Ottis did it much better 50 years ago. There is nothing new going on here. just a poor imitation. Why would you listen to this product's music when you could just listen to the Back Catalogues of the likes of Ottis Redding, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield etc? It's sad to see a pioneering label like Warp Records putting out this regurgitated shit.
@SMELLTHEBULL Why don't you try appreciating music more often instead of putting down the stuff that isn't what you like. Or maybe you're the type to judge musicians because you can never compare to them. I don't know either way you're an idiot for posting this.
@ReversibelNagard Aye, his stuff seems to have predated a lot of glitch and IDM although some of the Supercollider stuff mixed the experimental influence with his soulful vocals. Talented guy, without a doubt and I second your recommendation to check out his other material.
When it comes to singing with soul...either you HAVE IT or YOU DONT! Makes no difference what shade your complection is. Its inside you and comes out thru what ever you do.
Saw him on 10th July at the Prince Concert in Werchter Park, he was just great! He is so funky, I am surprised that I did not here something about him earlier......
I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeee this song, makes me feel good, his music makes me feel good. I just want to swing through the world and dance and shake and idontknowwhat when i hear this song.
eric hutchinson described this sound best as "a british guy who sounds like american 50's soul " - Otis Redding is the best comparison I've heard of so far but Otis has more bass in his voice. The chorus with the layered vocals is the part that really brings that 50's soul sound home in my opinion - that's such a classic sound it immediately makes me think Mo-town which is where people are getting stevie from maybe...?
ah, okay, so there is no sense behind it. i thought maybe he lives there. or there's some other kind of connection. i just wondered why somebody makes a movie in this rather lame city.
This dude is sick. When I first heard this at work, I kinda schluffed it off as some obscure Stax or Atlantic hit from the 60s or something. Then I really started listening to it, and I thought, "There's no way that this song is old. It sounds kinda modern." And I was even more surprised to find out the guy singing it was white. Wow. Dude really had me goin' for a second. I take my hat off to JL, because he's got more soul than any other blue-eyed soul singer I've ever heard.
Him being white didn't surprise me that much, what did surprise me though was him being English (im english myself by the way) i think it really shows how the big labels perceive talent and marketable, he should by all means be more well known his talent is unquestionable and actually makes really catchy pop songs
Love that song, wether he's black or white, wether he 'copied' it or not.
You still have to express your feelings in the song in a way appealing to us, listeners. I love funk, soul and pop too. Music is for all creative souls is my opinion. If you can identify with it, feel the groove, the music, the beat and express it; its great!
Honestly if we followed this line of thinking we would still be listening to drum circles. Art is the process of stealing someone else's style and then putting your own spin on it.
If we followed this line of thinking we would create our own unique music with a spirit of authenticity.
Art is being true to yourself, your culture, your environment and your materials and the instruments of your art. It is striving for your own voice. It certainly is not plagarism, copying, stealing or anything remotely like that. Evolution is one thing adopting a completely foreign voice is another. It is the attitude of the servile.
Look at what Hip-Hop effectively is. Take a sample, loop it up, then put your style and change it into something that will become uniquely yours.
Pablo Picasso, Steve Jobs, etc. all understood that human "innovation" doesn't come from true original thought but by building on those who came before us did.
You can disagree with me if you like, I'm not going to change my mind. Perhaps "stealing" is harsh but I think its a tounge in cheek way to put it.
Innovation does come from orignial thought. Ask the man who invented calculus who he copied?
The truth is that we can and do take ideas and extend them but your example of 'hip-hop' perfectly illustrates my point. Those guys aren't creative and most of what they do doesn't even qualify as music in my book. They steal someone elses music and swear over the top of it. Yo nigga, that aint creatiff braa!!! If that is your example of creativity, I rest my case right there.
