hey if someone could help i am kinda new to this. i have a blues harp ms and when i play the low or high notes it souds like i got a lot if air leakage and it sounds like crap. i bent out thereeds as it says in the video but it didnt reall help should i bend the reeds back? or more? or justplay harded i have no clue and if you have a tab for that warmup it would be nice.
@pronk18 The reason you have air leakage is because you over-bent the reed. You can try pushing the reeds INWARD (back the other way) but BE GENTLE! It is best to take a cheap, old, or broken harp; one you don't care about, and practice this technique as Adam suggests in the video. I messed-up one of my harps just like you did, my draw reeds on a few notes were bent WAY too far, but I managed to gently bend the reed back so it plays. Be more careful, practice, and you'll get the technique down.
@pronk18 The reeds on MS harps are very tough so you will probably be okay once you bend them back. You want there to be a very slight gap between the reed and the plate; a larger gap is going to let more air flow through, and when the gap is made smaller, the reed will respond faster. It's all about finding the sweet-spot.
I'm a big Hohner fan since I also play accordion and I really like the MS harps. I modified a Hohner MS Blues Harp which I love to play. Take it slow and happy playing!
Thank You for Posting! This helped me understand metal-reed tuning much better. I have a Hohner Blues Bender harp that I just fixed a sticky 2nd-Hole Draw-Note on, thanks to your method which I'm quickly learning.
My aspiration is to learn to tune both harmonicas and accordions (I play both), mainly because I'm really into fixing things myself and I love tuning and making instruments sound & look better.
OMGGGGGGG this made me from picking up a harmonica being almost not possible to play it from being good at draw bending. I just need to learn how to play now :P It is sooo much easier to play this prbly 10 year old harmonica that thee brass is all tarnish inside. XD I am just spending hours playing and keep trying to get some blowing techniques.
Hey. Can somebody please give ma advice? I´m playing harp for 2 months now and allready have ruined three of them! There´s allways a reed going flat. I don´t know if it´s broken, it just don´t work anymore. What the trick. Am I doing anything wrong? I use Seydel harps and allways warm them up before playing.
hi there, i bought a new harmonica key of D marineband, and my 7,8,9 and 10 hole sound really really bad... can i fix it doing that tecnic that you are explaining?
my teacher wants us to play odd instruments that aren't normally found in school bands, so I chose the harmonica. Haven't actually tried playing it yet so I hope this helps
@Sanoi737 HI me to , and mine had nuts and bolts,,,,you can imagine the result of my new harp,,,,,,it now has a twisted shape,,,,very modern????and i wont be playing guitar or piano for a few days???
i have learned how to bend but i have a problem. i dont have a clue on how to add all those notes in. i can bend but i cant run through alot of different notes real fast like you did at the start.
although the nails that look like screws, on a Hohner Big River (I'm a begginer) are indeed screws.
regardless, that was no big deal. sound advice , i continue to learn from you .
turned out that the problem was air leakage as the reed plate wasnt fully flush with the comb, taking the harp apart showed me the problem then i just made sure the screws were properly securing it all back together , problem solved
Hey - what a coincidence. Just came here for the harp info, and here's Adam. I bought the Living On The River CD years back and I still listen to it. Apart from the great music, I thought you captured a really nice sound on the CD. I just posted a video on my channel that you might like - "Underground" by Rosetta West. Really raw blues.
I was jamming with my guitar-playing-friend and I noticed that the 5th draw note on my Big River C harp is lower than it supposed to be, so i opened the harp and try to pull that reed using my nail, i think this is where i go wrong :) now there is no sound, can I do something apart from thorwing it away?
When I cup the harmonica tightly and play the lower notes , some of the higher notes sound. At first I thought I might be able to use this to my advantage but it's actually very annoying. Is this related to you recommendation not to widen the middle reeds, I might try closing off some of the higher ones slightly. It's a hohner blues harp.
Thanks for the info, although I'll never make it, I still enjoy trying. You on the other hand have made it. Thanks for helping the rest of us. Not many people out there like you.
Thanks for the lesson. I am a relative newbie and saw this lesson a long time ago, but thought my 3 hole just sounded bad because of my "technique". A year later and I just decided to try this on my Lee Oskar A harp, the 3 draw was a little slow and squeeky compared to my other harps but. it seems to have worked!
This is the first time I´ve opened a harp. Now I can pop in the blue 3rd :)

