Yes, coocher2009, he was a slave trader who was in a ship heading to Ireland (where he did most of his business) that ran into a storm.
The tune is most definitely Irish, the words are his.
The vast majority of the slaves from Africa where moved through the port of Liverpool and the ships had to go around the north of Ireland to get there.

Beautiful tune Dave, did you know this was originally an old Irish tune.
John Newton put the, now world famous, lyrics to it around 1770.
He had a near death experience on a ship travelling to Ireland and believed God was watching over him.
