  • I'm still in my mothers womb and enjoy listening to this type of music....

  • "-Braving those angry swines-"

That's the only thing I find wrong with this song, it's a little offensive seeing as not all men on the German side were Nazis. Just men protecting their families and their country.

But I love the rest of it!

  • Proud to be English

  • no autotune <3

  • I love Vintage TV

  • misterpang2 Thanks for your reply. Wonderful that she's still with us.

  • This is what is missing in music today. Clear voices singing a beautiful melody. There are a lot of good voices out there right now, these singers just don't realize that the melody is more important than showing off with a bunch of vocal frills and trills that render the melody completely obscure

  • The last time i saw my Nana this song was playing.... she died a week later. I'm 14 years old and i listen to this to remind me of her.

  • @123Frithy Your Nana had lovely music taste.

  • This song will never get old!

  • Things like this defeated Fascism without politics, although soldiers helped

  • @HMSDevere72 massively

  • YES..... LONG LIVE ENGLAND...!!!!

  • Is it true that she recently topped the charts again in England when they re-released her old recordings? Can someone who's English confirm this for me please. Still alive in her 90s, I believe--what a wonderful lady!

  • @HMSDevere72 I'm only 13 and I love this song xD

  • Beautiful song!

  • My grandad used to play this song all the time and later on had dementia and would worry constantly but as soon as you played this song he closed his eyes and hummed a long.

  • Love the war time era theme its nice and reassuring that we may win the war through high spirits and good will

  • I've met Vera lynn, she was beautiful and filled me with happiness and love, god bless her. <3

  • thank you for sharing this beautiful sing . god bless

  • Im dedicating this song to My Nana<3 This is the song which was playing last time i saw her before she died <3 R.I.P Nana, Say hi to Grandad for me xxxx

  • This was played at a 40's night last night that i went to, where my grampa was playing sax in a big swing band. It almost brought tears to my eyes, thinking about what all those people went through in the WW. then we all sang "Rule Britannia" i wish everyone was as proud as their country as i am! Beautiful song Vera Lynn!

  • went to a funeral yesterday and this was the song playing. miss you dan x

  • I'm an 19 year old male from the Netherlands and I believe this music is marvelous. Isn't that the true definition of timeless music.

  • we are singing this song in st.pauls primary school in the wnd of the term.

  • Love this song so much! Peter from Germany

  • Dunkirk evacuations comes to my mind

  • I saw her live in 1995, at the Hamilton Ontario Air Show.

  • @neopreneca I envy you :)

  • Pardon the vanity but you should've heard me singing this especially at karaoke sessions!

  • my grandmother always wants a hug when she plays this song

  • I always feel touchy and cry with this song and all it means. Now that nazis are coming back in Europe, we must remember all those people who fought and died for freedom!!!

  • @tonirabascall Hitler would have gladly done homage in London if he had been given a chance. Everything depends on England.

  • @aellarex Sorry what did you say?

  • I always feel touchy and cry with this song and all it means. Now that nazis are coming back in Europe, we must remember all those people who fought and died for freedom!!!

  • This song brings tears to my eyes. I remember my grandpa listening to this on the radio, singing along in his baritone voice. Seems like yesterday.

  • Anyone who likes this song should check out the version done by the great Louis Prima

  • Grandad's favourite song xx

  • @Concorde1957

    Where did you hear that?

That's interesting if it's true though.

  • Always reminds me of being a child, my mum would sing this too me and i'd sing it in talent competitions, makes me smile <3

  • Little Jimmy, mentioned in the song, died in 2010

  • Great song!!! It is a huge sense of inspiration for many people, including me!

  • It make your heart swell, listening to this and remembering a time when we fought for our country, when we had pride and honour. When we refused to let an evil foreign force invade our shores.

    What changed ?

  • Sad reminder of conflict, but peaceful and calming all the same.

  • man i don't know how people had the courage to charge those machine guns on D-day.. R.I.P every1 that died in all conflicts to date

  • @xT0TALP0WN3Rx The casualties of the Second World War were absolutely mind boggling, and I wonder whether we could ever muster the courage and commitment today if we were required resist a similar evil. Today, it seems that every death is reported individually on television and in other news sources. We could not have won the Second World War if they had done that then.

