...tremendous acting, wouldn't you say? Mrs van Hopper was quite outstanding there, I thought. I've loved Daphne du Maurier books since my school days in the 50s, Rebecca is just out of this world, the same as Frenchman's Creek which were both based on dreams to start the plots off.. . .thanks for posting this !!
@themrsdinocrocetti He just is LOL. Actually Mr. Olivier is the perfect fantasy in movies. And I heard that he is considered the greatest actor that ever lived. I don't know but he is a beautiful 'natural' and effective actor.
As a weed smokn, pill poppin chick from da hood, u wudnt think I wud b interested in this type of movie, but I adore the book. I actually found the book at Newark airport and hv read it at least 10x, including 2nite, which prompted a google search on the author, which lead to here. Glad to see it on film.
This my absolute favorite book and movie. One of the best ever. The fact that her first name was never given is fabulous. You are right, it let's the reader know that Rebecca is the superior Mrs. de Winter.
@kiny1228 it might have something to do with the name, the memory of Rebecca takes precedence over the physical woman that is only a screen/replacement of the love the main character feels for his old flame. just a thought, i haven't seen the movie yet. just got it in the mail..
@Eyelineredheart the character was a wealthy upper class englishman... I have a better chance of passing for a golden unicorn than gable had of playing such a role
@Eyelineredheart obviously, it just seems weird to me. Cant imagine any hollywood actor less fitted to play an english aristocrat than gable. Now if it was Tarzan's overgrown pet, then you could have a point. for the record I think Olivier was the obvious choice, and although obvious as well, Grant could've brought more mystery to the role. Even other americans like tyrone Power could;'ve been an interesting choice.. but not gable. Just my two cents
@MrCassavius Olivier was so overused as an actor at that time. He was a good actor, but sometimes he comes across as dry and unconvincing in this movie. If you've read the book then you'll see what I mean when he does not convey the full character Du Maurier created.
@Eyelineredheart Yes, Id agree with that. Furthermore I dont think Olivier was a great film actor, but now replacing him with someone like gable, more so coming from someone like yourself who puts emphasis on having read the book, I really dont understand. Whats in the de winter character and in gable as an actor that makes you think would be a good fit? Someone like george sanders, and perhaps my favourite choice of all, Vincent Price, couldve been better than Olivier, but again ot Gable. 2 cts
@Eyelineredheart an offhand comment? splendid, the internet needs more of those (: . I think by our third exchange we've settled that we both agree there could've been better choices than olivier, but not gable and Id say you're about to admit it as much. what more important things you have to do? please keep those cents, they could be important for your future. How have we managed to make this into a sarcastic exchange? I actually wanted to have a debate
@Eyelineredheart Dont think Olivier was as bad as choice as it'd been Gable to be honest, not even close. I think you made the oselznick association with gone with the wind, saw a strong, imposing male character and instantly thought about Gable. But there are other aspects to consider for a character like de winter. Also do you think Gable and Hitchcock would've been a good fit? I have my doubts, Hitch never was interested to cast Gable in one of his movies, though Olivier wasnt his 1st choice
Fascinating book, and excellent movie. There is an actor trained by Sir Laurence Olivier, who embodied Maxim in the remarkable 1979 british mini-series "Rebecca": Jeremy Brett. You can watch "Rebecca" 79 on You Tube, but DVDs are not released. Jeremy Brett was sadly underrated, and his work neglected. As a consequence, many people only remember him as Sherlock Holmes. But he played numerous other parts, as you'll see by watching the video "A Journey through Time".As Maxim, he is gorgeous!!!
Rebecca - a great book indeed by Daphne du Maurier. Another of her book "Frenchman's Creek" was also based on a dream, and like Rebecca - set also in Cornwall. You could be right if you assumed both books very muich reflected Daphne's personal life !!
One of my favorite films! Masterpiece. It's so hard to believe that Laurence Olivier hated her so! Hitchcock said that he used Olivier's hatred (he wanted Vivien Leigh to play the lead) against Fontaine. He told her that everyone on set hated her. Fontaine, shy and timid now, played the perfect role. Just what Hitchcock wanted.
what a beautiful film, Mr Hitchcock you're always amazing!
In my mind the protag wasn't as nervous as she is portrayed here, and Max was older/thinner/not as smiley, but still, pretty good choices XD They would fail so hard if they do a remake.
A great movie, i've understood that it is a great book also and now days it is probably the best musical in the world. I'm glad that i saw the musical in Bucharest
@KaiKaiDvall her name is not caroline.if you read the book carefully she asks to be introduced as caroline de winter, who was one of her husbands dead relatives.its like a fancy dress party,so she dresses up as caroline de winter and asks to be introduced as that.her real name is not mentioned in the book at all.
Any one read the books Mrs. Dewinter and then rebecca's Tale? If your a TRUE fan of Dumarier's classic tale--- YOU MUST READ THESE!!!
