From what Ive been able to find on this, he was referring to the deficit as of today -after his first month of spending. If you cut it in half today, it will still be greater than it was when he took office. I mean, greater than his inheritance.

I don't think anyone could realistically decrease the national debt significantly without raising taxes or cutting spending by a large degree, either of which would have the likely result of punishment at the polls.

Obama really don't have much to lose by promising a miracle, his entire campaign was based on miracles, one more couldn't hurt any more than it already will. Even if all the debts are internal, it will be a tall order to halve it with these spending, let alone external debts to countries that isn't even American allies.
Obama is going to need to kiss a lot of peope's behinds if he is to make this happen, bye bye superpower status.

Did anybody hear him talk tonight about cutting the national deficit in half by the end of his first term? From what Ive been able to find on this, he was referring to the deficit as of today -after his first month of spending. If you cut it in half today, it will still be greater than it was when he took office. I mean, greater than his inheritance.

People might be misled into equating "deficit" with "debt" by this kind of talk, but he was referring to Fiscal Year 2009, which includes a $1.3 trillion deficit inherited from the last months of the Bush administration (Oct.-Jan.).
I don't think anyone could realistically decrease the national debt significantly without raising taxes or cutting spending by a large degree, either of which would have the likely result of punishment at the polls.

What they dont tell you about is the additional future monies committed to new programs and policies within this bill (now a law), and the additional money which will be spent on it's interest. Sure, what can go wrong when we allow hundreds of thousands of people who have been described, "marinated" in a "sick death cult," who voted for Hamas, and 55% of whom support suicide bombings live here and at the American taxpayers' expense:

Few modern presidents have been greeted with such lofty expectations as Obama. That Obama now stands where Bush did eight years ago. Where did the HOPE and CHANGE go?

When the states reconcil the numbers of the 3/4's lost tax revenue from the price of a barrel going from 140 to 32 you'll see.
Trillions have disappeared under the fed and now the government is taking your own tax money and lending it back to you in the form of a check for labor you where already doing with interest.
The solution is saving. Not spending. Spending and creating date is weakoning the dollar. I predict an collapse of the dollar within the next 12 months.

I mean, how is the US gonna pay there trading debt? Are they gonna fly the chinese in to play on the golf courses built with taxpayer interest dollars?
Are the chinese gonna sale over here and park in the marina's built to pay it off. If so, that makes sense on spending money on those things to generate dough.
My question for everyone is, what's gonna happen with the numbers reconcile and 3/4's of the taxes from a gallon of gas is gone? LOL.

Obama's right. If both parties agree on 90% of the bill, then it needs to be passed. This isn't like some ordinary yearly budget. The survival of the United States' economy, and indirectly the economy of every country in the world, depends on the passing of this bill.

Though I appreciate the select GOP opposition for expressing their view point, and I'm sure they'll keep us posted on any possible mishandling of the funds, holding up this bill because they can't agree with on everything is a little parochial.
I think this move will hurt them in the long run, but their in for a long painful winnowing period.

I would suggest that they NOT install the same people into office that screwed the whole thing up in the first place. I would then surround myself with advisers that understand the fundamental cause of the problem so that the problem can be fixed at its roots, instead of just `painting over the rust`. I would then dismantle the federal reserve and prosecute the bankers who illegally stole the wealth of the citizens through a corrupt fiat money (laundering) system. Then I would bring back gold..

fuck yeah, the gold standard? i'm TOTALLY with that. but, you can't get anyone to agree on the causes. some people blame sub-prime & no doc loans. some people blame the exportation of labor. ultimately, it's a combination of all those things. rust is gonna happen no matter what. right now, we gotta get the damn car started so we can get the fuck back to work. it'd be nice to fix the car the 'right' way but missing too many days on the job means we don't eat.

That shows you how unknowlegible you are of economics. If we went to the gold standard right now, ee might as will stock up on as much gold as possible because the whole world economy would crash. Right now there are deflationary pressures on the economy not deflationary pressures. Now maybe back in 2003 when interest rates were low and the economy was overheating that would have been a good idea but it would be a total desaster right now. Maybe in the future