  • My dad went over on D day. He told me many of our boys had this song on their lips when they were killed.

  • @msf60khz The worst thing about war is the tremendous waste of human potential. What did those brave young men, the hope of our nation, the future of our society, deserve to die face down in the mud on the beaches of Normany? The best thing we can do is to resolve that they shall not have died in vain, and to hold strictly accountable any U.S. President, white or black, Democrat or Republican, who would commit the youth of our nation to a war that has no clear objective or plan.

  • Long live England!

    -Love Canada

  • Re: my comment below.... don't get me wrong, I love Vera Lynn.... gorgeous voice, wonderful expression. I think she is everything that Jane Froman wished to be (don't get me wrong here either.... Jane Froman was great... but Vera Lynn is in a class by herself).

  • To all who love this song (as I do) you MUST hear Rosemary Clooney's version. Very pensive and beautiful.... it's like hearing White Cliffs of Dover for the first time.

  • My Mom just passed this Tuesday & she always spoke of this song, she was only 10 when she was sent to the country during the war. This song always made her heart swoon. I love you mom!

  • my father was only a boy when all this was going all we should be proud of the yong done for this country god bless them and i thank them all proud too be brittish

  • I live in Israel and this songs always give me hope that one day both side's leaders' will wise up and finish this stupid war

  • Reminds me of the old joke:GI's,Overpaid ,oversexed and over there.Tommies ,Underpaid, undersexed and under Eisenhower.Great and uplifting song.

  • Each time I see those magnificent white cliffs all along the coasts of Kent and Sussex, especially that most symblic one of all - the Shakespeare Cliff between Dover and Folkestone I think of Vera Lynn and THIS song. It's especially the case when returning to England from France on the ferry back to Dover from Calais and those White Cliffs get nearer and nearer.....Britain's DEFIANT front line of defence during dreadful days of danger and also in former times of similar threats from an enemy.

  • WHO WOULD DISLIKE THIS??? explain yourselves!!!

  • jolly good

  • The Singing of young Vera Lynn is the Voice of authentic courage and Hope. Recorded in some of the darkest days for Her nation, What a wonderful Gift for all generations yet to be, Dearest Vera, Happy Birthday

  • I was playing this on guitar for my mom when she told me this was my grandmother's favorite 78. How can you not cry?

  • this is for all my countrymen....well of my generation anyway.i,m 67.....I,m a Scotty...but this is not about Scotland or England....this is about the men and women weho faught and died .... for me !!!!......and the rest of the world for that matter.... these people think they can take over my country!!!!........then they really don,t know the Brittish people....they think they invented terrosism.....we still have a few people that could teach them ........well that is all folks....

  • fuck the ragheads...

  • They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

    We will remember them.

  • My Mom is from Liverpool. She now has Dimentia, but her eyes always light up when I play this song.

  • @emilypinaud aww :)

  • @emilypinaud aww bless in 14 from Liverpool also and i love this song

  • @emilypinaud Aw thats really sweet :)

  • @emilypinaud My aunt is the same :) When I go visit her she keeps telling me the same thing over and over again.. but when I play some of this.. or frank sinatra.. her eyes light up and she breaks into song and her eyes well up :)

  • @emilypinaud I work in a Seniors Home and sing all the time to the patients. I imagine dementia as having a castle in your head with lots of different rooms - some bad and scary. The right song can direct a person into one of the happy rooms, this song holds a lot of happy memories for the seniors of today. Music is magic! I also sing to people on their death beds. If you find the right words and the right song the passing is gentle, when the last breath is a sigh, rather than a struggle.

  • @emilypinaud so sorry to hear this. I am 13 and love sing Vera Lynn song , would you please play my verson of well meet again for your mum ill put the link on here. Keely xx

  • amen to all these comments. My Mom shared all this music with me and I pray it passes on ...forever and ever....................

  • Love the picture of the cats enjoying the warmth from the old tube radio. (I love old radios and cats.) This song was written by an American (Walter Kent) in solidarity with the British before the US joined the war. Of course bluebirds are native to North America and not Britain..(the bluebird is said to bring happiness) It is a wonderful song expressing a desire for peace but inspiring persaverance and strength against fascism. It is also a pleasant reminder of Anglo-American friendship.