WARNING..like pandora and her box..once you continue the story, you can never erase it from memory. The events that are soon to transpire will drastically alter the story and it's characters. Very sad and shocking and pleasently suprising.
I FOR ONE-- loved them. But there is only ONE Dumarier. no one weaves a tale like her.
@MrShaun42088 absolutely agree with you. I first read the book when I was 13 (I'm 18 now)... it quickly became one of my favorite books of all time. It still is up there and Ive read it at least 4 times, each time reveals something I never caught before. I love Dumaurier's style.
@azmw333 I REALLY hope you have read My Cousin rachel... Superb!!! The whole time you read it, your saying to yourself.... Was she Guilty or Innocent?
@azmw333 I REALLY hope you have read My Cousin Rachel... It's Superb!!! The whole time you read it, your saying to yourself.... "Was she Guilty or Innocent?"
I read all the comments and no one made the same connection that I did when I watched it. years ago. You know how Mel Brooks borrows from the classics. He used Mrs. Danvers for Frau Blucher from Young Frankenstein. Even the scene at 2:30 looks like it was borrowed for Young Frankenstein. Love this movie. Love Hitchcock!
@QueenMcB45@ToonAddict Hitchcock changed the ending of Du Maurier's book for the movie! I hope you guys didn't use the same thing! (also - its one of my favorite books so when you get the chance you should read the real ending)
@luname82 in 1940, films could not let a murderer go free. Maxim is portrayed as accidentally killing Rebecca when, in the book, it is more clear that Maxim shot her out of passion but indeed did commit a murder. Alas, in both versions he never truly loved Rebecca so you're safe if you wrote about that.
@luname82 it is quite a drastic comparison on the two versions. It was more than clear..he confess's to his wife that he shot her, blood was everywhere.Have you enjoyed this movie? Seeing that you don't know the difference, i can safely assume that you've never read the book. If you don't like to READ.. I Strongly suggest an Audio Book. that's how i read it (it's the same word for word- It's like a movie that plays in your head.Best part- the narrator's soothing subtle tones make for hours of fun
@azmw333 i love this movie, and i also enjoy reeding.I just finished my last book and since i'm looking for for a new one i was considering REBECCA,but i don't want to be disappointed since i love the movie so much.that is why i was asking q's =)
@luname82 If you loved the Movie... the book is the ULTIMATE way to go. It's in first person perspective. Or that is ...read by the new Mrs. dewinter. All in her perspective so you get to know what she's thinking and feeling. It draws out the emotion and tention even more. I just can't describe how wonderful it was, especially in this little box. PLEASE read it. There's also an added BONUS of so many more wonderful scenes that couldn't fit into the movie. And you'll discover Maxim's REAL secret
@luname82 Have no fear. Hitchcock was quite faithful to the book. Rebecca is one of the very, very few stories in which i like both the book and its movie adaptation.
In the book---and throughout the movie... the main heroin has NO NAME. She's always referred to as Miss, Madame, You!-- Mrs. Dewinter. I'm rather impressed by the author's ability to get away with not using her name throughouot the whole book. Mygoodness... there are many conversations. ....if it bothers you, as it does many, use the power of your own imagination, and think of one for her.
so true... the main heroin has NO NAME. but in the book... when she gets sent flowers with a letter, she exclaims " well, at least he spelled my name correctly" (or something of that matter)-- gives us a clue that it's no simple name. I like to name her Dauphne (yes, after the author-- i also agree with it because it is hard to spell, if unknown to you) ----- Dauphne DeWinter, i think it sounds rather nice. (probably too fancy or plain ol' her)
omg i love later when she's like "im mrs de winter now!!!!" that was beast like right on sista! That danvers is a bitch and that was a the 1940 version of a cardashian bitch slap... exept better...
This is such a classic. I love the story and the production of this movie...... BUT it really bugs me that you never find out the girls name....really bugs me!!
One of my favorite movies. It has such great atmosphere. The opening monologue is so dreamy and it puts you in just the right mood for the rest of it.
If you have "Middle of the Night" with Kim Novak, could you please, please post it or could you tell me if there is a website where I can find it please. Been looking for that one forever. Rebecca's awesome, by the way.
Never seen this before- but seeing all the positive comments, I am making a point to watch it now. So far so good. I'll give me own opinion at the end of the movie. :D
Saw Rebecca years ago and thought it OK but it only on a recent viewing that I realized how good Joan Fontaine is in the role. Also didn't realize how really pretty she was as well.
In my 2nd viewing I finally caught on how Joan was absolutely brilliant in portraying a weak naive your girl at the beginning thru the middle of the film into what we perceive as a strong women at the end and we even see the specific moment when her transformation begins.
I watch classic movies and more here on Utube all the time. Is there a way to copy and put on a disk of my own. Iam not sure how to do it, if its possible. Can anyone help?.....thanks a million!!!

