECORDS haha yeah I wish dude! I'd totally endorse Fender or some Channel Islands boards. Heck, I'd ride the board while playing a Fender, that would make a sick ad. But really, my skills don't justify a sponsorship, at least I don't think so.
K, I'm getting annoying now, but on a scale of 1-10, 10 being really solid and reliable and easy to play, 1 being totally cheeseball and high maintenance and crappy sounding, what score would your Mustang garner?
@fanofthemusic1090 I truly think it depends on style. Could you play metal on this? Sure, but it would not be advisable. Overall, I'd give this guitar an 8, it finds itself best in the alternative rock and indie rock genre's and really suits that style of music and takes effects very well. If that's what you play, consider it a 10. You can still play blues on it, in fact I heard before Johnny Winter started using Thunderbirds that he used a Stang in his early days. It is easy to play too.
I ask because I've found a few of these on Craigslist for close to $500, which is nuts compared to the retail. But these are really neat, cos they're made in Japan, and while the Squiers blow my mind with their quality, I don't like supporting sweatshop labor.
I also ask because I've gotten really mixed messages from people regarding poplar as a guitar wood.
But, yeah, yours sounds really kickass. If I ever get one, I'm putting a Red Lace Sensor in the bridge.
@fanofthemusic1090 yeah the poplar wood really sucks because the guitar is almost too light sometimes and it dents and gouges REALLY easily. It's way too soft a wood and should not have been used in guitar building, but whatever, maybe that's part of it's charm. Mine is now cracked to sh!t, I'd love to get a new body.
The Lace Sensor is a great choice because it matches cosmetically, so you can only really tell it's in there from close up. Otherwise it's a very discrete mod.
@fanofthemusic1090 I have an original 64' and i've also played the reissues. I found mine for 1k around 10 years ago. The reissues are no where near the sound of that 60's-70's real wood that has dried out over the years. On a scale of 1-10 i would give the reissue a 6 and the original an 11 it's very noticeable and because of the small scale of the guitar to start with you want that heavier wood to balance it out. I also own the Jaguar which is a reissue. Its the better of the two reissues.
Hey, I have that same guitar. Have you noticed that the strings are a bit closer together than other fender guitars (stratocaster)? Sorry if Iam not using the correct guitar terms, Iam a bit new to guitars haha. Nice playing btw.
@IScreamForiIceCream yeah the string spacing is a little different and it also has a different radius on the fretboard. This isn't the best guitar for fast lead playing and solos, but it can def. be done. It's just a little harder to coax that kind of stuff out of it. The strings are a bit closer, but not much. If anything, the frets may fool you. Those older Japanese Fenders have small frets with shorter spacing, that's why guys with small hands like Kurt Cobain loved them.
@ia5662 I see you know of shortscale guitars,so i m gonna ask you a question...is the difference between a strat and a mustang that big?I mean i have a strat, will it be uncomfortable for me to play with a mustang or it's ok?
@argydaf It is pretty different, but it still feels like Fender of course. Also, girls typically have smaller hands, so short scale is much easier to play for them. I see you are a girl, so checking down from a strat to a stang would probably make it even easier to play. I play both and the Mustang is very easy to play, although solos don't sound quite as good on it because the notes don't sustain as much. Some people like that though. Have fun with it!
@skull182 technically, it has to do with the string lengths and how stretched out they are. Plus, most of the short scale Fender models have much different bridge setups than a Strat's trem. The main difference I notice every time I play a short scale guitar is that the strings sustain much less than a standard scale guitar. They deaden quicker after you pluck them, but it gives it a very cool, hollow tone in my opinion. It's a unique tone like no other really.
@danu5656 wasn't using a small clone actually, it was a meistersinger from Jacques Pedals. It's got a little small clone circuitry in it though. Just keep the depth high and the rate medium-high. My amp volume was actually pretty low, shouldn't really affect the tone regardless of how loud the clean tone is. It's the distortion that is affected by volume more.
Dean Ween plays one of this! ^_^ I'm not entirely sure which year. He actually has two. I found an original American 69' Mustang for only $1,500!!! It was stripped of it's original finsih, but it look, felt, played, and sounded amazing! I would prefer an original over the reissuse. How much did this cost you?
dude, are you jon lajoie??? if not you fucking totally look like him!
and i love your guitar! i want to buy one like these one day... i just bought a 09' fender americain standard strat... so it's going to be a little while befor ei buy one... although if i had the cash right now, i would buy one that's on ebay just like yours, but that's more of a collectors, because kurt used the same on the mtv live & loud!
haha sorry man, i'm not jon lajoie my name is ian. glad you dug the review though, it's def. a sweet guitar. i got it so cheap in the 90s when i bought it, although the cracks in the back are affecting the sound now. I really need to get a new Sonic Blue body. the american strats are great too, i have one from 2002 in sky blue. good luck finding your stang!
oh.....you will knacker yer switches usin em as a killswitch, install a pushbutton inbetween yer vol and tone....requires one 7mm hole in teh control plate....simples, pahaha easiest mod to do, yah can get a switch at radioshack for next to no moeny at all too!
haha knacker eh? I rarely do that, but I wanted to show people that the Mustang is a funky and cool guitar that has those kind of quirky attributes. I think that's what sets it apart from a Duo-Sonic or Jaguar, aside form aesthetics of course.
Liked your red Stang in the vid, pretty cool pickup layout too.
I got one I got one.... now ait... I got a 65 one.... slab body type =]
original usa too despite a refinish! :(
Dont have teh stock tuners or pickups although replaced with half decent klustons and teh pickups are quarter pounder in the neck and SD hotrails in teh bridge! (check it out in ma vid - paranoid android, at the bottom of ma list)
Trying to get hold of a dually red lace sensor for ma frankentele!!!!!
Today I looked your vid - for shure, you give to other guitar players very helpfull informations!! I especially like to watch you play..it's amazing!! GREAT WORK!!

