  • That guy is beast. Bet that sounded sick live in the front row (or wherever the sweet spot in the audience was).

  • Oh man, I must have listened to the United Nations CD a million times over the years, but actually seeing someone play two conch shells at the same time is...is... I don't even know what to say!

  • I blow the conch on special event in Hawaii. You are amazing!

  • WOW!!! 4:22!!! this is one GREAT tune!

  • esta bien chevere pero mejor es arturo sandoval ............. (mnsj enviado de PERU)

  • does anyone know where you can buy conches like that. i wanna learn how to play!!

  • carribean, i bought one from Nassau the other day.

  • the shells are like a human voices!

  • Dizzy was so cool. Even late in his life, when he pehaps spent too much time in gigs fooling with the congas and singing, he is the ultimate bebop trumpet genius. Only Clifford Brown stood anywhere near Dizzy.

    Miss Dizzy, indeed.

Steve Turre - a shape-shifting alien. What a conch player!

  • I lost my video tape with this recording, thanks to youtube for finding easy, now I am Happy, for this reason I find Steve Turre incredible together with the Band.

  • great stuff. What a lineup.

    Miss Dizzie.

  • This is Fucking Awesome !

  • is that jeff hamilton on drums?

  • it is airto moreira with percussion and drums, and the faboulos giovanni hidalgo with the congas.

  • Anyway, enough of the hotdogger, let's get back to Steve's vid. Is that "Macho" from Sanctified Shells or another descarga?

  • Can't we all just get along?

  • Oh, and...try getting your full chromatic scale out of a shell the size of a base ball or especially a beach ball. Anyway, we know yer just talking smack anyway.

  • The small shells play even more notes than the one I use. However, I just recently found a baseball sized shell i like, so I havent used it in vids yet.

  • What I find entertaining is that blacklungsjoe seems to think he's revolutionized shell playing by using two hands and getting more than 4 or 5 chromatic notes out of it. If you ask him, I'll wager money that Mr. Steve has his own set of reasons for not trying to milk every chromatic not out of ONE shell. I'll also wager money that he could if he wished to do so.

  • Dude, I did revolutionize shell playing using both hands. Steve didnt think to use two becuase he plays trombone. Playing over an octave, chromatically is revolutionary, look it up. No one has ever played that many fundamental pitches (no overtones) on a shell till this point in recorded history.

  • Actually I have 2 degrees from The Eastman School of Music, and have performed with Steve and countless other music legends.Did you?

  • Steve Turre is definately not a bullshit-er, you are obviously not a musician and never will be. Keep you're negative comments to yourself. Turre is one of the best we have. You go and try to get a gig. Good Luck

  • i think black lungsjoe and stokedindubc are the same person promoting themselves. you did not get a full ride music scholarship or else you wouldnt' talk like this on youtube.

  • @xleeca I totally promote myself, but not with the use of aliases. But yes i have friends who promote me too. anyway i think turre is great, but as an indiviual i disrespect him. I asked him for lessons years ago and he totally blew me off. I feel he attempts to monopolize conch playing by refusing to teach his competitors to do it. Him refusing to teach me is like a father refusing to tech his boy to throw a ball. i had to much obvious talent for him to shaft me the way he did.

  • @xleeca anyways, i'm older and more mature now. i'm acheiving what i want with the instrument and I'm gonna put the Turre bashing behind me. sorry to all those I've offended.

  • Dude, i am a professional piano player. Since I mostly play electric, I am extremley pitch sensitive. Our west chester shell player (blacklungsjoe), hits his notes with more pitch accuracy than Steve Turre could have wet dreams about.

  • Steve has done awesome things with the shell, but there are younger musicians who are way better than him. He gets all the hype, though. If you like this check out the dude who covers entire chili peppers songs on just one shell, he really makes Steve Turre look like a bull-shiter. this bad-ass new shell player's youtube username is blacklungsjoe, check him out!!

  • All due respect to "blacklungsjoe", admirable novelty interpretations isn't true understanding of music, improv, register, rhythm, texture, variation, harmony.

    This is a great vid!

  • Where on earth do you come from saying I don't play with an understanding of music, improv, harmony etc.? One can't play the conch shell without near perfect pitch and the ability to play many other instruments. Also my "novelty interprations prove that my chromatic range surpasses all other shell players. THat is why i play songs, becuase I am not limited to improvisation due to lack of enough notes. But, since you challenge me, I will add a jazz improv vid in the near future.

  • May I request you supply a couple: 'Donna Lee', and 'Lush life'. Would also like to hear a rendition of 'Night in Tunisia', complete with intro vamp and solo break. Looking forward! Contemporary commercial pop tunes are generally anti-intellectual simplistic over-marketed babble.