I have at least 20 or so harps. Most of them are hohners. I've been playing harmonica since I was 10 years of age and I am 39 now. at age 13, I started playing blues/ cross-harp style. I have blown out alot of reeds (particularly the lower 3 & 4 reeds) in alot of my harps over the years. By "blown out" I mean, they wont play a note anymore when I draw or exhale on these reeds. My question to you is: Is there any way I can fix these reeds on these harps, or are they shot?
@morbidious: There's a long answer and short answer. Short answer: if the reeds aren't sounding because there's a tiny piece of dried spit between reed and plate, they'll work the moment you slide an ATM slip in there and clear out the obstruction; if they're not sounding because they're literally broken off, No you can't fix them. Long answer: good harp techs can fix anything. They'll replace the reeds. I can't do that.
@KudzuRunner Thanks Adam....I enjoyed your talk about the difference in "E"'s on an 'A' harp and the importance of the 2 hole to french harp'n. Also the free admission about read replacement...
i have not learned to replace them ether. Still good to recommend a long moist warm up to start the read freeing process.....

Thanks a lot for your videos, but I can't quite tell in this one whether you are filing off the end/very tip of the reed, or if you are scrubbing along the flat part of the reed near the tip. Wow man I have been playing harp for almost 10 years now and I didn't know any of that stuff. Thanks for putting this on youtube brother! And you are SICK at the harmonica! Also I'd like to see what you think about the Suzuki Manji. Is it worth buying?
@GovernorSwarzenegger: I happen to prefer Hohner Marine Bands, but Suzuki sent me a Manji and there's no question it's a great harp. A lot of people on my website's forum speak highly of it. So yes: it's worth the money. You should spend a bit of money, try different makes and models, and settle on whatever sounds and feels best.
hi, i bougfht my first harmonica, is a Hohner MS of wood and silver.. and after two months i had a problem with this.. The problem is that i have no sound in the hole 3, ..i blow but it doesn´t sound.. but at the same time i have sound when i do the bending ni the same hole... i was thinking that myabe is dirty or there is something inside... what dou you recommend me?... should i open it and try to clean it?.. and could you explain me how todo it please?... thanks

I bought a cheep honer just to see if I could still play.. It is really hard to draw. Will using a paper to lift the reeds make it easier to play? I know this is more of a toy ( I only payed 6 bucks for it ,but it is still a Honer) and now that I am convinced I can still play after 15 years I need to buy a real blues or marine band one for 35 bucks. I used to have 5 or 6 of them and just threw them away before learning I can buy seperate reeds.. UGHHH. I used to pay 7 or 8 bucks back in mid 80s
@CRAIGARRR: Marine Band harps cost about $29 at Musician's Friend. There's a link on the "harmonicas for sale" page of my website, Modern Blues Harmonica
Should be an easy fix, probably just some gunk caught in the reed. Unscrew the face plates and run the brass reed plate under the faucet, maybe give em a once over with a toothbrush. Works like a charm. P.S. My name is also davie... small world:-)
i want to learn the harmoniica but i dont know where to buy a nice once, like i dont have alot of money as im only 15 and yeah i live in australia, can yu help a little?
I just bought my first harmonica and i was playing it like crazy and i was watching something about having to clean your reeds and so i tried that whole thing with the alcohol and tooth brush but now a couple of my notes wont bend so is there any way to fix that, that you know of?
Adam thanks a lot for sharing your harmonica knowledge! I have a Marine Band (C) and try to progress with it, but the "2 draw" doesn't work . Is there a way I can fix that? This happens only with the 2.
Hey hows it going, i watch your videos from time to time and i understand that you know pretty much everything you need to know about harmonicas.
You see i have a Hohner Blues Harp MS and i have had this one for a little over a month now, everything works great but, the 2 hole when i blow sounds like there is a tiny bell inside that really annoys me. I'm not sure if i just need to clean it or if somethings wrong. But if there is something wrong, than it is good to have a MS in this situation
Thanks so much for what you may have considered insignificant but I appreciate you saying " I don't know where I'm going with that" I thought I was the only one that got totally lost from a spot I didn't know where I was to begin with.
I'd like to learn to play more like Will Shade and Daddy Stovepipe rather than Sonny Boy or Little Walter. Do you know of any resources or have any advice other than just listen? Thanks! n.
@nichmars: I think you should pay a visit to Joe Filisko in Chicago and take a private lesson or two. He may give Skype lessons, too. He's one of the few guys around who really knows that style. The other is Wade Schuman, from Hazmat Modine. Track him down!
@KudzuRunner Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I'll look him up. I go crazy listening to Will Shades stuff with the jug band and trying to pick it up. Cheers!
Smooth style and you impart confidence all in one package.
Having played a few instruments in my 64+ years, I decided it was time to get a harp (and I got a few). Like my wife's shoes, the collection just grows. I've just ordered a few of the new Hohner Crossovers. This is great as I needed to mechanical aspects opened up for me. Thanks for that info.
thanks alot, Ive noticed now that all my hohners 2 draw are flat outta the box, but my lee oksar isnt so, regardless if it gets dull i will know what to do.
Why do harp players move their fingers so much? I picked up harp about 2 days ago lol no joke and I only know how to play along with one song(no name #2 - Elliott Smith) plus I'm messing around with bending...and I understand this song is as simple as it gets but the finger stuff baffles me. Not to be underestimated musically I've played guitar for years and know my way around drums and bass.
Hi Adam, I noticed that you hold the harp the same way I do. I have been playing over 40 years and at one time took lessons from Joe Phiisko who told me not to alter my way of holding the harp. I think it comes from a lot of accoustic playing, and using mic's that were not comfortable to hold.
Harmonica Robert, There's another harmonica robert on utube-not me.
I have a lee Oskar in C and my 9 hole Blow sounds tinny and weak, and it takes a lot of effort to get it to sing, whereas all my other ones are fine, what should I do?
I have to agree with you: of the hundreds of thousands of people who have viewed, and learned from, my videos, at least three people--one per year--have taken time out of their day to tell me that. One fundamental spiritual principle of the universe is that like attracts like. This would suggest that you notice my scariness--rather than, say, my skill, or my passion--because you, too, are scary, or scared. Interesting. Well, you're one of three to notice, in three years. Thanks!
you're amazing!!! I hope to be as good as you one day soon!

