I am going to have to side with Tiffany on the whole moisturizer thing. I have extremely oily skin (I wash my face three times a day just to keep up). While I do keep moisturizer, I don't feel the need to use it every single day. For instance, I won't use it at all or use a tiny amount in the summer months. With years of learning my skin, I have learned that my skin will definitely make its own moisture and adding a moisturizer will frequently such make it a greasy mess. Not pretty.
Ya know, I'm glad you actually recommended Proactive for the removal of blackheads because I also have pretty oily skin too and nothing had worked for me. But now that you said Proactive gets rid of blackheads I'm going to have to try it out. Thanks Tiff!
Yeah no you should definitely moisturize if you have oily skin. Your skin produces more oil when it's dry, it's just a matter of finding a moisturizer that works for you.
i use the 3 steps of proactiv but only once a day and then use a gentle cleanser in the morning. i really want to get the clarisonic mia to use for the gentle cleanser though.
I just wanted to add. I have dry skin and use proactiv. I just use a moisturizer along with the 3 steps. Just a regular face moisturizer and I have no problems. I also only wash my face once a day, which is at night. So in the morning I may use a wash cloth with warm water really quick and that's it. Or at least that's what I did before being pregnant.
I had really bad acne growing up and nothing ever helped it. I'm 25 now and it's not as bad, but proactiv really worked, the $55 (or whatever) is worth it. I'm not using anything right now because I'm pregnant and can't stand the smells of face wash, so my face is breaking out again. Doxycycline is for preventing malaria too, I had to take it when deployed to Afghanistan and my skin was amazing with it.
people shouldn't be talking about moisturizers being necessary and throwing off balances and all that jazz because there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support these "claims"
hahah you actually need a moisturizer no matter how oily your skin is , because you're using harsh products with slicylic acid like proactiv you're stripping your skin of all the oils it needs to recover , so you need to moisturize so you're skin wouldn't go into a shock mode and produce even more oil . please do some research before giving advice ; this could realy ruin people's skin and thus their life .
Vitamin A controls oil production. I take 100,000 i.u daily. Yes this is above the recommend amount but it has dramatically changed my skin! I recommend starting with 50,000 iu of vitamin a for oily skin and bump up from there and 50mg of zinc to heal scars. If you see any drying in your skin it's time to back down to 25-50,000 i.u Results are guaranteed from this. I'd love for anyone to give me there feed back. My skin has cleared completely and I just ordered the Clarisonic Pro.
i have sensitive skin and proactiv made my skin ridiculously red and irritated. I'm guessing thats what happened to the people complaining about proactiv actually causing breakouts instead of clearing them... putting all those harsh chemicals on your face causes your skin to go into overdrive to protect itself not only from the bacteria causing your acne but also the chemicals that are making it red and sore. a gentle but effective cleanser plus a spot treatment is all you need.
Meghanmusic, she is not off base because your skin ONLY over compensates if you are lacking moisture. Tiffany mentions many times that it may not be the same for everyone but people with her skin type dont really need the extra moisture. Then she goes on to mention that during winter/ when her skin does need it she uses a moisturizer. Oil is a natural moisturizer so if you have plenty of it there is no need to add more.
I'm in high school and I have been using proactiv for like 2 months but I haven't really noticed a difference. I don't know what to do I went to the dermatologist and he gave me cynda something idk but I feel like my skin got worse as well. Do you have any suggestions?
People who have problems with Proactiv are usually people who live in an area with hard water. Proactiv will react poorly with high levels of calcium and lime in tap water. If that's the case, they can either install a water sofening system, get a small system for the sink/shower only, or use distilled water from a bottle and they won't have those problems.
Trust me when I say that the best moisturizer on the market is actually a very cheap product you can get at just about any WalMart, Walgreens or CVS; it's called "Cetaphil Cream." It is AWESOME. It has no fragrance, it doesn't cause break outs, isn't greasy (it completely soaks in after about 10 mins) and it lasts all day. I'm not the only one who feels this way... if you google it, it has dozens and dozens and dozens of good reviews. Especially on Amazon. Buy it! You won't be disappointed!
ok u r a complete lifesaver! i had exama on my face and arms and i am going to start with that stuff and c what happens, i hope it works becuz everybody makes fun of me about my exama :'(
I used proactiv for about 3 months & I broke out so bad, I called them to ask why. they said probably the products tried to bring all the bacteria to the surface so it will get worse before getting better... I believed them & kept using until my acne became cystic, saw a dermatologist & It turned out I'm allergic the Proactiv's active ingredient... The commercial sold me but no it didn't work on me & I have oily/acne prone skin type... It actually broke me out like crazy...
