I recently got a BTS and he seems to drool a lot after drinking water and "yawns" a bit as well after drinking. Seems to sometimes make a gasping action with his mouth, like he can't catch his breath as well. Is this normal or is he simply drinking to fast/to much?
@CashSmeller You just let them eat until they are full. It's a couple of tablespoons of food. Sometimes they wipe their mouths on the ground in front of them when they are finished, it's really cute. A typical batch of food enough for my TWO skinks might be like: half a can of Wellness or Spot's Stew (or a fuzzy mouse or the equivalent amount of meat), a big collard green leaf or 5-7 dandelion green leaves, 5-6 chopped green beans, a 1/2" section of butternut squash, grated.
@2LiveCrewRemix don't worry; i didn't come back to ask yet ANOTHER question, lol, i just wanted to say thanks for all your help! now all i gotta do is convince my parents to let me get one XD
Very freaking awesome Skink. Beautiful and huge. Just perfect. Hey, I have a juvenile Skink and can't seem to figure out why it doesn't bathe in the water and rarely drinks. Any idea?? Thanks by the way, I was recommended to feed the Skink high quality dog food-is this good or bad?
@95blckfirebird1 They don't drink that often and he could be doing it when you aren't looking! He's getting hydration from his food too. High quality pet food is fine as a protein source, but be sure it truly is high quality. Read the ingredients to avoid corn and grain fillers and by-products. Spot's Stew, Wellness, Merrick, and Newman's Own are all good brands. As omnivores they need fresh vegetables, greens, and fruits in addition to the canned food.
very cute! Im ordering one soon. Its amazing how cheap the supplies is online! The only pricey thing about them is the lizard itself and finding a tank.
think im gonna buy one of these they look so adorable and cool i mean look at theyr colour and they have blue tounges but what kind of food does it eat both meat or green??
Yes, they eat both meats and greens/vegetables. Some fruit too. At bluetongueskinksDOTnet you will find a care sheet that details how to care for them, including a list of foods.
Let it go. It is illegal to take them from the wild. If you want a blue tongue, you can research and buy a captive born one from a breeder. A lizard captured in the wild will not behave like Ping does. It will be terrified of you and will not be a good pet. Did I mention it's illegal?
I got him from a breeder for $110 + $75 shipping if I remember right (so about £62 + £42). The inexpensive pet store blue tongue you saw was likely imported from Indonesia -- he will probably have a bad attitude and a parasite burden. :(
That's because skinks were the evolution just before snakes. If ya look at Schneider's (I believe that's spelled right) Skinks, they look just like painted snakes with legs. xD
I got him from a breeder -- seikereptiles DOT com. If you buy a skink from him, you not only get to pick out the individual animal but you will also see pictures of the parents (kind of like selecting a pure bred puppy). Recommended. :)
In my opinion, 48x18. Some people use 36x18. I started out with that size, but I felt that he quickly outgrew it. It does need to be at least 18" deep, because they'll need that space to comfortably turn around. He's very active and curious, and he moves around the entire tank all day. So the bigger the better for these guys. I got my acrylic sliding front tank from glasscages DOT com. There's a good blue tongue care sheet at bluetongueskinks DOT net.

@2LiveCrewRemix , you're supposed to feed them 2-3 times a week, right? well, if you do that, how much are you supposed to feed them each time?

Skink's are nothing like snakes. You can cerate a bond with the animal and a snake no just not going to happen.
