Why didn't he talk about how 95% of black voters voted for Obama? Surely racism had something to do with that to. And no doubt, there were many whites who voted for him because of racial guilt. All in all, the elite have us where they want us. The average American is so ignorant when it comes to politics. They assume they're making a logical choice but when asked what they think they're candidate will bring, all they can remember are those hypnotic words "HOPE" and "CHANGE". RIP America.
I watch a lot of these Ted talks. I judge each one by how it held my interest and did not repeat information I already was aware of --- this one was great. Thank you.Bill
this lecture has a "sanitized or white washed" view of racism (sorry no pun intended) about how people "feel about" other ethnic groups- is that the only thing racism is? I'm kind of amazed how you can talk about race/voting and not talk about systems/institutions/power Did anyone else find that odd?
@itsacomputer well the talk is on race affecting voting so no....but other than that, if this was a hour long talk then yeah I would but considering it is only 10 minute clip you kind of have to limit the topic range.
There is no such thing as race, by the way. If I asked you what it meant you might think you know it intuitively, but you don't. You then might look it up and us whatever you find as a definition.
We are one species, homo sapiens, and all over the worlds we have slightly different visual characteristics based on recent adaptations to slightly different habitats. But the boundaries that we draw, the categories that we create, are entirely socially constructed, culturally and historically relative.
Yeah, its not about how many white people voted against Obama just because he is black. It's about how many black people voted for Obama just because he is black.
Why does this "study"only cover racial attitudes against Obama, and not racial attitudes toward him? And why are people so messed up as to vote on the basis of appearance and not the standards and actions of the candidate? This is a terrible statement about the intelligence of voters.
Since everybody else in the comments section is making up statistics, I'll join in.
120% of the black people in America voted for Obama, 99% of which did so based on race, while the remaining 80% liked his middle name. Meanwhile, 90% of women voted for McPalin, likely because she shot a moose.
Dude, shut up, talking like that is how horrible things with the Nazis started. If you think there's conspiracy against you it's just so you can find an excuse for your being a failure.
No...He's not essentially saying that Jews and Liberals should determine where white people should live. You need to watch the video again.
He's saying that neighborhoods should be designed in such a way that is conducive for more interaction with other people around them and not just 3-5 households in your culdesac. I think you need to stop fearing diversity. Besides, this isn't the 1920's. We White people have the internet if we wan't to "congregate" lmao.
I'm not sure I understand your position. I'm white and nothing he said gave me the feeling that I've been marginalized. You actually think it's unhealthy for exposure to diversity? I don't think he's trying to devise a system to make SURE that white people can never live with other whites. I think he's suggesting that we should build environments that PROMOTE interaction with others. Something tells me you have a fear of this more than a rational reason to oppose this.
Nate is a TEDster now huh? I remember clicking on fivethirtyeight during the election before the site blew up. Now he's a regular on news shows and more. Talk about rags to riches. I'm envious.
And although you are talking about "liberal" whites voting from him, you might want to take a look at the overwhelming amount of former republican voters who voter for Obama. But, of course that would require ACTUAL research and having an opnion of your own.
Well I think there is a possibility they voted for him because he taught constitutional law. A document which is the backbone of our country, which has been in a state of erosion for years. Or maybe, because he not only graduated Harvard, he also was editor of the world-renowned harvard law review. Or maybe it was because the other candidate graduated 5th from the bottom of his class at his academy.
Why would race affect whites more than any other color? Is it genetic? Plus I will take you up on a modified bet. As stated it's meaningless. I would bet a greater percentage of blacks voted for Obama becasue he was black than whites voted for McCain cause he's white.
Since 1964 80% of black people have voted for Democratic candidate for president, in 2008 94% of blacks voted for Obama, that's 14% switch. 15% of whites surveyed said race had something to do with there decision. In 2007 Hillary Clinton was the leading candidate among blacks. So if Hillary ran against McCain, Hillary wins among blacks, and if Black McCain vs. Obama= Obama wins. And if McCain vs. White Obama= Obama wins. So it comes down to party loyalty.
How come he didn't show how black people voted for Obama because he was black? Why so one sided? Why are whites portrayed as racist? I love how he wanted to show us how tolerant his neighborhood was BTW, hysterical.
I don't think he's saying that only white can be racist. I think what he is trying to say is that race probably effects whites more than any other color. I bet the number of whites who voted for McCain because he's white out weighs the blacks who voted for Obama because he's black. Anyway everything is bias.
@beagle8boy He wasnt talking about black racism or white racism. he was talking about racism and its roots. The voting trends and polls results was to show where racism creeps up in different ways in which it does. Try to understand what people are trying to say before you judge them.