what's the other thing that you've used that is similiar to the clarisonic? is it the sun polisher? because im planning on gtting that one because its also got the body polisher. x
@vanityspace there are actually a couple of similar brushes. I did a bunch of research on all of them before finally settling for the actual clarisonic (I managed to snag it on ebay for about $100). But there's one called Dermanew I-skin Pore Perfector, which is about 30 bucks, and you can get it at Sally's. There's another called Pretika which is about 40-50 bucks and you can get it at Target. Pretika is rechargeable and the I-Skin needs batteries. Both have gotten pretty positive reviews.
Some people do have an allergic reaction to Proactiv. The benzoyl peroxide gave me cystic acne which went away when I discontinued Proactiv. Honestly.
I loved this video :) You're so lucky you didn't have to go through acne in High School, It sucks! & Yeah I don't use a moisturizer because I have oily skin all over, unless it's Winter. Love your videos!!! :)
Back in the day when I used proactiv, everytime I would wash my face, my face would BURN! It was horrific. My face also tuned really red... and it was just terrible. Using it with my Clarisonic only made things 10 times worst. Now I just use my Laura Mercier foaming cleanser with my Clarisonic, and it's much more gentle. :-)
i wish proactive worked for me, it was too harsh though.
but i went to the dermatologist and he give me minocyline and my skin is much better now and i use laneige and aveeno and it helps my sensitive skin, but i still have blackheads and want the clarisonic.
wow, you are so off-base with the moisturizer comment! even oily skin should be moisturized -- skipping that step makes your skin produce extra oils to compensate. Yikes! Be careful what advice you give...
@meghanmusic where did you hear that? while that can be true, if you put moisture on your skin exsessively or when it isn't needed, your skin can stop producing as much of its natural oils. just like if you use chapstick all the time, you'll notice your lips getting drier and needing more of that moisture. so while you should use a moisturizer when your skin needs it, it's okay to skip it when you feel like you don't.
@meghanmusic , she is not off base because your skin ONLY over compensates if you are lacking moisture.
She is right! If your skin is balanced you may not need to use a moisturizer!
If you over moisturize your skin it may trick your skin into thinking its naturally moisturized so it will stop producing natural oils, which will cause dryness and causing you to have to moisturize even more with more intense moisturizers!
hey tiffany i know this has nothing to do with this video but i have a problem when it comes to buying foundation, powder ,etc. my face is alot lighter than my body and i dont know how to make it match. should i buy foundation the color of my body or what? please help!!!!!!
Proactiv didn't work for me, and I used it consistently and wasted several hundred dollars on it. Exactly why they say your results will vary. What a huge waste, for me anyway.
Proactive helps with my active acne, but I have tons of colorless bumps on my forehead that have been there for 10 years of so, I suppose from where I used to have bangs. Do you have any suggestions for things to help with my issue?
visiting a dermatologist would be a good idea, but i suggest a cosmetologist if the bumps are from acne that had cleared up. wash your face with chamomile tea and is going to be better.
Your skin looks AMAZING.. I tried proactive but it didn't really do much for me.. unfortunately.. now I use clearasil and it works pretty well.. I wish I had your FLAWLESS skin though haha:P
omg! i had almost the exact same thing! i have been using proactive for only a year,,(im only 14), i just used it for little issues, nothing serious,, and i have stopped using it for awhile and my chin is totally acting out, so now im going to go on it again and see if it fixes itslef.
omg! i had the same thing happen to me. I used proactive for years and my skin was beautiful (i didn't need moisturizer either) but suddenly my skin started acting out and proactive doesn't work for me like it used to. Not Proactive's fault though I believe my problem is hormonal from having children. It hasn't even been a full year since I stopped nursing either, so I'm hoping my skin will get back to normal. I am definitely gonna try that Clairisonic. Thanks for the info (again) !
I love proactive...I've used it for ten years...and much like you I never had serious issues..just little stuff...I started when I was 15...I took a break (mainly for money reasons) and my skin had a total hissy fit...lol...and stupid me was thinking...what the hell?! Since it had been a month since I stopped w/ proactive I never thought that was the issue....then I went back on it...and it cleared me up..now I use the sensative one b/c my skin has changed since highschool and I like it more!
Hi there! I have had almost the exact same skincare issues as you described. Proactiv for about 8 yrs, skin looked great. 6 months ago stopped using it to try to use something "less harsh."
I've been breaking out more than usual in the chin area. It's definitely hormonal breakouts, so my aunt who's a derm is sending me some Oracea, which is doxycycline. Can you please tell me what brand of doxy you take and what dosage?
I normaly wouldn't ask out of good manners, but if someone is doing any kind of face products review tutorial, especially skin care I feel it's important to know the age as well as skin type.