Try both guitars if you can and see which suits your playing style best.

that red label lace sensor seems to be the best sounding pickup in a mustang :) are they still in production?
jks2 1 year ago
@jks2 yes, but I don't think you can get them with a Fender logo anymore, they are just Lace Sensors.

What's the difference between a chorus pedal that's analog and a chorus pedal that's not analog?
fanofthemusic1090 1 year ago
@fanofthemusic1090 my take on it is this: a digital chorus sounds a little more "icy" and sterile. Some people enjoy that tone. I myself like the warmth of analog. It always adds more "lush-ness" to your tone and certainly is warmer, like tape recording vs. a digital recording. This is why many tone crazy players go after analog effects and tube amps. They crave that warmth and fullness in the sound. I'd try a few side by side and see what you think. Analog usually costs more FYI.

Craigslist.
fanofthemusic1090 1 year ago
@DylanCooperMusic no idea brotha, keep looking in pawn shops, it's that type of guitar that would be floating around in one. The funny thing is, up until the 2000's these things were being sold a ton on Musician's Friend and AMS. You'd think there would be more, but eBay is honestly your best bet, maybe Craigslist.

I really like the guitar, but I like using the tremolo. What exactly do you mean by it sucks? Like it knocks the guitar out of tune?
Fiddstx 1 year ago
@Fiddstx exactly, knocks it out of tune every time when you dive on it. You might get away with a few subtle bends, but nothing deep. Still love the look of it, but the bridge of the guitar is it's weakness. It's extremely hard to get intonation and string height right while the strings are tight, you have to take out the entire bridge unit to adjust these things. That's why Kurt Cobain replaced his Mustang bridges with a Gibson Tune-O-Matic style ones.
ia5662 1 year ago
Heh, "don't go diving on the tremolo because it sucks." I get that same feeling. My buddy's got the same model, MIJ, for sale, sittin here in my house as I borrow it for evaluation. 350 bucks, should I do it? It has a couple of small nicks.
Wodey25 1 year ago
@Wodey25 haha yeah, it's just not the most effective trem unit, but it's a decent bridge I guess. It certainly looks cool as hell and gives the guitar a retro vibe. I would absolutely get it, shoot I'd almost pay that for the body so I could replace mine! Did you happen to see all those cracks in the video? It's depressing that the MIJ Sonic Blue bodies are so rare, I can never find them.
ia5662 1 year ago
@Wodey25 shit, if he's still selling it and you're not buying it then could i buy it?

@plxplxkthx I actually just bought it from him two days ago for 300 bucks. Best guitar deal I've ever done. The thing is worth about triple what I paid!

bro, the next step is to wax that shit up and surf it, are you sponsored and shit?
TEAMUNICORNRECORDS 1 year ago
@TEAMUNICORNRECORDS haha yeah I wish dude! I'd totally endorse Fender or some Channel Islands boards. Heck, I'd ride the board while playing a Fender, that would make a sick ad. But really, my skills don't justify a sponsorship, at least I don't think so.

