So many new pool swimmers could benefit from an actual side flip. Watch this swimmer and see how when he finishes his flip he's not on his back? Actually he swims to the wall and begins his flip on his right side. When he hits the wall, he ends up with left ear pointing to the ceiling. This means he will only have to readjust to begin swimming 1/2 of a turn. Don Schollander made the turn popualr in the late 1960's.
Well I have a problem. When I do flip turns in the end of the flip I think I turn to another direction automatically (When the right is to end the flip facing the wall, I end the flip facing the left side), so I don't go to the right direction. Can someone help me?
He did it soo perfectly.. I tend to go sideways when i try to flip. its hard :/ and first swiim meet is this saturday. hopefully this week at practice ill get it down
I don't want to be a bitch here, but the open turns as described here are against regulations at least in europe. You can't touch the pool deck. I learned to place my hands flat on the side of the wall, and push my upper body away, making my legs turn towards the wall, and then push off.
I had a friend who was disqualified for that particular reason :(
@FeuerA1 Maybe just maybe, but my arms ain't as long as thorpedo's (Ian Thorpe of Australia)..and I hate the flips (gets up my nose)!!..and im 42 yrs old this year
@vollschauer. Sorry you feel that way. This is a video to train for triathlons...triathletes usually have years of experience swimming. I wish you good luck in finding a remedial flip turn video.
@ProStacker2112 if you join a swimming club they will help you get your turn sorted out. despite what the guy says on the video, the open turns just arent as efficient or fast as the flip turn once you get it right.
@bulgaboi yeah, but its only for triathlon, its not like hes trying to compete in swimming. hes only going to lose about 10 seconds over a 400m by doing a bad turm which isnt much of a loss when hes got the bike and run to catch up. but i agree it would be catastrophic in a 400m race
1 wrong thing tho.. you should keep both hands in the side of the body when you are about to turn, you do not use ur arm to create the force of turning but your forwardforce.. thats what i learned//
another tip is, the way i learned, because i could NOT flip straight, is to go down to the bottom and a do a handstand, come back up. then do a handstand and follow through with your head, to flip. then go down again, never touch the bottom, and swing your arms, like in the video. that's only if you can't flip straight. it helped out a lot for me.
i've been trying to do this for ages lol never thought about checking youtube for it haha
will try it tonight

When you do an open turn you're supposed to touch the wall with BOTH hands and not just one or it will be Disqualified.

Thanks! I'll keep the "T" thing in mind! I'm always off a little bit. You might just have help a swimmer get better for regionals!

Thats a really shallow pool!! If you swim in deeper pools, it seems easier.

what am i doing wrong if i get water in my nose everytime i flip?
lilylover911 3 years ago
If you take a breath just before you flip then lightly exhale through your nose during the flip that should keep any water from entering your nose.
TriTrainingSeries 3 years ago 12
It just takes practice. It took me like 6 months, and my flip turn is already better than this guy.
droopy0093 3 years ago
@lilylover911 blow air out of your nose
bulgaboi 2 years ago
@lilylover911
yeah you need to exhale a little bit of air while you do the flip turn
