That worked for my lab/cattle dog mix. Will not work for the pure breed bluey. He runs after the ball then lays down where it lands so that I have to walk out to him. He used to retrieve perfectly but now he is determined to train me to go to where he decides to put the ball. He is driving my husband and I crazy.
ok i tried it with my golden retriver i put it in my pocket and i threw it and she was running after it she got it started walking aarund and then layed down so i tryed doing it with my other ball and she didnt bother
my dog has major confidence issues, he needs loads of encouragement and seems to be afraid of toys I hope that we can work on this at the park today:) I know I may not be able to get him to fetch but just showing interest in the ball would be a milestone, maybe he will pick it up in his mouth! make him interested in the ball, cheer him on when he picks it up or shows interest, start off playing with the ball and throwing it short distances and make the ball like a special treat praise him when he shows interest, so he will associate the ball with you being happy/pleasing you.
praise him a ton, boost his confidence make him associate the ball with you being happy with him, any sign of him having interest you must pick up on and encourage, just wagging his tail and looking at the ball is a good sign, if he paws it even better, he will be picking it up and taking it away in no time!
My dog is a german sheprard/retirver mix. Fetching/retreiver should be breed into her. Shes an older dog, but whenver I how a ball her ears perk up and ill toss it, shell start going after it like she wants to play, then shell just stop like shes embarassed or something and wont touch it again. What should i do? I adopted her from the OSPCA so is it possible a previous family just didnt teach her properly? I mean, she does go after it but then shell just stop and lay down. Help? D:

I have the same issue as bestman and BBQ! I have a Lab that doesn't come back. I've tried clickers and treats and your method. He will know the treats are around and will not move from my side. Or if he gets the ball, just does not come back. Is it possible we have dogs that will not retrieve? (I am not above admitting I have the only Lab ever that does not retrieve!)
I think i've mentally scarred my dog a little bit when it comes to fetch. She would never do it right so I would constantly be saying no! while playing. Now when we play fetch she'll either get the toy and not come back or she'll get the toy, drop it, and then come back. Anyway to reverse this?
hm i gotta try that. My 4 month old pom is having behavioral issues with dominance. He may or may not run after a ball when i throw it. But he usually doesn't bring it back. He'll stand there and chew it instead of bringing it back.

This is all well, good and very easy to follow, but the question is, and I am having a hard time believing no one else has asked this, is how to go from the two ball trick, to just fetching one ball? I would certainly appreciate some help from someone who knows a good technique. Thank you in advance.
How do you interest a dog in playing fetch? I have a 4 year old terrier who could care less about retrieving a ball. I toss the ball a couple feet away and he just looks at it and then looks at me like... you want me to what? I've tried to interest him by scenting the ball with peanut butter, chicken and various other flavors of the month. But no interest.

