  • Thank you for making these videos. They are so valuable and informative. I knew how to draw as a young girl but did not know the all of the important techniques behind drawing a great picture vs a good picture. You are an incredible artist. Keep the videos coming.

  • I just wanted to thank you for putting so much effort into these videos. I never really did much portrait sketching on paper these are VERY helpful for transitioning from Photoshop to pencil! I intend to upload my first drawings to Deviant Art :) come find me startxeyes on deviantart :)

  • i can go on and on and on about how amazing you are. But one word BRILLIANT!!!

  • when you look at it squint your eyes and you will see no difference between the 2

  • im having problem with shading this really helped

  • which video shows me what to do next with this one please? Is there a 5E?

Really enjoying your vids btw, thank you so much for sharing. x

  • it's 6A - Measuring (:

  • i loved my surprise, its hangin on my wall,

    lynda x

  • Looks like a face :O Like an ear, eyebrow and an eye :O Bur very blurry :S

  • god dude i want to go on to the next video so bad, but I know for the better sake of me I should not but at this point in time I can't even work on the excersizes with no measurement frame.

  • ARGH! I want to go to the next episode so bad, but i have no money and none of the drawing supplies I need yet, and no transportation! P.S. I'm a child so I have no source of income or license, for that matter. I'm going to not eat lunch for a few days to save up money. BTW these tutorials are incredibly helpful, mostly for their psychological value on how the artist views drawing in my opinion, because I can sketch pretty well when I abandon my worries and use the reference point theory :D

  • I got my art supplies! :D Thanks so much for providing a fifteen year-old with an incredibly good tutorial and lots of great fundamental information. You are a brilliant artist and a pretty generous person to give such good quality videos, information, etc. All completely for free. You seem to completely disregard greed, and that is a very admirable thing to see from someone with a very marketable ability.

  • oh god damnit of all the things I could possibly forget i forget the friggin ruler! now I can't even do the excersizes! @#*!

  • 15 huh your profile lists your age as 22!

    what's the real story here?

    --Rick

  • People simply give me crap due to my age, so in order to avoid a completely stupid, unfounded discrimination I BS the youtube statistics.

  • I don't know why but I feel the urge to do this... I can't click on the link for the next episode till i finish doing this. The dude's voice makes you promise your loyalty to him!!!

  • great video indeed

i learned quite a lot from all the parts

  • Nice! Is it a part of a face? I think I can see the edge of the eye.. heheheh, please continue sharing your knowledge to us.. :)

  • thanks for this. the approach help a lot. my portraits have improved with quite a leap. still want to get a lot better though. so i will be watching your videos.

  • This video kind of was depressing because my dog ate my kneaded eraser, found it on the floor today. Any ways love your videos. Very different way of learning the values.

  • never tryed shading anything before great lessons. Nearly there , took couple of goes till I got used to how much presure to apply. Can't finish till my eraser comes though :(

  • i didn't really use a lot of pencils, because they were not fascinanting to me, nothing like i wanted, the whole package of ustensils...

  • is this really happening? or i'm in my most beautiful dream? ;)

  • woooot i love my new eraser!!!! this will be like the awesomest 3hour playlist ever! =D

  • Did you use the same pencil all along?

  • wheres the next episode dude!

  • so we need to do these b4 going to next episode

  • how can i make that imagen on the left?

  • by going to the link he provided in the more info part on the right and printing them :-) the eclecticasylum link

  • thanks :)

  • thanks for the lessons. i'll be restarting my drawing endeavours and i am learning something new from you which would be proven valuable in improving my workmanship. of course, i will yet have to complete the whole episodes tomorrow. can't wait to start anew my interest in drawings as well as in paintings.

  • I dont even draw and i like watching these videos i dont know why.

  • watch bob ross !!! it's way better because bob has a sooooothing voice. i used to watch when i came home at night (i didn't draw then) but in a way he got me drawing... whatever look for bob ross - the joy of painting!!!

  • you should have slightly sped up the parts where you weren't talking, that way it would probably only go to "C" and be less boring and more informative.

  • then you wouldn't get to seethe natural movement of his hand whilst shading....

