lemieux n gretz look like kids in a candy shop on the olympic team! did any other nation really think they had a chance against that team! when they were playing it always looked like team canada were toying with the rest of the world back then! even when we were down a goal or 2 hahaha! never hated two guys more (only because they werent canadiens) never smiled more when they were inducted though! they are two of the classiest guys. they are the last of their kind i love our NATIONAL PASTIME!!
1) Gretzky never won an Olympic medal, so I'd say the other nations had a chance.
2) The clips are from Canada Cup '87 and that "toying" stuff is absolute nonsense.
Canada had tough games against Czechoslovakia and Sweden. They went 2-1-1 against Soviets and never won them by more than one goal. The final series was really, really close and both teams were insanely good. If the referees weren't North American, who knows...
Classical soundtrack seems out of place, but it fits perfectly here. Lemieux was a moving work of art on the ice. There may not have been anyone with more pure talent to lace up a pair of skates. Can't say if he's the best ever, but a good argument certainly exists.
Jesus... comparing OV to Mario is blasphemy... Mario was one of the games single most dominating forces all-time... OV is good but is not in the same league as Mario. Marios game was complete.. he did it all.. OV is just a flashy goalscorer who all to often plays over the edge!
@rizon8 +1. Ovy is a banger who happens to score goals. Backstrom is a better overall player and Semin is more talented. Ovy is barley a top-30 play in this watered down league.
It's just wrong to say Lemieux and Ovechkin in the same sentence. Mario was above and beyond any other player, there never was, or will be, a player with his skill and finess.
@cujobo I know exactley what you're saying. But you're also wrong. Ovy might not have lemieux's style but he is just as good of a player. Lemieux is the greatest ever. Ovy will be great but never Magnificent
@Skaterkyle2008 Alex Voechkin scores his goals when his team is up 5-1. Mario scored all of his highlight reel goals with a minute to go in important games. Mario was the most beautiful player the world has ever seen. Ovechkin isn't even as good as Bure was.
At 47 years old right now Mario would have 140 pts in 60ish games.
the footage at 1:43 till 1:56 is the quarter final game before soviets in 87, lemieux scored tieing goal, and the winner in O.T..against an 18 yr old Domink Hasek. No one ever mentions that for the 87 series..lemieux won the game to get them to the final as well as the final itself...66 best ever
The man has saved the Pittsburgh Penguins twice. They would be in TN or who knows where, were it not for his efforts. The entire city owes a lot to #66. I just wish he hadn't gotten sick. Would love to have seen what he could do uninterrupted. Go Pens!
talent wise, he was probably better that wayne, but god damn, wayne is tha best player in the history of the sport. The great one was simply and purely the best. bobby orr was also an incredible talent.
You do realize that Mario missed like a total of 7 seasons over his career, right? It's said all the time but it's the truth..... If he was healthy there's a GREAT chance he would have broken Wayne's records. ....not to mention the junk teams Lemieux played for early in his career. Im happy that I've had the fortune of watching them both play though.
When I was 13(1993) I went to a Lemieux hockey camp that Lemieux's brother held in Harmar, Pa and I got to skate with Mario. it was unreal.
Mario ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

80% of the goals he scored here, in todays NHL, the refs would have called slashing/hooking about 4 times before he scored....amazing
