Good memories. I was so happy when I got this the year it came out for Christmas. I wish I still had my copy of this game. I used Toad all the time too. He was my absolute favorite, and even in the later Mario Kart games, I still have the tendency to pick Toad. That aside, I still love this version though. Nice, simple, and fun.

@BleachVanguard Late, as I'm just seeing this now, but the main reason Peach was ahead of everyone was because the player used Toad. It's like if you use Luigi (if I'm remembering right), the fastest one will be Mario. If you use the Koopa Troopa, it'll be Yoshi, etc.

@konamikoden I agree with you. The jump drift trick will give you more speed in the straightaway but it takes longer to turn corners. Plus you have less control of your car which leaves you vulnerable to obstacles.

Even though I do think this one is really fun, in my opinion, MarioKart 64 and MarioKartWii are cake compared to this one. I just got the game from eBay and it took me three days to win the Mushroom Cup for 100cc. Balancing and acceleration is tough on this one, especially for the heavy characters (Bowser and DK)

Personally I think the whole thing hit the crapper when the Ps1/N64 came out. I lost interest in video games for almost 10 years because the games gravitated away from being fun and enjoyable to being brown, dirty, mature-rated FPS clones.

No, Nintendo hasn't thank goodness, but the other consoles are very much so. The Ps2, xbox, 360, and Ps3 all have a TON of brown-tinted games. So many that they overshadow any game that's actually a bit colorful. Not to mention around the time of the Ps2 is when FPS games REALLY got their start and became dominant in the video game industry.