  • It's trickey. Some people want it fast but lots of people want to see it slow. If you are bored you should stop watching and start drawing.

  • @EclecticAsylumArt im glad you didn't speed up. i like watching the process, real time.

  • cant u just use a blending tortillion to blend it?

  • you can but this method seems cleaner.

  • yeah, but it will take a lot more time, and what i mean is blend it lightly so it mixes a little.

  • i know what u mean, but I've noticed that w/ a tortillion you get certain areas where the shading isn't even, like some areas will have unequal shading because of how small the tortillion is which makes it look sloppy. It is a very good method but i like this one better... and plan on trying it.

  • Blending with blenders, tortillions, fingers seem easy but they actually very complicated and take technique to do it right. That's why art teachers say blending is bad. It's not bad but if you don't know what you are doing it won't help you. It's best to learn to control your pressure first. Once you can get a whole range of value with a 2b or 4b pencil then you can learn to use blenders.

  • i like using a 6b because I don't have a 4b, my set is:

5h (don't use it as much since your tutorial, just for sketching, not for pieces of art anymore) 2H HB, 2B, 6B, 8B

  • Above hb is not really good for peaces of art. I reccomend a HB, a 2B, 4B and maybe a 6B. Anyway i have from 6H to 9B. There is also a F which stands for fine. You should use them in this order/way, HB for details, 2B for sort of shading, 4B for normal shading and 6B for dark shading. H is useless. I think, this is my opinion.

    Thankyou

  • i would have to disagree w/ you saying that above HB isn't good for pieces of art, because imo thats just false. HB can make midtones and light tones (if you have good control), but to make it so that your piece can have that nice value, and still be changeable in a neat manner, i would say you will frequently need a 4B or 6B seeing as hair is usually black or dark for that matter. But i must say 6B is prolly best you'll need. i find 8B too soft, and it doesnt apply well imo...

  • I didn't say that HB was bad. I said I recommend it and I think HB is actually the best by its self because its in the middle of b and h. I said I dont reccomend above hb. Hb i recommend and the rest that i stated but hb and above isn't really useful. You should use Hb for detailing and the rest for shading. Maybe use Hb for lighter stuff. If for portraits all you really require to make a good one is HB and 4B. But I also draw other things. Not just portraits.Soo if you r doing still life or-

  • - animals thats my opinion okay. Anyway i like all mediums: charcol, watercolour, pencils, pen, fineliners and coloured pencils. and lots more.Tell me what you think.

  • what i'm saying is 6b is a nice one imo. HB and a 6B is my preference, and maybe a 2-3b. But it really depends on the set of pencils tho, i just got a 6b a while back that was about as dark as my 8B, and darker than my other 6B by a mile (the other 6b looked like a 2 bor 3b xD.)

  • Some times they stuff up the led. In one of my sets the 6B is darker than the 7B! It could just be the sharpening.

  • o.o i know what you talking about, blending brings the art piece to life but its tricky because you have to check your blending material every time u blend, because if its all dark and u blend a light area, it'll be a big mistake and it's very hard to control.

  • i know what you mean !it is so great, thank you

  • what do you mean by: you wanna do these, before watching the next episodes. drawing it myself or just watching?

  • What I think he means by it is that you draw the shapes before you watch the next episode, because you're going to need it, but I'm not quite sure.

  • Without a doubt you should do the drawings yourself. This helps conditioning your hand in applying different pressure and your eye/brain to pick up value differences. It takes a little practice to look at objects in terms of values, in the sense he's describing them in the videos.

  • its hard to draw while talking because using the language skills is in the logical part of your and it brings back the symbols and you start thinking "now im drawin the eye, now the nose"... and so on.. dont think just use your eyes.

  • "...stop thinking of what youre drawing and start drawing what youre seeing..."

  • hey whats the surprise I think some episodes are missing ?

  • Thanks Jason.

  • please please but the next video up soon, these are great!

  • These videoes are so great!!! but where is episode 6?

  • Thank you Soooooooo MUch! more more!

  • Jason - thanks for these lessons. They are great. I really like Betty Edwards book and your lessons pick right up on that (Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain).

