@LORNASAND If it wasnt for Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, there would have been no metal, shock rock, arena rock, no massive stage shows, rock would have stayed hippie flower power if not for those bands. Kiss was a great amazing band up until 1979, then Gene fell in love with the money and turned kiss into a product instead of a band, Kiss has done some good albums off and on scince then, but then Gene always drifts back into crazy market ideas. Alice has stayed true ..
that opening line kills me....If a guy paid 6 bucks to see my show.....he's not just gonna see some guitar.......HA......costs 6 bucks for a fuckin coke at a show anymore....
"they're going to see more than just a guy playing a guitar" Yeah they saw him flashing around plastic babies and then chopping them up. Oh that;s talent!
@KSitz77 But he thought of it....he did it. That is the mastery to go out on a limb knowing that a good portion of people are going to see it as stupid.
Alice said it best himself in "The Decline of Western Civilization: Part 2"- when asked by the interviewer if rock music corrupts kids, he replied, "Rock music should corrupt kids enough to think... there's nothing wrong with thinking." This guy has always been a freakin' genius!!! By the way, thanks for this and great discussion!
To think a whole generation was brought up on this insanity is very worrying. This garbage poisoned and twisted young people’s minds and not musically educated or matured them. Infact, it’s a musical retrogression.
@reziztanze This happens to be real music that enriched the minds of the people of that era. I wish I could have been alive then to see it. Now the airwaves are poisoned with mainstream pop crap, which to me is musical retrogression. And if you see what people like Alice did to create a society of individual people with thoughts beyond what the mainstream wanted as poisoning of young people's minds then I do weep for you.
@67crow76 How did it enrich the minds with poison about dead babies and sex with dead bodies? Music today is even worse than the Cooper era. Music went off track in the 1950’s and 60’s.
@reziztanze First of all it's called "Shock Rock" for a reason. Alice was one of the first to use horror imagery as a theme for his music. It's a form of rock opera. Plus if you listen to the lyrics of "Dead Babies" it's actually about parents not taking care of their child and the child dying because of it.
@reziztanze Music went off track in the 50's and 60's? As opposed to before when all that was around was that crooner crap? Sure there was jazz and blues music but then where the hell do you think the music from the 70's was derived from? It was called "progressive" because it progressed away from songs about going steady with girls.
Alice not only has things to say, but also tells stories through his music. This is genuine art.
@67crow76 Progressive??? Punks with Mohicans... Freaks like David Bowie.... Faggots like Queen.... and plenty more unnatural garbage of the likes of Gary Glitter, The Sweet and other equally silly named bands.
@reziztanze Ah, I see how this is. No real argument so we'll just starting throwing around insults like "faggots" and "freaks" huh? Fine I guess anyone can just win an argument like that.
By the way, don't lump Gary Glitter in with The Sweet. Come back when you actually have something relevant to say.
@reziztanze No, not end of. To call Alice's lyrics sick and destructive is to miss the point completely and to call The Sweet "Deviants" like Gary Glitter is just dickish, childish and altogether fucking stupid.
What's next? You going to criticise the dude for having an original thought?
@reziztanze First of all "Cold Ethel" was part of a concept album that told a story of mental illness. "I Love the Dead" is just another variation of that theme. It's Gothic lyricism. It paints a picture in people's minds like if you were to see a picture of a bloody knife or a gravestone in a gallery.
And just what the hell do you mean "Destructive"? What, you think that people are going to listen to "I Love the Dead" and go out to fuck a corpse? What a bunch of crap.
@reziztanze Since when was all music "supposed" to help kids be better kids? It's art as entertainment! It's like reading a horror novel, you read it because it's ENTERTAINING not because you think you'll be a better person because of it!
@Dillbob1 that was the 5th time for me, first time i saw him was with megadeath in seattle also seen him with the scorpions if you get a chance go see him
That looks insane! The drummer appears like a giant behind Alice. I wonder how they did that? The song and presentation is totally freaky, even now after all these years.
Alice was unique and original. Most who came later were just doing his gig.

This song probably had more to do with the creation of child safety caps on medicine than any news stories at the time.
