i use to love when Musberger would say, "what a spectacular move by the Doctor"! i was too young for the ABA and by the time i 1st saw him play it was in the '77 playoffs(1st round)against Boston as well as the 77 finals and those 1st 2 NBA seasons are as close as you get the seeing the "ABA Doc". that game 6 of the '77 finals is what Doc did night in and out in the ABA in front of small crowds and almost NO TV!
@elwin38 I couldn't agree more.Last game against Houston in the '77 playoffs Doc had 27 at "1/2TIME" & he missed 2or3 lay-ups& passed off a couple of times within 5 ft. of the basket. '77 people also learned what a class act Doc was as a person. How could someone that "Spectacular" be equally "Humble".- Check '77 all-star game-Doc plays great!-Wins MVP in a west city( after the west wins the game.)Doc talks slowly, from the heart, actually apologizes for MVP & turns BOOS to APPLAUSE--"amazing"!!
@garyth65 A couple of guys may have been as good or better as Doc talent wise.As for CLASS!!--ORIGINALITY!!--SINCERITY!! and GRACE!! on and off the the court?Quite simply,no one even comes CLOSE!!
i remember the high priest of hype ( brett musberger ) would always start his telecasts with "this afternoon we have a house call from the doctor" it became my favorite saying,it meant we all got to watch dr j.he was my favorite player, the one who added flash to the game, unfotunately i never got to see him in his aba days so thanx for the great video
Red Auerbach is a bastard for shitting on the ABA. There was some serious talent and teams in that league. Auerback was scared of the ABA.

Long Island's own. At that time, he was simply the greatest basketball player on earth, with Nate Archibald the second greatest.

@garyth65 yep..Hubie Brown said when he coached the Colonels, every time Doc came to Kentucky, he would have the home cheering for the other team.
