Great song. Beautiful drums and guitars, great lyrics. I'm a little confused here though.... is Lenin mentioned in this song? Or Trotsky? For you deaf listeners... the revolution described in this tune is a revolution of the heart. It's a revolution of the human soul, apolitical and non-ideological. I agree only to a point... Steve does describe himself as a socialist, so there is an element of political reform and it is not just about change of heart. That said, Steve also describes himself as a pacifist, so don't think he would be all that sympathetic to Lenin. And in any case, he is writing in a post cold war context, and this came out right before the 2004 election, so the was as much about the loss of and silencing of the left within the US.

Inaddition, if you remove the incentives for self promotion, innovation, and invention no one will take up the helm in those areas. How does this quote support free market? Voting and socialism are not exclusive. Earle has said in many interviews, for years, that he is a socialist. He is not a fan of the free market (see songs like Back to the Wall, Snake Oil and the album this song comes from.)

That said, I don't think his socialism is doctrinaire and I would guess that he would suppport democratic socialism. I don't think he would want to be asscociated with Stalin or totalitarian communism.