i have a labrador retreiver when i throw the ball sometimes she doesn't goes to the ball . sometimes she goes to the ball and starts chewing it and when i call her back she drops the ball and comes to me .
we didn't have to teach our dog fetch. First day we got her when she was a puppy we through a ball and she brought it right back and still loves it. She even drops it at our feet. She's really obsessed with fetch. The second I come home she'll walk over with a ball.
that really helps dude man i think that i will try that i agree take the focus my dog just wants to play tug a war a full breed pit but i think that with this he will learn
That was helpful but my dog has the shortest attention span ever. She's running after it and then she would see something like a bottle cap and then just play with that for twenty minutes.
make him interested in the ball, cheer him on when he picks it up or shows interest, start off playing with the ball and throwing it short distances and make the ball like a special treat praise him when he shows interest, so he will associate the ball with you being happy/pleasing you.
Thank you so much for this advice - it works like a dream! Our dog REALLY enjoyed himself and I'm quite excited about playing in the park tomorrow - fingers crossed he doesn't get bored with it :-)
This really did work. Unfortunately my dog is now wise to this trick and now flat out refuses to drop the ball unless something distracts his attention and he runs off to sniff... leaving his ball THERE for me to collect. We've spent up to 15 minutes just staring in the park and I'm now losing patience. I spent 10 minutes yesterday trying to get him to drop. A stranger walks up, asks him to drop and he does immediately... 3 times... I'm starting to think this is personal :)
the best ive gotten to make my dog fetch is when i take is toy from his mouth. throw . and he comes back with it in his mouth. i wil try this soon once i find a toy he likes.. hes very picky on his toys. ..................yorkie
That's great that you know what she likes. Food can be a strong motivator, and so can petting! Check out a tutorial I made on fetch not long ago. Let me know if it helps :-)
what if my dog doesn't actually come back to me? He just runs to the ball and picks it up. Then he just lies down with it in his mouth. he doesn't come to me.
Hello, My dog will play fetch in the backyard, I'ts taken us 4 years to get to this point!, but she will not play fetch in open spaces, and it is so frustrating because she gets the ball ok, but then either hides it, or just drops it and comes back to me!
Playing fetch in the backyard, I sit on a chair and throw the ball, I do not move away from the chair at all, and she now brings the ball back every time! How come the change in play when we are out and about? can anyone shed light on this?
I forgot to mention that the two ball trick ( you know where you throw one ball and casually let the dog know you have a second ball after it gets the first ball) was the trick that thing that got her fetching in the backyard, but the same trick hasn't worked yet in open spaces!
We have now mastered one ball fetching in the backyard,
Maybe it's because you're no longer sitting so she is confused about what to do? Try standing in your backyard instead of sitting and see if that changes anything.
Does he like playing with toys that rattle? I'm certain I read somewhere that some dogs will chase a ball that rattles, just a suggestion, I hope you find a method that works!
you have to get the dog interested in the toy before throwing it.. act like your really enjoying the toy and make sure your dog is watching.. once it seems like your dog is interested try tossing it a few feet and go from there.. hope my advice works
thats not good, your dog will begin to think its the 'alpha' or leader of you you want it to chase YOU. The dog will begin to disobey and think you need to listen to it! *i hope this helps*
when i throw a ball my husky goes out to get it, brings it back, starts chewing it, and even if i take out another ball he just ignores it and keeps playing with the ball he's got in his mouth lol
when i try to take the ball he's chewing he doesnt offer any resistance, i can take it out of his mouth gently but he wont drop it by my feet though.
anyone has any advice?
great movie though, im sure that will help allot of people.
I've never been all that good with dogs, but I do mostly love them. I'm more of a cat person.
I hope to get a dog regardless of breed (actually, preferably kooikerhondje) and look after it well. It's good if I get some knowledge about training prior to buying a dog.
Okay, my dog is aout 3 years old and he won't fetch. At all. He'll look at the ball, cock his ears up, and just go back to doing what ever. We got him when he was about 2. How can I get him to go get it?
I just got a husky , this is the dogs 3rd home . I was told she is about a year and a half . She will not even look at a ball . She will not pick up a chew toy , stick , ball , rope , ect. . I took one of them rope chew toys , and stuck it down in the bag of treats to try to give it that smell . She still will not put it in her mouth . What can I do to get her to play with chew toys ?
If your dog just sniffs the ball, start with just short distances, no more than 5 feet, once the dog grabs the ball, overly praise them. Gradually increase the distance. Patience is the key to any game played with your dog to train them.
It worked really well but my dog got used to me having two balls. Could you tell me to work it with one ball after the fact that I use two balls please?
The two ball method is great except, never throw the second ball. Use it to distract them from the first ball. Just when you KNOW they are about to drop the other ball use your "drop" command to reinforce your intent. Once they drop the ball praise them, pick up the SAME ball (let them see you pick it up) and do it again. All dogs respond well to OVER excitement don't be afraid to look silly for the benefit of your dog.
my dog likes to steal things and put them in collections. shes a collector. we call her bat cos she looks like a bat and she always takes what she thinks as of mine. so when i throw the ball she will go get it and hide it somewhere so i cant get it. shes very, VERY playful and if i try catch her and get it she will run off, the only thing is she likes food...
Hey Amazing Dog Training Man! I'm positively sure that will work but I have a huge problem! My backyard is huge, and when I throw the toy, he runs around, not returning to me and when I try to bring him back with a treat, he drops the toy and comes for the treat. What should I do? I cannot bring the dog in the house for an enclosed room because its not allowed since theres a baby around. What should I do?
How do I get my dog (lab mix) to actually pick up the damn ball in the first place? I will throw the ball, she runs to it, sniffs it a few times, then looks at me like I'm crazy if I think she's going to pick it up and return it. Retriever my ass!
Pick it up with your mouth first, then run around with the ball in your mouth, show her how fun it is. Let her throw the ball a couple of times and you run after it. This will show her that it can be quite fun. lol
I think maybe i'll have to try the food rewards with my dog (pit/lab mix) because shes a little hard willed and will just drop the ball 5-10 yards in front of me and stare at me because she knows i have the second ball...after about 3 minutes of waiting, she finally got tired and brought eh ball to me though, but treats might speed the whole process up which would be nice.
I tried this... When he dropped the ball away from me, I started playing with the other ball and he came over, interested. When he didn't go get the other ball that he dropped, I put away the ball I was playing with. That caused him to go back and get the other ball, where I started playing with my ball, and he dropped his ball at my feet. Then I threw my ball and repeated. It WORKS! It's only been 2 days and we can play fetch for 30mins! I can't wait until I only need one ball! AMAZING!
i have a chihuahua cross jack russel and when i throw the ball, he chases it but when he gets up to the ball, he just looks at it and walks back to me. what do i do?
i trow the tennis ball away and my wolfdog almost 1years old run and takes it but the problem is that he doesnt give it back to me :( pls if u have some ideas about how i can make him give it back to me i would apriciate it... thnx :P
My dog will fetch and always drop the ball about 5-10 metres in front of me and just stay there and stare at it in front of him. I don't know how to make him come all the way. If I make him come he comes but leaves the ball where he dropped it. I've stood there for about 5 minutes before and he just stared at the ball didn't move. Any suggestions to make him bring it all the way?
Agreed! I have the same problem with my dog. She will fetch the ball and bring it within 20 feet of me, and then drop it without bringing it back to me. Help?
I have a baby Rotti, and if I toss a toy for him to fetch, he just barks and slowly walks up to it and brings it to his bed. I only had him for 2 days though.
yea but how do i actually get him to go after the ball? mine border collie is 9 weeks and i just got him 2 days ago so i guess he's still very young but i want to teach him everything asap. any tips to make him actually go get anything? mine just sits there and looks at me the whole time when throw something
That's why you need to give him Food as a reward when he gets the Ball. Call him back then he'll come to you and let go of the ball and give him the treat :)
I'm going to go try this right now.. Usually I get frustrated getting the ball back and stop playing, but now I'm going to try this. Hope it works, Thanks!
lol guys every one that has truoble doing this then get a flipping toy or ball that the dog likes!! and then give it to him!!
and when the dog comes to u try pulling the ball way from his mouth if that dont work give him a treat and take the ball and or get another ball with u like eric did hes... if the dog dont come to u then tell him to come.... try it it worked for all my 7 dogs
In order to get your dog interested in retrieving, toss the ball just a foot or two away...not all the way across the yard.
Smearing a little cheese on the ball might also help.
I've also been taught to get all excited and make a big deal out of the fetch game. I'll use a high pitched voice and say "hup, hup, hup...get the ball...hup, hup, hup" while juggling the ball.
If you act excited about playing fetch, the dog will too.
i start using this mans tips .