K, I'm getting annoying now, but on a scale of 1-10, 10 being really solid and reliable and easy to play, 1 being totally cheeseball and high maintenance and crappy sounding, what score would your Mustang garner?
fanofthemusic1090 1 year ago
@fanofthemusic1090 I truly think it depends on style. Could you play metal on this? Sure, but it would not be advisable. Overall, I'd give this guitar an 8, it finds itself best in the alternative rock and indie rock genre's and really suits that style of music and takes effects very well. If that's what you play, consider it a 10. You can still play blues on it, in fact I heard before Johnny Winter started using Thunderbirds that he used a Stang in his early days. It is easy to play too.
ia5662 1 year ago
@ia5662
If I ever get one, I'm putting a Red Lace Sensor in the bridge.
fanofthemusic1090 1 year ago
@fanofthemusic1090 yeah the poplar wood really sucks because the guitar is almost too light sometimes and it dents and gouges REALLY easily. It's way too soft a wood and should not have been used in guitar building, but whatever, maybe that's part of it's charm. Mine is now cracked to sh!t, I'd love to get a new body.
The Lace Sensor is a great choice because it matches cosmetically, so you can only really tell it's in there from close up. Otherwise it's a very discrete mod.
ia5662 1 year ago
@fanofthemusic1090 I have an original 64' and i've also played the reissues. I found mine for 1k around 10 years ago. The reissues are no where near the sound of that 60's-70's real wood that has dried out over the years. On a scale of 1-10 i would give the reissue a 6 and the original an 11 it's very noticeable and because of the small scale of the guitar to start with you want that heavier wood to balance it out. I also own the Jaguar which is a reissue. Its the better of the two reissues.
fenderjaguar1985 1 year ago
Hey, I have that same guitar. Have you noticed that the strings are a bit closer together than other fender guitars (stratocaster)? Sorry if Iam not using the correct guitar terms, Iam a bit new to guitars haha. Nice playing btw.
IScreamForiIceCream 1 year ago
@IScreamForiIceCream yeah the string spacing is a little different and it also has a different radius on the fretboard. This isn't the best guitar for fast lead playing and solos, but it can def. be done. It's just a little harder to coax that kind of stuff out of it. The strings are a bit closer, but not much. If anything, the frets may fool you. Those older Japanese Fenders have small frets with shorter spacing, that's why guys with small hands like Kurt Cobain loved them.
ia5662 1 year ago
@ia5662 Cool, thanks for replying. I love this guitar lol.

@ia5662 I see you know of shortscale guitars,so i m gonna ask you a question...is the difference between a strat and a mustang that big?I mean i have a strat, will it be uncomfortable for me to play with a mustang or it's ok?
argydaf 1 year ago
@argydaf It is pretty different, but it still feels like Fender of course. Also, girls typically have smaller hands, so short scale is much easier to play for them. I see you are a girl, so checking down from a strat to a stang would probably make it even easier to play. I play both and the Mustang is very easy to play, although solos don't sound quite as good on it because the notes don't sustain as much. Some people like that though. Have fun with it!
ia5662 1 year ago
@ia5662 Thaks for the response :) Btw great job on the video!
argydaf 1 year ago
what's the different about shortscale(mustang jaguar 24") and normal scale(Strat/tele25"5)?
skull182 1 year ago

How much did this cost you?

and i love your guitar! i want to buy one like these one day... i just bought a 09' fender americain standard strat... so it's going to be a little while befor ei buy one... although if i had the cash right now, i would buy one that's on ebay just like yours, but that's more of a collectors, because kurt used the same on the mtv live & loud!
you play good! that's awsome!
peace out
P.S. if your jon lajoie, please tell... lmao!

haha sorry man, i'm not jon lajoie my name is ian. glad you dug the review though, it's def. a sweet guitar. i got it so cheap in the 90s when i bought it, although the cracks in the back are affecting the sound now. I really need to get a new Sonic Blue body. the american strats are great too, i have one from 2002 in sky blue. good luck finding your stang!

Really enjoyed your demo!
hope to hear more

haha knacker eh? I rarely do that, but I wanted to show people that the Mustang is a funky and cool guitar that has those kind of quirky attributes. I think that's what sets it apart from a Duo-Sonic or Jaguar, aside form aesthetics of course.
Liked your red Stang in the vid, pretty cool pickup layout too.

original usa too despite a refinish! :(
Dont have teh stock tuners or pickups although replaced with half decent klustons and teh pickups are quarter pounder in the neck and SD hotrails in teh bridge! (check it out in ma vid - paranoid android, at the bottom of ma list)