ive been using proactiv for almost 3 years now and i havent had any major problems with it...just like you, my breakouts are hormonal so its hard to get rid of them with proactiv alone...i love proactiv...the only downside is that it makes me face SUPER oily...i thought about not using the lotion, but then again, that might even make it worse since moisturizing is very essential for the skin
i know a lot of times, people can be allergic to the formula in proactive too. like, the benzoyl peroxide in it can make people break out. that's why I use Biore because it doesn't have that ingredient so it's not as harsh on my sensitive skin.
just a tip for others watching who might not get help from proactive.
proactive is not for everyone!! It even says in the description that if u have certain side effects to discontinue use or to not use it as often, which is dumb cause then u have to spend more money on other products to use when ur not using proactive. I used proactive for 2 months hoping that eventually my skin would clear up, but had to stop using it cause i broke out more than ever before, got rashes, and inflamed because of the benzly peroxide thingy. I realized im allergic to it. Go figure.
Did your skin get worse the first week back on Proactiv when you were taking Doxycycline? I'm on that medication too and I stopped Proactiv, but I'm thinking about getting back on it.
My skin although oily is too sensitive for Proactiv. It works best on non-sensitive skin. I have been using Korres Complexion Clearing Regimen, a natural skincare line at Sephora. Also, I use Korres yogurt cream for oily/dehydrated skin during winter b/c the skin on my cheeks gets dry. The kit has cleared my acne well. The yogurt cream maintains the perfect balance of moisture, and I think it decreases shine when used regularly. Try proactiv if your skin is not sensitive, my friends love it.
I tried Proactiv for months and it never really did anything for me. Sure, it helped sort of clear my skin, but I was never WOWED by it. I have combination skin, like most people, and I just found the Clinique three step face wash. IT IS A MIRACLE. It cleared me up in one week.
You need to answer a few questions to see which number (1,2,3,4) you are... I really do recommend it!
My friend said I have a very smooth & almost flawless skin. I used L'oreal Hydrafresh & I love its aqua-essence that make my skin hydrate & fresh after applying it. As I have combination skin, i need mosturiser before i start my day. I found out 3 basics steps; cleaning, toning & mosturising; make my skin smooth & flawless. But the important thing for me is to cleanse & make sure you dont put anything on your skin before u sleep. Let your skin breath & relax while u were sleeping.
I'm 31 and am really starting to try to "take care" of my skin. I was Proactiv junkie too, but recently I've been trying to use more "natural products" . I have combination skin so I always need a moisturizer, but using more natural products has helped my skin be flawless! which I thougt was impossible! no blackheads, whiteheads or visible pores & best of all it's even! I really do think you should do what works for you, but as you get older think about getting off the proactiv. Kinda rough.
So what are natural products you use? I'm looking for something more natural as well and at the same time, something that is not time consuming. Quick and natural, in other words. So please tell me what do you use? I have oily skin and I feel like it's getting more and more oily by days. I break out easily, too.
i wish proactiv made my skin perfect like it does for so many, but it gave me a huge rash on my face and neck! still looking for that holy grail product! you look gorgeous! take care!
I appreciate u sharing ur skincare, just want to start saying that I have heard of clarisonic but its just too much money for me and just wondering if u think that the neutrogena wave or duo is a good alternative. If you can let me know just let me know it would be great. By the way are u still using proactiv if not what r u using?
Do not get the Wave, it is a crappy product. Have u seen the michellephan video about her skincare on the go, she says it is a terrible product, all it does is vibrate your face. I saved up money here and there and got the clarisonic, it's so worth it, hope I've helped.
In your blog you write about a new face cleaning system that you were starting. You said that you would follow up on how that works. Is this the video in response to that? I cant find any videos or blogs where you give the results on the Lush face cleaning products. Would love to know what happened. :)
hmm i don't agree with your "don't need a moisturizer all the time." i think you do. i think toner is different. you really don't need toner all the time.
I too use ProActiv, but I'm trying to "get off" of it. My esthetician (sp?) friend said that the Benzoyl Peroxide covers over your pores keeping impurities from getting in, so that when you go off of it, your pores open up and junk gets in. I'm getting older (29) and need something less harsh. Are you still using ProActiv, or have you found anything else that works?
Hey Tiffany! Okay so Sephora stores sell the Clarisonic for a lot cheaper than at the link you posted, are they different or what? Which would you recommend?
they have that angelicue flat iron in my mall. they like sample it on your hair to show how good it straightens and curls it. mine broke when it fell on the floor. it fell from like 2 feet.
I have had the same results with ProActive however, if you ever watch QVC they have a line called 100% pure and the 3 step process they have is wayyyy better and all natural!! But again I had to use all three steps, cleanse, tone and moisturizer.