I thought White Flight only applied to Whites living in area's with rowdy blacks, not blacks in general. But wasn't the major factor contributed racial discrimination? Anyway i think one of the reasons a lot of whites voted for him was because they wanted to remove the stigma of racism they have to deal with daily or something like that. I'm not saying your wrong, i'm just stating my opinion. I hope this makes sense because i'm slightly out of it, if it doesn't tell me and i'll clear it up.
Why the hell did TED let this muppet on? I feel insulted by this video. As an Irish man living in his native land I am sick of this anti white (all whites are racists) bullplop. He should have shown both sides of the divide instead of just showing the white side. This kind of crap effects us all. The mentality that only white people are self serving is ridiculous. We are all self serving! They should take this down. This kind of half arsed talk is racist in itself.
Is he bringing anything new to the table? more than making whites the center of this topic? Every race that doesn't interact with other races is more likely not to vote for them or accept intermarriage.
What the hell is wrong with you? "the Jewish Problem" and he has no hatred to caucasians, if anyone has a mental illness and is promoting genocide it's you. He's just stating facts and statistics.
this is dumb because he's still making an argument which involves whites vs. OTHER races.....as if the white race is a thing on its own when white is just another race, not only that....white is ill defined....by white do you mean white-looking or european?....because there are white-looking people in places that aren't europe like south america or africa or middle east, but they're not "white"....so he has to define his races a bit ore clearly.
what about reverse-discrimination? What about the black people that didnt vote for mccain, and voted for obama merely because he's black?
less than 5% of black people actually knew what Obama's campaign was all about and how he was actually going to change this country...no, only because he's black.
this country is so shitty because of the stupid people that live in it
You're claiming that most Black people voted for Obama because he's Black.
I'm telling you that Black people have usually voted democratic, regardless of the color of the democratic candidate.
If the election had been between Hillary Clinton (dem) and Michael Steele (rep), are you arguing that 90% of Black people will suddenly vote Republican b/c Steele is Black? Right, I didn't think so. There's the hole in your "reverse-discrimination" rant.
"actually, I would argue that they would vote for Steele..."
And I would argue that you're either brain dead or immensely dense. Eitherway, this discussion is no longer worth my time. You're a stubborn bigot out to find someone to hear your rant, without any serious intent of engaging in an honest discussion. You don't plan to change your mind about this, you never did. You just wanted someone to reply to your posts, someone to give you some attention.
this man is saying that white people with no exposure to blacks will vote white
my argument is that he did not tell the other side of the story... just like with white people,
black people would vote for a black candidate just because he's black, and in this case even MORE LIKELY because Obama was going to be the FIRST black president, and it's this sudden uproar that forces black people and other minorities to vote for Barrack, without any knowledge of government whatsoever.
2) Tediousness: As this is a question that cannot be answered by introspection, the only way to answer it correctly will be to look up the history of the democratic party, which will itself require you to make arbitrary judgments on which presidential candidates could be appropriately considered a "democrat" in today's sense of the word, given that the democrat and the republican party were once the same party.
If you're interested in asking ridiculous, imbecilic, irrelevant questions, then please, let me lead the way.
If you will provide me an answer to my question, then I will take the pains of doing the historical research to find for you, EXACTLY how many "democrats" have been in the final running for presidency.
Question: How many angels can stand on the head of a pin?
(N.B: Answers such as "0, b/c angels don't exist" are not acceptable since it is impossible to prove they don't).
Please tell me, how old are you? It seems that I'm just wasting my time with an incompetent 8th grader who thinks he understands a thing or two about presidential politics. I do not have the time to engage in silly banters with a bunch of kids....
because you're being a douche about it, probably. you both have access to the same internet resources, so if you want the answer to your question figure it out yourself (if you don't already know). the socratic method doesn't work as well on the internet as it does in real life. just take whatever the answer is and apply it to whatever point you are trying to make. HOW you make the point is irrelevant. just make it. stop trying to act like some trivial number makes a difference.
"just note that, you still have not answered my legitimate question. why not? "
Actually, I did. I pointed out that it is not a legitimate question. If you will like to prove to me that it is, then may be I'll take 2 hrs from my time tomorrow and look through the political history section of my local library so that I can come back to youtube and tell you how many democratic presidential finalists have existed since the inception of the United States of America.
Now, since you're such a fucktard, you probably understood none of what I said below. Here, the # of 50. Its my best estimate of the # of democrats who have been in the final presidential race. I've excluded people in the Democratic republican party, and those who were states' rights democrats.
There, that's the answer to your completely irrelevant, pointless question. Now it's your turn to answer mine: How many angels can stand on the head of a pin?
* # is 50. Oh, and you will be best advised not to talk about my spelling, considering that I could easily find the same faults in your posts. Hell, I'll even go further and talk about your inappropriate use of the comma in your last post. Hopefully we won't have to go that far.

