It's an awesome poem, the WW1 context can't be belittled or ignored, but it rather works as a metaphor for Pete and the people watching his self-destruction. The joyous Libertines start, the downturn and the (expected but never happened) "bullet through his brain" - with the accompanying media and fan frenzy/glorification. If he had died from junk, we'd've loved him like Cobain - we don't know the hell where youth and laughter go.