When did you start using proactiv? and how long have u used it for? I've used it for like 3 mnths its working great but i'm not sure if i shoudls top using it. My skins pretty oily and break out every now and then. Please help?
if you have such perfect skin, why do you wear foundation? sorry, tiffany, i don't mean it in an offensive way. i am loyal subscriber, but i am just curious!!
I'm planning on getting the Sun Body Polisher Leesha had in a video because I can't afford the Clarisonic. I have the Neutregena Wave right now and it's making a difference which is why I'm getting the Body Polisher.
I use cetaphil and it works good for me because I have pretty sensitive skin. You're right, everything works different for everyone. Because proactive didn't work for me at all, it is more clear now than it used to be when I was using proactive.
sorry proactive sucks its too alkaline and it did absolutely nothing to my face.... waste of my money...i use murad instead its gentle and has an awesome range of products....nono more proactive please....
to YOUR face... doesn't mean it 'sucks' as you put it... just different products work for different people. Tiffany was just saying what works really well for HER skin and if she still loves it after 9 years then it obviously doesn't 'suck' for her.
you are so beautiful, i always watch your videos. My hair is medium to long lenth also, so you hair ideas help, love the makeup, and you always wear nice clothes. 100percent. xx
We have almost the same exact skin routinue. That's weird! I have the same type of skin too. ProActiv is amazing I don't have acne, but it clears up my skin. I have to get the Clarisonic now! Thanks so much.
Mineral oil is, dear. The reason why people get acne is because of oil and dirt accumilation. Adding oil to your skin when it's already acneic is only going to make things worst. Reason why there are fragrance and oil free products now-a-days
Just bought the clarisonic. Been using it for over a week now and I love it! It is pricey but if you have acne, whiteheads or blackheads it really is worth it. I'm 34 and have been fighting acne my whole life and this has made my skin look great. Also, I use Effaclar by La Roche-Posay. That has changed my life. Proactive did not work for me. We sell the Effaclar at my Dr.'s office, and the whole staff uses it. Great stuff.
i've started using proactiv for few days now cos i've been breaking out (a new one every morning!). and i find it a bit dry. i only use it at night tho~
It does that in the beginning, cause your skin isn't used to it. Remember to only use a pea amount of the lotion/step 3. I find that putting another face lotion (like olay's face lotion) after step 3 helps w/the dryness. hope that helps.
thx for the advise but i did use another moisturizer and yesterday i tried using it again (after stop for 2 days) it's burning my skin, my skin is too sensitve for the ingredients, i am going to return the products today. i tried to like them but i just can't! now my skin is really sensitive and it's kind of red and rough now :(
SAME EXACT skin issue i have....stupid hormones! They ruin everything. Honestly, i have yet to find a good face wash routine that is combating the acne around my chin and jaw line area. I had flawless skin my whole life until about a year 1/2 ago...i feel ya girl. Unfortunately, proactiv never really helped me, but it did for my sister. I also have more oily skin than dry.
Hey girl, I think Im suffering from what you went through before developing acne on the chin first and hormones going crazy. I have tried EVERYTHING however nothing really works. I want to try Proactive but im worried that it'll make me break out more. Please advise, thanks so much!!
I have the Clarisonic MIA (Universal charger so I can bring it with me when I travel in Asia and Europe). It's amazing. It's worth the money!!! LOVE it.
i use cetaphil and i work great. i have eczema so my skin is so dry and cracked and i have to use a percription steriod cream to help with the moisture but overall i dont have acne. only once in a while.
I use a combination of oxy, clearskin professional and the ocassional aspirin mask. The clearskin professions is kind of like the proactive because it has three steps; Deep Pore Cleansing Scrub (Exfoliator), Toning Pad (Cotton pad pre-soaked in the toner), and correcting lotion (helps clears up acne scaring and moisturizes). I was told that it uses some of the same ingredience as pro-active... you might want to check that out.
I have to disagree with you about the using a moisturizer, I'm a skin specialist and have been for going on 5 years now. It is always important to use a moisturizer to keep your skin moist and not to dry up through out the day. If you have oily skin you still need to use a moisturizer but an oil free one.
I use to use proactive before but the only reason I stop is because I have skin reaction to it, so I stop. My skin till now is still bad, I break out about 4 or 5 acne on my skin. Between my forehead, temple and my chin. I am still looking for a product that well woks good for my acne and my pores. I'm a dry skin person. Anybody knows tell me so I can start healing my acne. I think I well try clarisonic too.
I am going to have to side with Tiffany on the whole moisturizer thing. I have extremely oily skin (I wash my face three times a day just to keep up). you should alwaysssss moisturize. I used to have insane oily skin, and nd started using EVOO and it actually became LESS oily.
Also with proactiv it does work, but your skin gets ADDICTED to it and if you change, your skin will be a wreck.