So yes: it's worth the money. You should spend a bit of money, try different makes and models, and settle on whatever sounds and feels best.

@daviewavie112 reeds are stuck is all.. Take it apart and pry the reed up with paper..as he shows.. It will be right as rain again!

@daviewavie112 RE: My harp doesn't work...
Should be an easy fix, probably just some gunk caught in the reed. Unscrew the face plates and run the brass reed plate under the faucet, maybe give em a once over with a toothbrush. Works like a charm. P.S. My name is also davie... small world:-)

Adam thanks a lot for sharing your harmonica knowledge! I have a Marine Band (C) and try to progress with it, but the "2 draw" doesn't work . Is there a way I can fix that? This happens only with the 2.
thanks for your help

Hey hows it going, i watch your videos from time to time and i understand that you know pretty much everything you need to know about harmonicas.
You see i have a Hohner Blues Harp MS and i have had this one for a little over a month now, everything works great but, the 2 hole when i blow sounds like there is a tiny bell inside that really annoys me. I'm not sure if i just need to clean it or if somethings wrong. But if there is something wrong, than it is good to have a MS in this situation

I'd like to learn to play more like Will Shade and Daddy Stovepipe rather than Sonny Boy or Little Walter. Do you know of any resources or have any advice other than just listen? Thanks! n.
nichmars 1 year ago
@nichmars: I think you should pay a visit to Joe Filisko in Chicago and take a private lesson or two. He may give Skype lessons, too. He's one of the few guys around who really knows that style. The other is Wade Schuman, from Hazmat Modine. Track him down!
KudzuRunner 1 year ago
@KudzuRunner Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I'll look him up. I go crazy listening to Will Shades stuff with the jug band and trying to pick it up. Cheers!

warchild1976 1 year ago
@warchild1976: Every blues player needs to master the A harp, which is what you'd use to play along with a blues in E. That's where I'd start.
KudzuRunner 1 year ago
@KudzuRunner - A local guitar player who is well known in the clubs told me the same thing - skip 'C' and go with 'A'.

Harmonica Robert, There's another harmonica robert on utube-not me.

why do you prefer the marine band harp over the blues harp ...both by honer

I'd have to say that the marine band has a more powerful sound while the blues harp is easier to play.

kjeldvontijn 2 years ago
I have to agree with you: of the hundreds of thousands of people who have viewed, and learned from, my videos, at least three people--one per year--have taken time out of their day to tell me that. One fundamental spiritual principle of the universe is that like attracts like. This would suggest that you notice my scariness--rather than, say, my skill, or my passion--because you, too, are scary, or scared. Interesting. Well, you're one of three to notice, in three years. Thanks!

Adam, I love your videos, but I have to argue:
"One fundamental spiritual principle of the universe is that like attracts like."
No, no, no. Opposites attract. North and South, Plus and Minus. It's physics!

@xp0ferens
Ehhhm, that really ONLY applies to anything in science.
Besides he said spiritual, which relates to the souls of the living. Similar people attract,
not really opposites.