its a shame people voted on race....its like they never heard dr king.....he said "i have a dream where one day little black kids will not be judged by the colour or their skin but by the content of their character".....
99% of blacks voted black based on race with little regard to issues...
Many whites and hispanics voted for both Black and white many based on partisan issues and a few on race...but racial voting came predominately from blacks this is a fact...despite the history of the republican party freeing the slaves and the historical connection between the KKK and the southern democrats...It seems today that government dependance is the new slavery and ironically its racially motivated by the left wing!
Roughly the same percentage of Blacks who voted for Obama when he ran for President, also voted for Clinton and pretty much every other democrat. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why: The contemporary democratic party is more sensitive to the needs of Black people that is the conservative party.
You would have to look at who the black vote went to in the past. If it has recently been strongly democratic then how can you say that Obama votes were a race issue?
Quick search, 90% of the black vote went to Gore. So 9 of 10 who voted Republican changed by 2008 but how many changed in the population at large? Well the change in spread was about 7%.
So, in the black vote an extra 5.5 in 100 swapped sides compared to the whole population. Significant but not as much as you'd like to think.
they voted for clinton because of public assistance dependance and to a greater degree Obama because of both race and public assistance...there is no secret to this only in contemporary politics dependance is the new slavery as the democrats who control most inner cities have shown in 40+ yrs of liberal results and public programs...thats why the inner cities are what they are and why they all have democratic politicians in charge. Thats not my opinion just the truth!
And rich people may choose to vote Republican because they think they will pay lower taxes and will be allowed to avoid them through loopholes or illegal means. They probably hate the dirty poor who carry disease which is why they live in ghetto suburbs in big houses with gates. The Republicans trap them into voting for them.
People vote for the candidates who they believe will do more for them. Wow huge revelation. Is it so wrong for the less well off to want healthcare, better education...?
As a 32 year old White male... who is fairly educated... I voted for Barack Obama mainly because the guy had little to no competition at all. John McCain did not represent me or the things that I wanted for the future of America. Barack Obama did.
On top of that Barack was articulative, eloquent and very rarely resorted to the Karl Rove style of attack politics.
He made his points... gave evidence to support them and ran on a platform based entirely on "change".
Wow! This is so uplifting. It's great to think that there are active steps that can be taken to decrease the likelihood of racism in future generations.
He calls the election an experiment... really? I'd say their were infinite amounts of variables, what was the control? what was being tested? It was a historical event, not an experiment.
This whole talk is pseudo science. The social sciences aren't the natural sciences, you can't use pure empiricism and think you're going to get meaningful and correct correlations.
You may want to look up to word experiement. Specifically the term "Natural experiment" applies in this case. There are natural sciences where these natural experiments play a major role as well such as geology where producing the conditions in a lab is not feasible.
As someone who studies the natural sciences I think I understand your problem with the use of the word experiment but it is not used inappropriately here.
If racism were highly correlated with lack of education (which I am sure it is), then that would suggest that blacks are more racist than whites because they are more poorly educated as a whole.
there is a variable that can contradict that statement; more blacks live in cities, compared to whites, and because of that, more blacks interact with other races in some way, when compared to whites as a whole. With that said, there is a greater chance of a black person accepting other races over a white person, because of the fact that they interact with a greater diversity of races.. but again
you forget that this was the first true black competitor, so that fact was a given; remember Rev Al Sharpton did run for president once, and he never even made it past the primaries. If a Jewish candidate popped up who had all the same qualities as Obama, I guarantee 95% of the Jewish vote would have voted for that candidate, on the fact that the majority of the our past presidents and candidates were Christian or Catholic...
it doesn't negate the fact, every single american present came out of a white woman's womb.Barack is white as well.and the entire electorate is/was aware of it.
I find it incredibly intellectually dishonest to do a presentation such as this, without even referring to the extreme amount of "liberals" who voted for Obama simply because he's black. It's as if they don't register that it's just as racist as voting against him because of his skin color. "Liberals" always obsess about skin color, because of their strong inclination to group thinking, as opposed to free thinking. "Affirmative action" is vile racism.