@MrCassavius It was an off hand comment.. i didn't exactly spend time contemplating it.
ha, I got more important things to do.(:
I was just expecting more from the actor selected to play Maxim and Olivier didn't deliver at all very much in my opinion.

MrCassavius 3 months ago
@MrCassavius haaa i suppose!
I read this book for school, and wanted to se the O'Selznick production, and was very disappointed in Oliviers performance.
Gable was not a perfect fit to play the role. He had attributes I thought would have benefited the Maxim character a lot.
I'm sure there were lots of others that cold have compromised on both sides of the spectrum that would be better than Gable or Olivier.
and high school students have a tendency to be sarcastic. just one of our many faults..

@QueenMcB45 @ToonAddict Hitchcock changed the ending of Du Maurier's book for the movie! I hope you guys didn't use the same thing! (also - its one of my favorite books so when you get the chance you should read the real ending)

@azmw333 how are the endings different? he really did love Rebecca?
luname82 10 months ago
@luname82 in 1940, films could not let a murderer go free. Maxim is portrayed as accidentally killing Rebecca when, in the book, it is more clear that Maxim shot her out of passion but indeed did commit a murder. Alas, in both versions he never truly loved Rebecca so you're safe if you wrote about that.

@luname82 oh.thank you. is that what the big fuss is about?i see so many comments about how they are so different....
luname82 10 months ago
@luname82 it is quite a drastic comparison on the two versions. It was more than clear..he confess's to his wife that he shot her, blood was everywhere.Have you enjoyed this movie? Seeing that you don't know the difference, i can safely assume that you've never read the book. If you don't like to READ.. I Strongly suggest an Audio Book. that's how i read it (it's the same word for word- It's like a movie that plays in your head.Best part- the narrator's soothing subtle tones make for hours of fun

@azmw333 i love this movie, and i also enjoy reeding.I just finished my last book and since i'm looking for for a new one i was considering REBECCA,but i don't want to be disappointed since i love the movie so much.that is why i was asking q's =)
luname82 10 months ago

MrShaun42088 10 months ago
so true... the main heroin has NO NAME. but in the book... when she gets sent flowers with a letter, she exclaims " well, at least he spelled my name correctly" (or something of that matter)-- gives us a clue that it's no simple name. I like to name her Dauphne (yes, after the author-- i also agree with it because it is hard to spell, if unknown to you) ----- Dauphne DeWinter, i think it sounds rather nice. (probably too fancy or plain ol' her)

One of my favorite movies. It has such great atmosphere. The opening monologue is so dreamy and it puts you in just the right mood for the rest of it.

Rebecca is one of Hitchcock's greatest classics. Although it would be impossible to pick a favorite, this is definitely in the top 10.

I always pictured Hedy Lamarr when I think of Rebecca. She represents how I think Rebecca would have looked according to the description.

A great performance in a great film.