whats if your dog runs to hte ball and comess back without it or if you throw him the second ball he wont fetcg because you have his other ball? :)
dorothee98 1 year ago
Woot best video ever taught my dog to fetch in seconds and he is usully the hardest dog to teach because of his short attention span.
SepherClaw 2 years ago
That was helpful but my dog has the shortest attention span ever. She's running after it and then she would see something like a bottle cap and then just play with that for twenty minutes.
Econon1 2 years ago
Working with two fetch items instead of one, that is a wonderful tip! Thank you! I'm going to try that right away. :D

make him interested in the ball, cheer him on when he picks it up or shows interest, start off playing with the ball and throwing it short distances and make the ball like a special treat praise him when he shows interest, so he will associate the ball with you being happy/pleasing you.

Thank you so much for this advice - it works like a dream! Our dog REALLY enjoyed himself and I'm quite excited about playing in the park tomorrow - fingers crossed he doesn't get bored with it :-)

use somthin that intrests him that he likes not what u want him to play with then eventuelly switch
ThePeefer94 2 years ago

BrendanHoag and sundalo47.
Your dogs can be adults, so they don't want to play. I've got a 5months old dog, he loves playing:)

MY DOG HAS NO INTEREST IN BALLS, TOYS, or ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER. SHE KNOWS HOW TO EAT, AND GET PET. WHAT STEPS CAN I TAKE TO TRAIN HER!?!?!?!?
BrendanHoag 2 years ago 2