You need to think about what you just wrote a little bit. You can't assume that those 'liberals' who voted for Obama, voted for him just because he's black, maybe they voted for him for the fact that it was going to be a monumental moment for this country, and trust me, it would have been the same if Hillary Clinton was the Dem candidate. Liberals are romanticists...
This guy is retarded...America's flavor of racism is unique in the world. Moreover, it cannot be resolved through 'intermixing'. I hated living in the U.S. and I hope the country gets nuked by Islamic terrorists.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah, and some left Africa and evolved into a civilized society. There is not ONE safe black city in the world where the black population is over 20%. Meanwhile there are THOUSANDS of safe white cities. Also, an average 40,000+ whites are raped by blacks each year in the USA. Meanwhile LESS THAN TEN blacks are raped by whites.
So yes- race matters. If yo don't think so, go move to a black neighborhood and tell me how you feel after a month... if you're still alive.
you are right- violence is a problem in all societies, with all races of people. It just happens to be 10-20X higher with black people, and no one wants to admit it.
Actually, there have been objective studies which concluded that, controlling for race and all other factors, it is single-motherhood that is the strongest link to criminality. Unfortunately, American welfare policy has been devoted to promoting single-motherhood, especially among the minority communities.
This is RIDDLED with inaccuracies. This guy is a doofus. Rural doesn't mean FARMER. This guy is talking about rural areas but I don't think he's ever been to one. He's basically saying "since I am from a city, I am better than you." Look at Vermont, a very rural state, where did they rank on race affecting their vote? I like the idea of inter-state school exchange programs, though
Andres Duany of the New Urbanism movement has been talking since the 70s-80s about how this suburban sprawl affects our social lives. It is amazing though not surprising that this also may have political extensions
Silver seems to forget/ignore/not address an obvious point any statistician/economist should notice. People can and do self-select into neighborhoods based on their level of racism.
Consider the following hypothesis:
Integrated neighborhoods aren't more tolerant because people interact with other races, they are more tolerant because only tolerant people will choose to live there. If you are racist you will prefer to remain in Arkansas.
Forced integration may do nothing to prevent racism.
Although that may be true to some extent, I do not believe that to be the case overall. Not everybody can choose what neighbourhood to live in based on desirability alone, but more so in terms of economic feasability.
I'm amused by all the angry posters who don't know who Nate Silver is. He correctly predicted the outcome of 49 out of 50 states in the presidential election, and correctly called every decisive Senate seat. He's a brilliant statistical analyst.
We would have a perfect and just future if presidents or congressman are to be elected based on hardcore TESTS like every other employment tests.
A president or a congressman should only be elected if he/she passed all moral, ethic, race, science, technology, economy, foreign affairs, diplomacy, Military, Human right tests etc..
Wiki- A subspecies cannot be recognized in isolation: a species will either be recognized as having no subspecies at all or two or more, never just one. - Where did you get that 5% DNA difference. Hadn't read that one.
I think you're being a bit sensitive. Out dated or not we describe ourselves and others with the word race. I heard the mechanics of how the election happened. What did you hear?
Err..the definition in biology of subspecies implies a greater than 5% difference in genetic material. Humans are always between 3% and 5%.
I never describe myself as part of a race. don't know if it's a cultural thing or not, but here in Portugal it's offensive to say someone is of a given race.
I agree that people with friends family or neighbours of other cultural backgrounds can be more open minded, but is it all about the neighbours? I never had coloured neighbours, and I'm no racist.
freeserb, you are quite racist yourself with your theories about "zionists".
Anyways, it is clear that Nate Silver doesn't really analyze this in a balanced way. I have met some black voters who have said they voted for Obama mainly because of race. So it goes both ways, most Americans are racialist (perhaps not racist) to varying extent.
perhaps a more interesting lens to view this "data" would be the question "How could it be that this country elected an 'other than white' President -given the 'widely' held belief that the majority white population is hopelessly racist?"
I guess a suggestion to the TED people would be to ask presenters to explore the question "Are there any positive forces in play here?" -Thinking about it now, this is the worst TEDtalk I've ever watched, but I'm glad it's failures can be guide for others. A lot of people cherish the TED venue- thank you.