dynamicshock17 1 year ago
I used proactiv, it made my blemish's SORT OF disappear, yet not totally, but the toner was horrific. My skin was more oily. Not for me, sadly. :/
Sweetreat101 1 year ago
i wish proactive worked for me, it was too harsh though.
but i went to the dermatologist and he give me minocyline and my skin is much better now and i use laneige and aveeno and it helps my sensitive skin, but i still have blackheads and want the clarisonic.
gumybearss 1 year ago
wow, you are so off-base with the moisturizer comment! even oily skin should be moisturized -- skipping that step makes your skin produce extra oils to compensate. Yikes! Be careful what advice you give...
meghanmusic 1 year ago 96
@meghanmusic where did you hear that? while that can be true, if you put moisture on your skin exsessively or when it isn't needed, your skin can stop producing as much of its natural oils. just like if you use chapstick all the time, you'll notice your lips getting drier and needing more of that moisture. so while you should use a moisturizer when your skin needs it, it's okay to skip it when you feel like you don't.
samekindofmusic 1 year ago
@meghanmusic actually she is right my dermatologist said the same thing..
maddyjanne 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@meghanmusic , she is not off base because your skin ONLY over compensates if you are lacking moisture.
MarLeyBug08 1 year ago
@meghanmusic
Everyone is different!
She is right! If your skin is balanced you may not need to use a moisturizer!
If you over moisturize your skin it may trick your skin into thinking its naturally moisturized so it will stop producing natural oils, which will cause dryness and causing you to have to moisturize even more with more intense moisturizers!

