Higher pitches require higher tension on the vocal chords, and closed vowels in the upper register add more but unnecessary tension. In the battle between maintaining a beautiful singing tone and maintaining absolutely pure vowels for sake of textual clarity, any singer will go for beautiful tone first.
@principae122 - Sorry, but "Seraphic Flahms" is bad pronunciation. The native English speakers in this video have exemplary diction, but generally the English often sounds strange otherwise. It certainly ain't 17th century pronunciation, that's for sure!