Blacks Law Dictionary points to this historical fact when it defines "marriage license" as, "A license or permission granted by public authority to persons who intend to intermarry." "Intermarry" is defined in Black's Law Dictionary as, "Miscegenation; mixed or interracial marriages."
Several comments about him breaking out and studying the white vote. He did this because it's still the dominant voting block and part of the reason we got the results we got.
How some people get that he's saying only whites are racist is beyond me and want an axe to grind.
I'd bet all races have the same percentage of racism and is less important to this particular discussion due to the raw numbers. Haters have you read his data?
Ironically, his implication that only whites are racist is undone by his own research.
If education is apparently the source of racism as he proposes, wouldn't blacks be the most racist of all? Since they have a lower education on average?
Why is this moron even giving a presentation? His propositions and arguments could be ripped to shreds in seconds.
Utterly disgraceful. Pejoratively speaking, this dumbarse is beyond a reject.
Seems you don't understand the concept of correlation. But probably uneducated black people are more inclined to be racist than educated black people.
I understand correlation perfectly. However, you don't.
"Probably" in your statement is purely opinional. I think what you meant to say was "violent" rather than "racist". There would be many blacks that are very racist, yet civilised due to education, so withhold their racist tendancies.
There are far too many variables and assumptions for this presenter's work to even be considered scientific evidence.
He's honestly trying to come to a conclusion on racism from voting statistics?
The fact that there is correlation doesn't mean that this correlation is uniform among all groups. But that isn't even relevant since this presentation doesn't talk about general correlation but studies only whites. And it's straightforward enough that you can reach your own conclusions, IE if you tell a pollsters race was a big factor and you voted for McCain I don't know what is scientifically responsible to conclude but I do know what a reasonable conclusion would be.
CNN exit polls indicate that 53 percent of the nineteen percent of people who considered race as a factor voted for Obama. 47 percent voted for McCain. That indicates that Obama's race won him more votes than it lost him, which means that there's more racism against whites than against blacks.
The flawed, inadequate studies were only conducted on the white population?
So only white people can be racist? Is that what this scumbag is saying?
In fact what this fool has said is beyond incorrect.
Lack of education causes racism? On the contrary.
It was my education that helped me to research criminal statistics on various races and come to a solid conclusion based on the evidence that African-Americans commit crimes at a rate 6 TIMES HIGHER THAN WHITES!
The talk wasn't bad, although I agree with maceike in that it really isn't new information. It's understood that lack of education and lack of diverse social interaction leads to reverting to primitive tribalistic instincts.
Someone commented that he's assuming only whites are racist. I disagree, he was examining factors associated with decisions white voters made. He didn't comment on black voters at all, let alone make assertions about them. Of course racism exists everywhere.
This man is not a scientist. He is a propagandist. How many blacks and whites voted FOR Obama because he is black? I am sure he is pleased that "White Guilt" has become an effective tool. The most isolated people are well educated white liberals. The election came down to Marxism vs. Capatilism. And the Marxist won. "Racism" provided the cover to Obama's Marxism. This has been nothing but a slur. If you believe in the Constitution and personal liberty, you must be a bigot?
i think the internet brings new enlightenment, people exchange conversation of information with a mix of ideas and thoughts. so race becomes obsolete when you have the open source information left for everyone.
Nate is a master with the data. Loved his '08 election analysis, it was superb. His web site is 538 spelled out. Google 538 will get you there. Really quality work and shows you all the internals if you want to see them. A real pro and I don't feel like I'm getting "adjusted" by him.
You gotta love a smart geek with an audience. Not only can he discuss racial issues, Nate Silver has predicted the outcomes of various sports seasons with an accuracy that is downright scary.
If you had 3 months of compulsory military service in the US you could also have the population scattered all over the place and interact with people they otherwise wouldn't know.
Apart from that, there's a study made by a teacher at Lund University's Political Science studying the hostility towards minority groups and how many of the minority lived there (the less they were, the more prejudices and higher hostility towards them)
I was wondering if you could direct me to a site Memubitsu that would give some findings of the discrimination Study?
I can tell you from personal experience that discrimination takes place within any minority group in any living thing on this earth. All whites discriminate against the poorest white, the fattest white, or the richest white for that matter. Same way with a local deer population the females discriminate against a small group in the flock and they don't reproduce.