Proactive helps with my active acne, but I have tons of colorless bumps on my forehead that have been there for 10 years of so, I suppose from where I used to have bangs. Do you have any suggestions for things to help with my issue?
Ashlikkah 1 year ago
visiting a dermatologist would be a good idea, but i suggest a cosmetologist if the bumps are from acne that had cleared up. wash your face with chamomile tea and is going to be better.

omg! i had almost the exact same thing! i have been using proactive for only a year,,(im only 14), i just used it for little issues, nothing serious,, and i have stopped using it for awhile and my chin is totally acting out, so now im going to go on it again and see if it fixes itslef.
glowingteen 2 years ago
omg! i had the same thing happen to me.

Szarella 2 years ago
Can you please tell me what brand of doxy you take and what dosage?

ive been using proactiv for almost 3 years now and i havent had any major problems with it...just like you, my breakouts are hormonal so its hard to get rid of them with proactiv alone...i love proactiv...the only downside is that it makes me face SUPER oily...i thought about not using the lotion, but then again, that might even make it worse since moisturizing is very essential for the skin

i know a lot of times, people can be allergic to the formula in proactive too. like, the benzoyl peroxide in it can make people break out. that's why I use Biore because it doesn't have that ingredient so it's not as harsh on my sensitive skin.
just a tip for others watching who might not get help from proactive.

proactive is not for everyone!! Go figure.

PandaBaby51 2 years ago
My skin although oily is too sensitive for Proactiv. It works best on non-sensitive skin. I have been using Korres Complexion Clearing Regimen, a natural skincare line at Sephora. Also, I use Korres yogurt cream for oily/dehydrated skin during winter b/c the skin on my cheeks gets dry. The kit has cleared my acne well. The yogurt cream maintains the perfect balance of moisture, and I think it decreases shine when used regularly. Try proactiv if your skin is not sensitive, my friends love it.
britz76 2 years ago
I tried Proactiv for months and it never really did anything for me. Sure, it helped sort of clear my skin, but I was never WOWED by it. I have combination skin, like most people, and I just found the Clinique three step face wash. IT IS A MIRACLE. It cleared me up in one week.
You need to answer a few questions to see which number (1,2,3,4) you are... I really do recommend it!
smilesarelove111 2 years ago
My friend said I have a very smooth & almost flawless skin. I used L'oreal Hydrafresh & I love its aqua-essence that make my skin hydrate & fresh after applying it. As I have combination skin, i need mosturiser before i start my day. I found out 3 basics steps; cleaning, toning & mosturising; make my skin smooth & flawless. But the important thing for me is to cleanse & make sure you dont put anything on your skin before u sleep. Let your skin breath & relax while u were sleeping.
firzct 2 years ago
I'm 31 and am really starting to try to "take care" of my skin. I was Proactiv junkie too, but recently I've been trying to use more "natural products" . I have combination skin so I always need a moisturizer, but using more natural products has helped my skin be flawless! which I thougt was impossible! no blackheads, whiteheads or visible pores & best of all it's even! I really do think you should do what works for you, but as you get older think about getting off the proactiv. Kinda rough.
Watand1502 2 years ago
So what are natural products you use? I'm looking for something more natural as well and at the same time, something that is not time consuming. Quick and natural, in other words. So please tell me what do you use? I have oily skin and I feel like it's getting more and more oily by days. I break out easily, too.

buscando 2 years ago
Do not get the Wave, it is a crappy product. Have u seen the michellephan video about her skincare on the go, she says it is a terrible product, all it does is vibrate your face. I saved up money here and there and got the clarisonic, it's so worth it, hope I've helped.

hmm i don't agree with your "don't need a moisturizer all the time." i think you do. i think toner is different. you really don't need toner all the time.
jfridayify 2 years ago 2
I too use ProActiv, but I'm trying to "get off" of it. My esthetician (sp?) friend said that the Benzoyl Peroxide covers over your pores keeping impurities from getting in, so that when you go off of it, your pores open up and junk gets in. I'm getting older (29) and need something less harsh. Are you still using ProActiv, or have you found anything else that works?

Mineral oil is, dear. The reason why people get acne is because of oil and dirt accumilation. Adding oil to your skin when it's already acneic is only going to make things worst. Reason why there are fragrance and oil free products now-a-days
sundaySLOWdown 2 years ago
Just bought the clarisonic. Been using it for over a week now and I love it! It is pricey but if you have acne, whiteheads or blackheads it really is worth it. I'm 34 and have been fighting acne my whole life and this has made my skin look great. Also, I use Effaclar by La Roche-Posay. That has changed my life. Proactive did not work for me. We sell the Effaclar at my Dr.'s office, and the whole staff uses it. Great stuff.

mademoiselletoffee 2 years ago
It does that in the beginning, cause your skin isn't used to it. Remember to only use a pea amount of the lotion/step 3. I find that putting another face lotion (like olay's face lotion) after step 3 helps w/the dryness. hope that helps.