  • this is the kind if lady that the U.K. needs right now .......come on folks have you forgot what this generation of men and woman gave for us!!!!

  • @ejajaajet1997

I agree with you. My parent's generation through this conflict displayed the highest forms of courage and decency.

The world desperately needs to remind itself of these values.

  • Problely the best version ever made.

  • Honor to the greatest generation

  • im 15, and i really like this music. so much better than music these days!

  • @xNatalieXBabesx i TOTALLY agree! i am 16 and i got myself a old record player that plays all kind of old music.. my oldest record is from WW1 it's a long way to tipperary :)

  • Tunnnnnneeeee

  • Thank you for the words of the song, though the words are "thumbs up" not bombs up.

I sang these songs along with the old folks I looked after, time went on and the musical choice of the patients changed to the fifties, I never felt the same emotions joining in with Elvis songs though.

  • Love this version from the past. I'm certain it was a favorite of many.

  • It's beyond me that some folks don't care for this. She's wonderful, and those of us who remember the hard times of WWII, will always love this lady.

  • damn ads

  • damn ads

  • i like pie

  • For our Troops.

  • wow..I wish I was born in this era..

  • @prettykiray I wish that, too!

  • @Eddy2730 :) it seems that you love her too..its nice actually to hear REAL music in this times not like this era--all crap--by the way I was born around 1975 but i do appreciate music of different ages

  • SAAAAAAAAAAAAAFE TUUUUUUUUUNE

  • @princeofpointless Yeah Blud!!!!

  • this is a favourite of mine , my Grandfather sang it to me and later with me as we worked in the fields on the farm , He was in the Elgin Reg, I sang it to my chikdren and grandchildren as a lullaby , now they are singing it to the next generation so I know it will live on for many more years in our hearts. I agree with others , where are the songs for the soldiers of today , what will their children sing ?

  • this is a favourite of mine , my Grandfather sang it to me and later with me as we worked in the fields on the farm , He was in the Elgin Reg, I sang it to my chikdren and grandchildren as a lullaby , now they are singing it to the next generation so I know it will live on for many more years in our hearts

  • wat we got now,, a country full of scum and spongers

  • Notice how today we don't have anymore war songs, even though our boys are fighting in afghanistan. Vera, you gave comfort to the wifes, mothers, sisters and etc, while their boys were dying on the battlefields of Europe, God bless ya. We have nothing like you today, sad.

  • wives not wifes, Afghanistan is capitalized. etc. here should say others. where did you go to school? Pick up a book and start reading, You need to educate yourself.

  • ain't she just the best

  • My Mum was a young woman during the second WW in London - She sang this song almost every day when she was doing housework, When she was in her death bed I sang this to her and it brought her peace and happiness. I love this song for many reasons and find myself humming it during tough times. Tough times never last, but tough people do.

  • @7808521113

    :')

  • @7808521113 That's a beautiful thought, and a lovely story - thanks

  • @7808521113 Same here, during the war I remember my Mum singing this and it always makes me feel so sad but happy if you can understand that.It is so meaningful to all of us Brits of my generation and a lovely song sung by a Great Lady.

  • @7808521113 : Your story brought a tear to my eye. There's nothing like a song to bring back memories, Wha! Your Mom was probably like my Mom: A wholesome & hard worker! "Will Forever Miss"!!

  • @7808521113 During the Second World War, my mother was in the US Army Nurse Corps and was stationed in Iceland, Scotland, and England for a total of 18 months. She always admired the determination and courage of the British people. Fortunately, she was able to return to England in 1990 for a visit, and she enjoyed it very much. On account of wartime precautions, she was unable to visit London during the war, but did so in 1990, as well as other places. She died in 2003 one month short of 81.

  • @7808521113 dude you made my eyes teary

  • @7808521113 Hey, you made me cry, friend. I'm sure your mother was happy at that moment.

  • Los Britanicos mi culo!

  • Lovely song.

The thing is that bluebirds are only found in America, though.