Sophisticated analysis of the election and GSS data by someone who has already demonstrated a profound understanding of survey methodology.
Clearly it will not appeal to or affect those with the racist point of view he is talking about, but that's not a surprise.
Hopefully, intelligence (coupled with compassion) will win out in the LONG run.
Keep it up, Nate.

And although you are talking about "liberal" whites voting from him, you might want to take a look at the overwhelming amount of former republican voters who voter for Obama. But, of course that would require ACTUAL research and having an opnion of your own.
zenial99 2 years ago
Well I think there is a possibility they voted for him because he taught constitutional law. A document which is the backbone of our country, which has been in a state of erosion for years. Or maybe, because he not only graduated Harvard, he also was editor of the world-renowned harvard law review. Or maybe it was because the other candidate graduated 5th from the bottom of his class at his academy.

Why would race affect whites more than any other color? Is it genetic? Plus I will take you up on a modified bet. As stated it's meaningless. I would bet a greater percentage of blacks voted for Obama becasue he was black than whites voted for McCain cause he's white.
beagle8boy 2 years ago 2
Since 1964 80% of black people have voted for Democratic candidate for president, in 2008 94% of blacks voted for Obama, that's 14% switch. 15% of whites surveyed said race had something to do with there decision. In 2007 Hillary Clinton was the leading candidate among blacks. So if Hillary ran against McCain, Hillary wins among blacks, and if Black McCain vs. Obama= Obama wins. And if McCain vs. White Obama= Obama wins. So it comes down to party loyalty.

