  • the title of the video is "how many scales does danny gill know?", and in the first 13 seconds, hes like "well...i dunno how many scales i know..."

  • WTF. That wasn't a harmonic minor scale, it was major phrygian...and this guy's supposed to be a teacher????

  • @doowop2302 He just ended on an E because he wanted to play every string, give him a break

  • @doowop2302 You're write, wrong ideed.

  • @StuGaZzZ1 Hi there Danny uses D'addarrio Gauge 9.5 super light strings - hope that helps!

  • @StuGaZzZ1 LoL Fail i wanted to ask Can you answer me this question xD sry :D

  • you can't make up your own scales lol all the scales are written and it's not like you can invent new scales rofl

  • i love this guy lol

  • Stupid question. A better one is how many fingering patterns of each scale do you know?

  • help! i can't stop making boring solos using the scales i know...

  • @leopower7 If anybody gives you an answer to that, please let me know.I have the same problem.

  • @680540 then stop using only scales, throw in some originality

  • @LightningFallsGuitar Like what ? What can you play without using scales ?

if you can think of something i'll try it.Thanks

  • @leopower7 best thing i can say is to look to the masters and what they do that you don't. take your five favorite guitarists and try to learn a solo or even just a couple sections of solos then try to figure out what they are doing that makes their solos sound good and why yours aren't. had to do that myself

  • @leopower7 just spend alot of time playing guitar. when I started i probably spent 6 hrs to 8 hrs playing a day, now it would be hard for me to do that. I can pretty much get all i need practiced in a hr or so. from what i have learned the music theory stuff can just wait a bit, focus on your speed and technique first then worry about that stuff when you feel comfortable to learn it. thats just me though

  • @leopower7 no but there is no guitar technique that can teach you emotion either. you wanna learn to play with emotion listen to what your heart tells you to play. when you start out playing guitar the best thing to do is to get your hands good enough to do anything you want to, so when you want to play something emotional, fast, or anything else you can do it. i think the best way i learned was to be able to play with someone that was ten times better than me. you pick up on stuff quicker.

  • @shadybrain3424 well, i'm not looking for a technique to deliver emotion into the playing. going where your 'heart tells you to go' doesn't make sense. plus i don't have anybody to teach me :/

  • @leopower7 hello friend giving emotion to playing comes with three main aspects

1- the sounds you hear..like all of us you do hear music..the question is what does the music you like make you feel? excited? relaxed? pumped? sophisticated?

2- knowing what feeling you want to express when you play that mainly comes with a theme *which is usually the backing track*

3- finally the sounds YOU want to make be it a fast shred solo or a slow blues one that expresses what your mind wants to say

  • @leopower7 anytime feel free to ask anything glad i could help

  • @leopower7 If you wanna learn to play better solos try learning a new technique. Try tapping, arpeggios, triads, octaves etc. Or another way is to restrict yourself. Instead of playing Blues Scale the entire time, try playing the blues scale on only the top three strings. Or, try playing an entire solo on one string! If you restrict yourself like that, it forces you to be more creative with the little that you have.

  • @Botdra I already have great technique, but still can't make anything good :(

  • @leopower7 It's not about HAVING great technique, I meant try LEARNING a new technique. even if you can't do it very fast it will help you explore new things.

  • @Botdra But I already LEARNED the techniques o.O

I can play ninja speed already, but the most important thing, which is phrasing, I'm getting nowhere =(

  • @leopower7 Well then how about limiting yourself? That's the real way I find that teaches you to improv better. Pick a backing track, and limit yourself. Start by say, doing the whole solo on the high E string, then do it on each string. Then say "Okay I'm ONLY gonna use this shape of the scale", then say you're only going to use triads and arpeggios (NOT JUST SWEEP ARPEGGIOS).

  • @Botdra thanks for the tip, i'll definitely try that.

  • @leopower7 Awesome, if you need help let me know!

  • @Botdra This sounds like Day9 :>

  • @leopower7 welcome to guitar hell....

  • @leopower7 stop thinking about scales and star thinking on phrasing..

  • @leopower7 Listen to david gilmour's solos. He makes beautiful melodies using mainly the pentatonic scale.

  • @leopower7 yes yes , i know the case. many players suffer from this "plague" which could also be called lack of imagination. this occurs on both; players with vast theory knowledge and players with none. sometimes it can be cured with time and by playing and listening to many types of music, and sometimes it never goes away and people are stuck with creating boring solos, regardless of ones knowledge of theory. such a pity.

  • @leopower7 try wierd ways of picking them, you can make even a bland minor/major pentatonic scale sound really interesting if you use string skipping, 1 note per-string economy picking, hybrid picking or use wide intervals along each string. Check out Eric Johnson, he can make even a plain old major scale sound really interesting using these techniques

  • @leopower7 use a sharp 7 minor scale and try learn two octives. Its very... Yngwie

  • @LartenCreapsly That's the harmonic minor he mentions.

  • If ur a metal player also throw in raga(indian), chinese(pentatonic) and arabic scales. The thing with scales is that you initial learn them as a pattern, build muscle memory but to actually use them you have to listen to the sound they make and then throw that into your solo.

  • danny gill is the fucking master, this guy is a beast

  • i can't wait for my music theory class this year = )

  • let's say the amount of scales in western music is huge there's also the neopolitan scale, bebop(and it's various modes) danny is one of the top LL teachers

  • hes that awesome!!!

  • What scale is that at :38 that Yngwie uses?

  • @POWEROFSOUL44 Harmonic Minor

  • @POWEROFSOUL44 Am harmonic :

    A B C D E F G#

  • he knows many many scales! greetings from ireland/france/finland

  • Gill > the rest
