haha they're playing chess!!! Axl Rose's thing was interesting - I tend not to compare the two. And since when was sounding like Led Zep so bad? ha. They are kinda like a Grunge/ late 80's/early 90's version of Zeppelin, and by that I don't mean a rip off but more that they have same position in regards to their sound relative to the rest of the scene at the time

Soundgarden was, hands down, the most musically skilled and creative of the Seattle bands. I like the other bands fine and all, but I can't think of any other band from that scene who were playing with alternate tunings, using odd time signatures and weird progressive/indian/psychedelic elements mixed with metal and punk.

@PGROSYE02 The difference between the 2 bands is not about the level of acclaim, but the record sales. As much as I love Soundgarden, I can´t think of any song which was so hard-hitting and spot-on as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" back in 91. Yeah, in 89/90 Soundgarden had everything going for them to become really big and to break Seattle into the mainstream, but then came Nevermind. Nirvana were more about loud-soft dynamics,beatlesque melodies and punk aggression + angsty lyrics,

@PGROSYE02 which proved to be more appealing with the mainstream audience and, let´s face it, more marketable by MTV and media, for better and worse. Soundgarden were always more metal and psychedelic-sounding, with a more experimental edge to their songs than Nirvana. They were a tougher act to "sell". more of an acquired taste.

Ironically, they got bigger after Nevermind´s success, especially after "Superunknown", which went straigh to nº1 in the charts.

During the 90's Soundgarden was one of my favorites. By the time 'Superunknown' came out i was hooked. That cd alone occupied my player for at least 7 months strait,no shit. When Chris did the tribute to Andrew I felt it just like everyone else who loved MotherLoveBone and Soundgarden. However,many people see Chris as a god. He was a man.Great singer,talented beyond anyone at the time. Guess Im older and enjoy the real God,Jesus Christ,and grown out of Soundgarden. Nice to look back on though!

poeple always say nirvana was the breakthrough band, you can go around in circles with that. Mother Love Bone was the band that got the labels swarming to Seattle, Soungarden was the first band get a magor label deal, Alice in Chains had the first hit with "man in the box" (Facelift went gold before Nevermind came out), and Nirvana had the first paltnuim album

Sadly the predictions by the magazines were wrong. Nirvana and Pearl Jam shadowed Soundgarden. Despite this, Soundgarden is still the greatest grunge band, in my opinion.