  • @GamagothRULES

Yes, like GI's, they are never found outside of the States. Thank God they flew a little more west than their habitat normally allowed for. As my old granddad used to say, "Hoist the flag and let her fly. Yankee Doodle do or die. (Lucky we had the American Eagle to help us out for both world wars)

  • I was a teenager in 1945 ,and all through wwll that was my favorite song, it gave us hope of victory over Hitler's war machine

  • This makes me sad. But it's beautiful.

  • I'm not british, neither am i born during WW2 but i still love this song!

  • musica para abuelos!!!

  • my mum used to sing this to me

  • bless ya brits....nephew of ROBERT E. MCCUBBIN-29TH INFANTRY-116TH DIVISION....06:35 june 6th 1944 1st wave to hit the beach....Freedom Is Not Free....ron mccubbin louisville, ky

  • Beautiful voice. Beautiful song.

  • god this is beautiful

  • Heartbreakingly simple and truthful singing

  • This sounds exactly like Over the Rainbow with some modifications.

  • I have always loved listening to this song

  • @genise55a Me Too .

  • My dad played piano on this.

  • @APenisWithLegs how cool.

  • Does that ever bring back memories. A world of tea parties with real tea. Parents who actually brought their children up. Now Korea rattles its sabors. And this generation does not believe history repeats its self.......When will it ever end...When will WE ever learn....God bless us all.

  • I miss all my family members who died in this war too, I think the best way we can repay their braveness is to work for a peaceful tomorrow, together.

  • R,I.P grandad love you always XXX

  • It scares me to see all comments here. All patriotic and paying homage to dead soldiers. You all need to listen to Donovan - Universial Soldier instead. The way you guys talk we will never see the end of wars.

  • 'Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn? Remember how she said that we would meet again some sunny day'... I don't think I ever truly understood the horror and sacrifice of Great Britain during WWII until I saw the movie "Atonement". There were some scenes that still resonate today. I think Americans are so lucky to have the Brits as allies and friends...

  • my gran was singing this today i burst into tear it was so beautiful

  • @xXdarkStarXx11 awhhh that so sweet :') x

  • @RooSimo Well said mate!

  • @susharm1 I think its disgusting that you would leave a comment like that.. this song helped our boys win the war. Both my Grandfathers fought for Britian during the war, and I couldnt be more proud and thankful to them, and all the men that lost their lives for us.

You seem very ignorant. If it wasnt for our men, you perhaps wouldnt have the freedom of speach. Like to see you fight for your country..

  • i am 73 jears old and i love ol the songs from dame vera lynn.

i never forget the 1940 and the hunger in holland.

  • Beautiful song!

  • 7 people dont know, what is real music!

  • Comment removed

  • @princeofpointless . Why post such a pointless comment against a song which is loved by millions because it evokes their youth and a time which probably shaped their lives and memories. I visited here to listen to the song to decide whether to have it for my mother's funeral.

  • @trekker2002 shut it

  • @trekker2002 shup ma wasteman

  • I remember being absolutely infatuated with this song when I was a kid, used to ride my bike as fast as I could singing it at the top of my voice, lol.....The tone of her voice, the songs drip nostalgia. Beautiful.

  • My Dad was in WWII in the Battle of the Buldge. And now that he has past this brings back lots of memories.I belong to the VFW and Remember him everyday.

  • @vfw454 my uncle was in the 101 st airborne ,one of the poor battered bastards of bastogne , imagine what would have happened to wallstreet if the shit that;s going on now when on just as the soldiers came home from ww II

  • My Dad was in WWII in the Battle of the Buldge. And now that he has past this brings back lots of memories.I belong to the VFW and Remember hime everyday.

  • I find this song rather moving whatever it's origins. Being born and bred from Kent It's quite unique that many years ago their would of been German planes in the sky above me. I wouldn't mind who sang or wrote the song none the less. I'm a Vera Lynn fan as much as I'm a big fan of the late Norman Wisdom's films etc I just think it's fair people are corrected as to who did what. Noble people will understand. RIP Norm

  • Sadly Sir Norman Wisdom RIP didn't write this song it was an error by ITV's Daybreak who found this incorrect fact on Wikepedia. Vera Lynn spoke to Sky News and confirmed that ITV were wrong. I can't remember if he did but I think Norman covered this in his legendary movies.