1blockhead1 2 years ago
I forgot to mention that the two ball trick ( you know where you throw one ball and casually let the dog know you have a second ball after it gets the first ball) was the trick that thing that got her fetching in the backyard, but the same trick hasn't worked yet in open spaces!
We have now mastered one ball fetching in the backyard,
Thanks!
1blockhead1 2 years ago
Maybe it's because you're no longer sitting so she is confused about what to do? Try standing in your backyard instead of sitting and see if that changes anything.
SheSoTalented216 2 years ago
Try only throwing the ball a short distance, at first. If your throw it far away, the dog's more likely to drop it or wander off.
ketharin 2 years ago
heyy can you help me my dog doesnt even go after the ball !
just like you said about the golden retreiver!
and he tries to bite my fingers so how to tell himm that it s wrong!!??
egyptio123 2 years ago
Does he like playing with toys that rattle? I'm certain I read somewhere that some dogs will chase a ball that rattles, just a suggestion, I hope you find a method that works!
1blockhead1 2 years ago
you have to get the dog interested in the toy before throwing it.. act like your really enjoying the toy and make sure your dog is watching.. once it seems like your dog is interested try tossing it a few feet and go from there.. hope my advice works

I wonder if it's bad to chase a dog? There's been time's that I've chased dogs because I wanted to myself, and I'm wondering if that's bad?
Lillsneakynun 2 years ago
i know thats the only way i play with my dog. i chase her while she runs away with something.
Ichristensen96 2 years ago
thats not good, your dog will begin to think its the 'alpha' or leader of you you want it to chase YOU.

ME TOO dude, idk how to get them to drop it O.o'
piestroodle 2 years ago
Thank you.

What can I do to get her to play with chew toys ?

my dog will NOT pick up the ball help he just sniffs it
funkywizarddude 2 years ago
If your dog just sniffs the ball, start with just short distances, no more than 5 feet, once the dog grabs the ball, overly praise them. Gradually increase the distance. Patience is the key to any game played with your dog to train them.
killerb04 2 years ago 2
Thanks a lot!
It worked really well but my dog got used to me having two balls. Could you tell me to work it with one ball after the fact that I use two balls please?
Happyfeet1217 2 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
The two ball method is great except, never throw the second ball.

Retriever my ass!
usamericanz 2 years ago 2
Pick it up with your mouth first, then run around with the ball in your mouth, show her how fun it is. Let her throw the ball a couple of times and you run after it. This will show her that it can be quite fun. lol

I think maybe i'll have to try the food rewards with my dog (pit/lab mix) because shes a little hard willed and will just drop the ball 5-10 yards in front of me and stare at me because she knows i have the second ball...after about 3 minutes of waiting, she finally got tired and brought eh ball to me though, but treats might speed the whole process up which would be nice.
nerdariostomp 2 years ago
I tried this... When he dropped the ball away from me, I started playing with the other ball and he came over, interested. When he didn't go get the other ball that he dropped, I put away the ball I was playing with. That caused him to go back and get the other ball, where I started playing with my ball, and he dropped his ball at my feet. Then I threw my ball and repeated. It WORKS! It's only been 2 days and we can play fetch for 30mins! I can't wait until I only need one ball! AMAZING!

Any suggestions to make him bring it all the way?
adamroakley 3 years ago
Agreed! I have the same problem with my dog. She will fetch the ball and bring it within 20 feet of me, and then drop it without bringing it back to me. Help?

I have the exact same problem with my German Shepherd! I'd really like to play fetch with him, but this gets in the way.

I have a baby Rotti, and if I toss a toy for him to fetch, he just barks and slowly walks up to it and brings it to his bed. I only had him for 2 days though.

i can get my puppy to get the ball but he wont drop it at all she just runs as far away in my fenceed-in yard as she can and then chews it up
oscarsanders07 3 years ago
That's why you need to give him Food as a reward when he gets the Ball. Call him back then he'll come to you and let go of the ball and give him the treat :)
anac0nda 3 years ago
I'm going to go try this right now.. Usually I get frustrated getting the ball back and stop playing, but now I'm going to try this. Hope it works, Thanks!
Jaythn 3 years ago
lol guys every one that has truoble doing this then get a flipping toy or ball that the dog likes!! and then give it to him!!
and when the dog comes to u try pulling the ball way from his mouth if that dont work give him a treat and take the ball and or get another ball with u like eric did hes... if the dog dont come to u then tell him to come.... try it it worked for all my 7 dogs
1hit0k0 3 years ago
In order to get your dog interested in retrieving, toss the ball just a foot or two away...not all the way across the yard.
Smearing a little cheese on the ball might also help.
I've also been taught to get all excited and make a big deal out of the fetch game. I'll use a high pitched voice and say "hup, hup, hup...get the ball...hup, hup, hup" while juggling the ball.
If you act excited about playing fetch, the dog will too.