Black people already vote for democrats at about 90% anyway, regardless of race.

What only whites can be racist? I wonder were there any black voters for whom race was an issue?
Because of this limited focus I find this 'study' useless. Of course race is a factor but only for white voters?
Take off your blinders, Nate. Your bias is showing.
beagle8boy 2 years ago 2
I don't think he's saying that only white can be racist. I think what he is trying to say is that race probably effects whites more than any other color. I bet the number of whites who voted for McCain because he's white out weighs the blacks who voted for Obama because he's black. Anyway everything is bias.

There's the hole in your "reverse-discrimination" rant.

this man is saying that white people with no exposure to blacks will vote white
my argument is that he did not tell the other side of the story... just like with white people,
black people would vote for a black candidate just because he's black, and in this case even MORE LIKELY because Obama was going to be the FIRST black president, and it's this sudden uproar that forces black people and other minorities to vote for Barrack, without any knowledge of government whatsoever.

"how many democrats have been in the final running for presidency? please tell me "

RantKid 2 years ago
I didn't answer for a number of reasons:
1) Relevance: What does that have to do with "reverse discrimination"?
Mrmoc7 2 years ago
2) Tediousness: As this is a question that cannot be answered by introspection, the only way to answer it correctly will be to look up the history of the democratic party, which will itself require you to make arbitrary judgments on which presidential candidates could be appropriately considered a "democrat" in today's sense of the word, given that the democrat and the republican party were once the same party.
Mrmoc7 2 years ago
If you're interested in asking ridiculous, imbecilic, irrelevant questions, then please, let me lead the way.
If you will provide me an answer to my question, then I will take the pains of doing the historical research to find for you, EXACTLY how many "democrats" have been in the final running for presidency.

HOW you make the point is irrelevant. just make it. stop trying to act like some trivial number makes a difference.

DK0526 2 years ago
Roughly the same percentage of Blacks who voted for Obama when he ran for President, also voted for Clinton and pretty much every other democrat. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why: The contemporary democratic party is more sensitive to the needs of Black people that is the conservative party.
Mrmoc7 2 years ago
You would have to look at who the black vote went to in the past. If it has recently been strongly democratic then how can you say that Obama votes were a race issue?
Quick search, 90% of the black vote went to Gore. So 9 of 10 who voted Republican changed by 2008 but how many changed in the population at large? Well the change in spread was about 7%.
So, in the black vote an extra 5.5 in 100 swapped sides compared to the whole population. Significant but not as much as you'd like to think.
Saddamuel 2 years ago
they voted for clinton because of public assistance dependance and to a greater degree Obama because of both race and public assistance...there is no secret to this only in contemporary politics dependance is the new slavery as the democrats who control most inner cities have shown in 40+ yrs of liberal results and public programs...thats why the inner cities are what they are and why they all have democratic politicians in charge. Thats not my opinion just the truth!
DK0526 2 years ago

And that's what we're getting!

He calls the election an experiment... really? I'd say their were infinite amounts of variables, what was the control? what was being tested? It was a historical event, not an experiment.
This whole talk is pseudo science. The social sciences aren't the natural sciences, you can't use pure empiricism and think you're going to get meaningful and correct correlations.
jnort122 2 years ago
You may want to look up to word experiement. Specifically the term "Natural experiment" applies in this case. There are natural sciences where these natural experiments play a major role as well such as geology where producing the conditions in a lab is not feasible.
As someone who studies the natural sciences I think I understand your problem with the use of the word experiment but it is not used inappropriately here.
Spacemonkey2084 2 years ago 2
If racism were highly correlated with lack of education (which I am sure it is), then that would suggest that blacks are more racist than whites because they are more poorly educated as a whole.
jbz7890 2 years ago
there is a variable that can contradict that statement; more blacks live in cities, compared to whites, and because of that, more blacks interact with other races in some way, when compared to whites as a whole. With that said, there is a greater chance of a black person accepting other races over a white person, because of the fact that they interact with a greater diversity of races.. but again
punkposer 2 years ago
True, more blacks live in cities, but most of the areas in which they live are not racially diverse (i.e. they contain mostly black people).
jbz7890 2 years ago
as well as Hispanics and Asians.. I call that pretty diverse..
punkposer 2 years ago
I love how he doesn't talk about the fact that 95% of black voters voted for the black candidate.
Even in the Democratic primary, blacks overwhelmingly voted for Obama over Clinton.
jbz7890 2 years ago
you forget that this was the first true black competitor, so that fact was a given; remember Rev Al Sharpton did run for president once, and he never even made it past the primaries. If a Jewish candidate popped up who had all the same qualities as Obama, I guarantee 95% of the Jewish vote would have voted for that candidate, on the fact that the majority of the our past presidents and candidates were Christian or Catholic...

