This is really interesting. I do kendo and naginata, In naginata, we use sune-ate for shin protection which is also a valid score if struck. I feel like adding the Hache Hogu and sune-ate and maybe knee pads would be a good thing for the sport of kendo/kumdo. This would allow for more targets making the art a lot more fun. Then maybe elbow pads and extra neck protection to truly allow for some full contact shiai.
