Man this was baseball. Not the shithole Orioles of today. No matter what every team had a FRANCHISE player. An Oriole who lived in Baltimore and loved the town. I always said when Cal Ripken retired that would be it and it is true. I can't even name one stinking player on that team, they are the fucking Cleveland Browns of baseball.
@ocabcabin7 According to Kuiper, when he went up for his first at-bat in his major league career, Haller told him not to plan on walking! Kuip was so nervous, he grounded into a double play on the first pitch. Guys later told him that it counted as two at-bats, and he worried about that. Pretty funny.
Haa..The Orioles are playing against the Detroit Tigers in this clip...and I'm also watching the Orioles play against the Tigers right now...lets just say the 2010 Orioles definately aren't Weaver's Orioles...

What a stupid sport. Real men would have retired alone to a cozy corner behind the men's room and settled it like men instead of shooting off their big mouths. All you have after this silliness is a big bag of nothin'.
This is part of baseball, part of the tradition, history...stupid sport to you maybe. Its about the manager sticking up for his team. And some of the managers really get into it, as Weaver often did.
If Earl Weaver had a Hof caliber relief pitcher from say 1968 to 1982,I mean a shut down 7th inning on guy like Rollie Fingers,Goose Gossage,Sparky Lyle,John Hiller,Dan Quisenberry,Bruce Sutter,Lee Smith,Randy Myers,Kent Tekulve,or even a young Al Hrabosky his orioles would have won at least 11o games every season he managed those teams. His O's had no closer in 1974 to 1979 in Eddie Watt,Don Hood,Bob Reynolds,Dyer Miller,Dick Drago, and the lousy Don Stanhouse who nearly gave Earl a heart attack
@rayjr62 Just imagine McNally,Palmer,Cuellar,Dobson,Torrez,Grimsley,McGregor,Flanangan,Steve Stone,Rudy May,Garland,Alexander,Dennis Martinez, had a closer like Rollie Fingers or Sparky Lyle to enter in the late innings and shut the door.Davey Johnson had Randy Meyers succesfully close 45 out of 46 games in 1997.Sparky Anderson had Willie Hernandez successfully close 35 out of 35 in 1984.Just imagine Earl Wever bringing in A Bruce Sutter after his team led after seven innings???
@cmf43210 A sad epitaph for a once great franchise. 40 years ago, when you talked top to bottom, everyone inside baseball knew that the 2 best franchises were the Orioles and the Dodgers. It's not that way anymore.
@rayjr62 The Orioles and Pirates had baseballs first and third best records in baseball from 1960 to 1983 and met in the world series a couple times. Now the Orioles have had 13 straight loosing seasons (AL record) and the Pirates have had a major league record 19 straight loosing seasons..The common denomenators name is Syd Thrift who was the Pirates GM from 1982 to 1996 and the Orioles GM from 1998 to 2005.Syd Thridt should be in the hall of shame next to Denny McLain,Dave Kingman,Jose Canseco.
How about the 1977 season, when Earl weaver lost reggie Jackson,Bob Grich and 20 game winner Wayne garland to the rival teams with money to blow, yet he found himself in first place at the all star break with a record of 60-39 and wound up loosing the division by two games to the Yankees despite winning 97 games.Weaver did it with an outfield of Slow kenny Singleton,Al Bumbry,Pat Kelly,Carlos Lopez,Andres Mora and larry Harlow. His catchers couldnt hit, neither could his shortstop Belanger(.224).
@TheLimpwristed --Ear was an absolute genius at utilizing his players, as well as strategy. Could argue that he could have emphasized speed a little more, as the Birds pretty much played basic standup ball---power hitting, gd fielding and pitching. But some teams successful with aggressive baserunning, forcing other team into mistakes. Prob the only citicism you can have re Earl
@loyaldude10 Earl Weaver knew how to use speed. His 1973 Orioles set a major league record for having ten players with over 10 stolen bases each!!!Al Bumbry,R.Coggins,Baylor,Blair,Rettenmund,Tommy Davis,Belanger,Grich,Earl Williams and Motton. To this day that record stands!!!His team didnt hit well (.228) or score runs in 1972 so Earl Weaver unloaded Oates,Johnson,Buford and promoted as much speed as possable and proceeded to win 97 games in 1973,the most in the major leagues.
@loyaldude10. He also utilized the radar gun and computer use of players from every team and how they hit in situations in certain innings against certain pitchers. For instance, Mark Belanger, a poor hitter, hit .244 against Nolan Ryan but hit about .500 from the 7th inning or 8th inning on. The point is when the 8th inning came, Earl left him in instead of lifting him for a pinch hitter.
Or Weavers 1973 Orioles, who had hit only .228 the year before.Weaver tried to trade for Bill Buckner and Reggie jackson and billy Williams many times, but wound up with the fat, lazy, immature Earl Williams who was a total bust.Yet Weaver had his team running running running and that season his Orioles stole more bases than any team in history and he had a total of ten players with ten or more stolen bases.still a baseball record!!The Orioles won the division as 5-1 underdogs, and took the A's to 5.
Earl Weaver baseballs best manager ever..YES....Dont tell me he lost 3 world Series, nobody could have beaten the 69Mets in those 5 games. The 71 pirates were Clementes blessing, and ditto for the 79 pirates with Stargell. If you dont think Weaver was great look at 1974 when he won the division title without Jim Palmer for 2/3 of the season when palmer was like God out there on the mound.Palmer went only 7-12 in his worst season, yet Weavers Orioles won more games than any team in the AL.
Beautiful- game starts at 7:35 and Weaver is ejected about 7:37...

Ah yes, back in the Good Old days when the AL East was solely a 3 team race between the Yankees, the Red Sox and the Orioles back in the 70's.

Much agreed! Gotta love those fiery managers. Weaver stood up for the Orioles because what he cared about most was winning ball games!