ErikMartinsen81 2 years ago
You need to think about what you just wrote a little bit. You can't assume that those 'liberals' who voted for Obama, voted for him just because he's black, maybe they voted for him for the fact that it was going to be a monumental moment for this country, and trust me, it would have been the same if Hillary Clinton was the Dem candidate. yeah, and some left Africa and evolved into a civilized society. There is not ONE safe black city in the world where the black population is over 20%. Meanwhile there are THOUSANDS of safe white cities. Also, an average 40,000+ whites are raped by blacks each year in the USA. Meanwhile LESS THAN TEN blacks are raped by whites.

Forced integration may do nothing to prevent racism.
sniperontheroof123 2 years ago
Although that may be true to some extent, I do not believe that to be the case overall. Not everybody can choose what neighbourhood to live in based on desirability alone, but more so in terms of economic feasability.

437thx1138 2 years ago
Ironically, his implication that only whites are racist is undone by his own research.
If education is apparently the source of racism as he proposes, wouldn't blacks be the most racist of all? Since they have a lower education on average?
Why is this moron even giving a presentation? His propositions and arguments could be ripped to shreds in seconds.
Utterly disgraceful. Pejoratively speaking, this dumbarse is beyond a reject.
Daracon75 2 years ago 2
Seems you don't understand the concept of correlation. But probably uneducated black people are more inclined to be racist than educated black people.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
I understand correlation perfectly. However, you don't.
"Probably" in your statement is purely opinional. I think what you meant to say was "violent" rather than "racist". There would be many blacks that are very racist, yet civilised due to education, so withhold their racist tendancies.
There are far too many variables and assumptions for this presenter's work to even be considered scientific evidence.
He's honestly trying to come to a conclusion on racism from voting statistics?

@Daracon

Of the two percent for whom race was the most important factor, 58 percent voted for Obama.

CNN exit polls indicate that 53 percent of the nineteen percent of people who considered race as a factor voted for Obama. 47 percent voted for McCain. That indicates that Obama's race won him more votes than it lost him, which means that there's more racism against whites than against blacks.

This video is absolute garbage.

Is this information really anything new???
maceike 2 years ago
His point that only white people can be racist is inherently racist.
JohnJ2427 2 years ago 2
yet many try to disprove this the vote based on race, but what's crazy is how he predicts it base on race. shocking.

This guy is brilliant!

i think the internet brings new enlightenment, people exchange conversation of information with a mix of ideas and thoughts. so race becomes obsolete when you have the open source information left for everyone.

Nate is a master with the data. Loved his '08 election analysis, it was superb. His web site is 538 spelled out. Google 538 will get you there. Really quality work and shows you all the internals if you want to see them. A real pro and I don't feel like I'm getting "adjusted" by him.

Everyone allows their culture to control them. Its not just blacks LoL

You gotta love a smart geek with an audience. Not only can he discuss racial issues, Nate Silver has predicted the outcomes of various sports seasons with an accuracy that is downright scary.

These statistics are quite scary.

If you had 3 months of compulsory military service in the US you could also have the population scattered all over the place and interact with people they otherwise wouldn't know.
Apart from that, there's a study made by a teacher at Lund University's Political Science studying the hostility towards minority groups and how many of the minority lived there (the less they were, the more prejudices and higher hostility towards them)
Memubitsu 2 years ago
I was wondering if you could direct me to a site Memubitsu that would give some findings of the discrimination Study?
I can tell you from personal experience that discrimination takes place within any minority group in any living thing on this earth. All whites discriminate against the poorest white, the fattest white, or the richest white for that matter. Same way with a local deer population the females discriminate against a small group in the flock and they don't reproduce.