  • all of those leaving negative comments are probably those who can't draw and thought this video would make them draw mona lisas just by watching them .. sorry ..he forgot to say : it takes some practice and dedication too.. but so does everything.he just lays out the basics. peace to you eclectiasylum..

  • Hey Jason --

Where is Episode 6 so we can see our surprise?

  • i find all the negative comments to be silly. these exercises are a very useful tool for ANYONE learning or furthering their drawing skills. yes, some people have a natural talent. but even the best baseball player didn't become so without learning different techniques. it's how you perceive it. listen to his comments as he speaks. it gives you a different way to understand. it also takes a LOT of practice.

all that said, i enjoy these, keep em comin!

  • I just realized..... You can give someone whos never drawn before a bad pencil, and make it look bad. You can give someone who knows how to draw, a bad pencil. And it will look amazing.

Its ther person that handles to tool, not the tool that makes it magnificent.

  • well i can see, half of the two eyes and half of a nose. It jut look like a man with a very fine nose

  • Oh its half a head/face... ear, half the eye, eyebrow, and a little of hair! Well that is what it looks like to me... haha

  • its a blurry edgar allen poe-half

  • lol..it does look like 1/4 of a guys face :P

  • its actually 1/4 of an upside down womans jaw

  • How did you know that?

  • noononon i dont think so n my head hurts now that i bent it so much

  • Very nice work and great of you to spend your time on tuts! Keep up your tutorials, they are very motivating and inspiring!

  • Browsing through your videos, I realize you are an artist like no other. You stretch into so many forms of art, such as MS Paint, drawing, toast painting, mascara paintings, BBQ paintings, and many other. You are a new kind of artist, and you deserve a lot of credit for your ingenuity and creativity.

  • i guess you're right, but it doesn't really matter where you draw them, or however awesomely creative you were in thinking of a tool to use, or a material to paint on..

a race car driver can use a novel type of car, or race on special types of tracks, but that doesn't mean anything really

  • But see, not everyone can take such objects/tools that seem unrelated to art to a typical person and use them to create such good art. He's capable of doing that.

  • i was so happy n excited when i found out what the surprise is going to be..!! i wont say it here i hope nobody will until the next episode.. i'm just too excited n want to post something here.. haha

  • thanks for the lessons so far.. cant wait for the next episode.. hope u keep doing this.. i really dont mind whether its slow or fast tutorial.. i'll watch every second.. gogogo..!

  • I was wondering if you will put sketching tehnique that you showed us while painting monalisa in MS paint. I still have those triangles in my head. But everything in it's time I guess.

  • um can you do pastels technicks next

  • One day I want to. Pastels are great way for someone to use color as a hobby. Don't have to worry about a mixed palette drying out or brushes going bad. Pastel is a easy to start and stop with long breaks in between.

  • Love what you are doing!

Such a great way to Teach!

  • Hi Jason, love your work. However I feel you veer from those "extra fast" pieces which wow us all, to these "extra slow" tutorials which might lose some people along the way. But I really appreciate all you do and I think your art is FANTASTIC - I try to emulate you! I'd really be grateful for your feedback, THANKS!

  • I'm trying to balance both of them. next video is going to be a fast crazy video. Also working on other videos...more how its made videos with a bronze casting sculpture and a a pastel maker.

  • I'm so glad you are continuing your portrait tutorials. Thank you so much.

  • i see the corner of a mouth

  • love the tutorials. thanks.

  • lol good point

  • ;] Thanks for posting great stuff

  • awesome i see the face AND i see alittle alian elf dude thats fat on the left

  • does anybody else see a part of a face in there? like i see an ear, some hair, an eyebrow, and an eye.

  • I see a shot of a man looting at the ground, on a sidewalk.

  • i could see it after you pointed it out

  • ooo i see it too!! lol but i do also see was schooba said too.

  • wow. 4 vids. i watched em all. thanx for theses vids

  • You're a great artist, and it's also great that you share your gift with others and teach your techinques.

  • Great lesson. I love your approaching of starting from the fundamentals. My hat's off to you. Thank you!

  • good lessons
