Happy Birthday to Mr. Brook Benton on the anniversary(19th Sept.) of his birth...he would have been 80 today.Thank you for posting this lovely tribute. I loved his beautful voice. He was one of Elvis' favourite vocalists.
Brook Benton was a fantastic songwriter before he became a singer. He wrote "A Lover's Question" for Clyde McPhatter, "The Stroll" by The Diamonds, Looking Back by Nat King Cole, and "This Generation" for The Friends of Distinction.
He died in 1988 of spinal meningitis. I have over 1400 cd's, and he is my favorite performer! Thanks to a fan in the U.K. we think we have every recording from his major record affiliations. It just doesn't get any better that this..
i'm looking for an album of his my parents used to play in the car on tape. It would be from the early mid 80s, i think it is a compilation
it has on it:
thank you pretty baby, shadrach, rainy night in georgia, boll weevil song, my true confession, think twice, kiddio, think twice, so many ways, it's just a matter of time, hotel happiness
have you got any ideas which one it may be and where i coudl get a cd version?
Brook Benton was one of the most consistent, and best, vocalists in the 1958=1962 timeframe. He was right there with Cole, Sinatra, Mathis and Bennett. A talent such as his should never be forgotten. I know because I was there. Thanks for the post.
He was the best. If you can find recordings of THE TIES THAT BIND and HITHER THITHER AND YON, you will really enjoy them. I heard he died penniless, he deserved much better.
Huge loss. I had the great privilege of playing with Brook Benton in the early '80's and I nearly feel over after when I heard him sing a couple of bars of Rainy Night ... As a jazz guy, I coulda cared less of some guy singing in that genre, until he sang ... and then I was ALL IN. Huge talent and a voice of old hickory ... miss ya man!!
He really died penniless? If he did, this is the same kind of thing to happen to Jackie Wilson I have heard. They sang and sold millions of records and others took the money. This is sad to know.

Does anyone have B.B.'s "Hit Record." That one seems to have gotten lost among his classics!

Yes I have it.

Thanks Lynn731: "Janschro" posted it several months ago. You're probably one of the few people who even heard of, or has, "hit Record"! Cheers.
